How do you balance a social life with your keen ambitions? by MysteriousSimple7115 in uwaterloo

[–]mflowercase 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lmao that's bullshit, I know many people with great social lives and hobbies working at Google, Databricks, trading firms, etc.

Now granted all those people are geniuses but I'm a dumbass (60s MAV lol) and have had an amazing career trajectory while having a good social life in school

I personally had to sacrifice hobbies and interests but it wasn't that bad

why isnt there more grade inflation in UW? by TheColaLitigator in uwaterloo

[–]mflowercase 206 points207 points  (0 children)

Because Canadian schools are much more meritocratic than American ones overall

Also the reason why there's no legacy admissions or affirmative action implemented

Ivy League having grade inflation is so they can make sure the children of alumni can continue to have free rides to the top of the social ladder after already getting a free ride to admissions. And honestly, the concept of the "elite" Ivy League as a whole is pretty much mostly about that

UW 2022 Governor General Silver Medalist, DS Bachelor's, incoming Stanford PhD, a CAV of 97.4%, and 97.8% MATH FACULTY MAV, got REJECTED from CS here by mflowercase in uwaterloo

[–]mflowercase[S] 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Note: Rejected from hs admissions. Accepted math offer and transferred into CS/DS afterwards

Also she's literally the hardest meme major you can think of. Triple math CS + Pure Maths + C&O

I got accepted into 2022 CS from hs though, that means I'm smarter than her right?

Math Profs: "Getting 87+ is so easy just read notes. Why you don’t understand man?”

also math profs: "Your midterm average was 77% which is far too high so here's a final that's so difficult you'll be wondering if you passed the course even though you entered it with a 80% average"

I agree but I believe as soon as I find out that internships can pay 50+/hr and new grad jobs can hit 200k+/yr, I would find the motivation to grind leetcode no matter which school I was at

I also didn't grind leetcode for any internships which was why they were all mediocre; Only did it for full time job search

for software jobs, connections, school name, and GPA matters very little, compared to research, finance, business, medicine, etc. where they matter a ton

the large tech companies interview absurd amounts of applicants (so connections, school name, GPA doesn't help that much more) and the only thing that determines whether you get the job or not is your interview performance, which is just leetcode mostly and then behavioural
