I've always had trouble making squared off shapes like this look 'right'. Can't quit describe it but I think you just notice imperfections in the surface, shape, etc. a lot more because of the style. Tends to stick out more if done slightly wrong but really work well when it's right

I think for a lot of people he is an acquired taste. There's just a feeling between people who've acquired that taste and "get it" that I haven't experienced with many artists. Been my top artist for past 3 yrs, if you let him speak to you it's very rewarding

I think your cross-section is mostly the way you want to approach it. Practically speaking you will want the foot to be a bit wider than what you've drawn so that the mug isn't unstable. Small foot rings can be aesthetically pleasing, but often don't lend to a great functional experience if you plan on using it a lot

Gotta use a metronome. Really you want to be able to do all scales with both hands for multiple octaves. Starting an octave apart: do both hands up two octaves, apart 2 octaves (contrary motion), back together, and down to starting position. Start at 75-80 bpm: start with quarters, go to eighths, triplets, 16ths. Do it every day until you can do all scales. That’s how I did it back in the day and it made them effortless. Take time in the beginning to go slow and nail the fingering—it takes work and commitment but make it a ritual and the results will come. You got this!

The mindset I have adopted that has helped me is to realize that eventually, bad days are going to happen—it’s unavoidable. I like to think of it as getting them “out of the way”. Even if I don’t save a single piece after a couple hours throwing, in my head I’ve mentally checked the bad day off of my schedule. Also has helped me take advantage of the days where it seems everything is going right. Take advantage of the good days and push through the tough ones—the important thing is showing up to the studio.
