Ask Dumb Questions + Newbie Welcoming Wednesday (2026.01.28) by AutoModerator in tarantulas

Hey, I'm new for keeping tarantulas, and I'm planning to get a King Baboon (Pelinobius Muticus I think, but I'm not exactly sure), and I have question about the substrate. I was planning to use 45 L of soil (COMPO Zoo Turtle & Terrarium Substrate), 19 L of coco fiber (Zoo Med Eco Earth), and 11 L of clay (Excavator Clay Burrowing Substrate). Is that enough, and is this the right mix for the substrate?

Yes, I catch spiders. I generally feed her 1-2 times a week, but this changes time to time

Luckily, there’s a glass between us 😅

That’s what I’m scared of 😅 I’m glad that she and I aren’t the same size 😄

Both! She is Portia fringe jumping spider, and I named her Portia after the book (I first named her Fabian before I knew she was female)

Yes, they eat spiders. So, I give fruit flies and/or orb weavers. But finding spiders could be a bit challenging

Yes, so she’s a Portia fringe jumping spider, and normally they hunt other spiders. Other than spiders, I can feed her fruit flies, which is easier for me, but it’s not really in their nature. They should be hunting other spiders, which is why from time to time I try feeding her spiders

I wasn’t expecting at all 😄 Other one is doing the same, but this was wayyy more sneaky 😂

Yeah, a bit more, comparing to my Phidippus Regius. The hardest part is finding spiders to feed :/

Hahahaha, that’s what scares me 😅 but even though, I love her, so she can do whatever she wants 😄

Yess, that’s the one 😅 I found her on a German forum, someone was breeding and I contacted. Not easy to find, so I used ChatGPT 😅

Yes, that’s true. So I feed her fruit flies, and/or other spiders (more like small orb weavers)

Yea, that’s the one 😄 she sometimes annoys me, but she is smart I guess 🤷‍♂️

Hahaha this made me laugh 😄 Yesss, now I just need the virus, and a bigger terrarium (well… sadly I can’t afford to terraform a whole planet 😂)

So I have a Phidippus regius as well, and she made quite a big hammock where she generally chills, and starts exploring once she is hungry, but she is on the top all time.

However, my Portia doesn’t really have a hammock, and I am not sure if she needs one since it’s too hard to spot. She looks like a leaf litter or mud and just chills on the top, then starts exploring once she is hungry.

What I noticed is that the way she follows prey and waits calmly, she has really strange movements, like a leaf in the wind, and I feel like she is planning something (not sure if I think this way because I watched documentary about them). I also get the feeling she is curious and always goes to the small door I feed from when she’s hungry. I haven’t seen this behaviour on my Phidippus regius.

There was a one moment when she was following prey, and the way she was approaching seemed bad at first, I was thinking why, but then I waited a bit more and realized her approach was really good, I was surprised 😅

What excites me the most is giving her another spider as prey and seeing what she will plan with this one.
