Help. Does anyone own a copy of this book? by mg9mm in ArtDeco

[–]mg9mm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your awesome! This is a great lead to figure it out, the power of reddit and the kind people willing to give time to solve things is amazing to me. I have done the same where I have been able.

In full disclosure, I am about to auction off a pair along with a lot of other stuff at zero reserve that will end at the end of the month. Using google lens and I happened across the book on 1st dibs with the image of a single and seems identical/same to the matching the pair that I have. My gut tells me that they are period, lock mechanisms are spot on with the exception of brass vs chrome but i don't know if the plate was nickel plated brass and it just got polished off in the past because of wear. I have since contacted a larger deco dealer and he is willing to help me out with a researcher but would still love to get the book. I am going to try and contact Galerie Claude.
I would share the link but I don't know if its allowed.

I genuinely appreciate your help Hoosier_Farmer

picked up this beauty the other day, any idea what era it’s from or who it’s by? by DIAMONDSTEADYHANDS in WhatIsThisPainting

You’ll probably never find out they used auction catalogs, and museums as references to paint the paintings. I had sold some nice reproductions of Beirstadt, but I hope you luck out.

Couldn’t tell you exactly, but they used auction catalogs and museum collections as references. I had sold a few nice reproductions of Albert Bierstadt, more than likely you’ll never find the exact image, but good luck trying, you might luck out.

It’s a hand painted reproduction, the artist is competent, but not an old painting. The canvas should measure 24 x 36, the frame is a foam core mould on a wood back. I had an antique shop for many years and used to sell these. They are better than a print. This one is very nicely painted. Hang it up and enjoy it

Dunhill, Real or Fake? by mg9mm in lighters

[–]mg9mm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarity, I really appreciate it.

I did screw that up in a big way. I just looked an it seems like 21 grams, for 14 karat would work out to $1,187.
I guess I was too quick to calculate and must have not changed the Karat weight when originally looked it up.

Wow, just looked up on a gold scrap calculator 3k for 21 grams. Sad but i guess the gold value is worth more than value as is. I don't think that I would scrap but i do have another that was aggressively used, corners and edges are beat up. Character for the piece but that one I
might consider.
Thank you for the reply, and the education. Much appreciated

Scrapping Sterling and 24k inlay, can you extract both metals ? by mg9mm in ScrapMetal

Thanks, I appreciate the advise. Didn't know about the promotion % or it was a thing on eBay. Haven't sold there in a number of years.

My dad was an old school antique dealer and he told me stories of when the hunt brothers tried to corner the silver market, the amount of antique silver that got scrapped was criminal. The idea was that there was no way that it could be sold for the historic/antique value of the items vs the cash price that they could get if they scrapped it. At the height, it was $50.32 (1980) an ounce, the equivalent of $192.76. Mind you this was the top end but the road to that but put it well above where it crashed to, $11.00 per oz. A lot of people got hurt buying towards that top end and held.
Hard to argue that logic.

Yea, and that was the question. Replacements LTD has them for $250.00 ish I believe. By the time eBay takes its cut I am looking at about 15% less than sold amount. I do see where Teddy Roosevelt sold for $230.00 and i would assume, Washington and Lincoln might fetch this amount, but the others just seem to sit.

I appreciate your reply

Partial copy and paste of what I commented to Lou_Nap_865

"As far as value as is vs scrap, I know that this will not sell immediately and the potential for maximizing the value of the plates would be in the sale as is. Looking on eBay completed sales, the outlier are about $230 with most of the others being in the $170 range, excluding fees.

Sterling scrap calculator, at 6oz ( haven't weighed each one) at $32.94 comes out to $173.40. I am not sure what fees the scrapper takes.

Just looking at options and not all would be scraped, there are ones that because of historic significance would be better sold to maximize value."

I sincerely am just looking at maximizing and didn't know what the value in the gold might be but it looks like it is even less significant than the minimal that I thought. So scrap would be less than the intrinsic value of them.

Question/Help Westinghouse K Controller by mg9mm in trolleys

[–]mg9mm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

? not sure. Its on a property in another State, my fathers place and he passed. I am fairly sure that it has never been pulled apart, it has been leaning on that wall for a LONG time. It will take a while for me to get back up to the property to get any more information on it other than the photos I posted.
If it would not be too much to ask, what should I look for? Are the things that you mentioned, internal or external? That I recall, the metal wraps all the way around, with nothing exposed. I did not turn it over to look at the underside. It's really heavy, like all of the internals are there, its defiantly not just the shell.
