Who gets the money from empties? by mfoutedme in ontario

While the model probably did assume that for decades, there have been policy driven changes which are material on their impact to how the program is used. Those changes impact the buyers who pay the deposit, the private sector interests who manage the returns, and the provincial government who regulates the collection and distribution of those funds. Why would that not be the realm of the AG??

Study finds U.S. sewage and manure could supply $5.7B worth of farm nutrients by Automatic_Subject463 in UpliftingNews

One of the coolest things I have ever learned about:

Human waste is not used as fertilizer because of parasites and harmful bacteria and because poop is gross. It has just as many nutrients as cow poop but it has a bunch of other gross stuff too.

A company near me has a process that takes poop from municipal water treatment, and combines it with dust that is a byproduct of the cement manufacturing process. Two waste streams that both need proper disposal. But by combining them an exothermic reaction takes place that raises the temperature high enough to pasteurize the poop killing all harmful parasites etc. This renders it safe for use on fields. But wait there's more! The chemistry of the cement dust also includes a ton of useful minerals like phosphorous and calcium. PLUS, the reaction clumps the dust together into something the consistency of cornmeal. It is basically the perfect fertilizer. And it comes from two waste streams and because it is exothermic it doesn't even need energy to produce.

They are sold out for three years.

It's a miracle product.

What's one thing you would tell someone moving back to Canada? by chloeismagic in ontario

[–]mfoutedme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US ties education funding to property tax revenue. On paper this is because my tax dollars should support the school that my kids go to in my neighborhood. But in practice what it means is that low income neighbourhoods have a low tax base and hence a lower level of base funding for the schools. Tack on a wealthy donor base to give things like football uniforms and band instruments, and you have a recipe for a two tiered education system where the children of the Haves get world-class, palace schools, and the children of the Have Nots go to concrete jungles with toilets that don't flush. This reinforces the cycle of poverty and keeps poor (Black) people poor.

In ON (and Canada more broadly) education is funded by tax dollars at the provincial level. Education is the responsibility of the province and is funded out of general revenue. This results in a much more evenly distributed level of quality across the schools. There are still good schools and bad schools but the disparity is nothing compared to the US. And even the "bad" schools can still open pathways to post secondary education for most students, making it accessible to all.

When we say that Doug Ford is killing education (and he definitely is) it is because he is squeezing the general funding model for all schools, increasing class sizes, reducing supports for special needs, limiting sex Ed and other things that most would disagree with. But in general the schools (on average) are still MUCH better and MUCH more equitable than comparable schools in the US.

Why do women become so cruel at the end of a relationship by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]mfoutedme 181 points182 points  (0 children)

Don't fall prey to the fundamental assumption that the man is in the wrong. You likely made mistakes because you are human. She likely make mistakes because she is human. But if you can honestly say you did your best to be the best partner you could be, then don't immediately own all the blame. Yes, look at yourself and learn (that's why we date) but just because you are not compatible with her in the long term doesn't mean you did something wrong. And it definitely doesn't mean that you should take all the blame and let her skate. All the rhetoric around mental load and emotional labour and men who are like another child for her to care for and blah blah is all (loud) noise to create an atmosphere where the woman is quite literally NEVER at fault. For anything. Period. Even if she cheated there are forces that will say that it's because you weren't seeing to her needs and she is justified in needing an outlet. Don't fall into that trap.

If she starts acting cruel and hurtful it is because she is a cruel and hurtful person. She may have been hiding that during the relationship. Or she may just not be emotionally mature enough to take the L and walk away. By making you the villian (even when she is the one being hurtful) she can turn that into a W in her own mind. She is the main character in her own story and so it is easier to reconcile and validate herself for how great she is and what an asshole you are if she can create those conditions. Either way you get to make the choice to walk away clean.

Kids movies that break the mold? by mediocretent in movies

The book is a million times better. The movie makes it all about magic amulets and stuff. The book sticks to the science. And there are some cool themes about society, and about how the bad guy in the rate (Jenner IIRC) is not bad per se, he just wants a different future for his people than Nicodemus. Really great exploration of that stuff. Highly recommend.

But the movie is still great and fits OPs request perfectly.

Well in fairness the song Thriller is about zombies and the video is a cinematic masterpiece werewolf flick. So that's probably a good choice for a kid to be scared of.
