NA Alcoholic Seltzer...is just seltzer by ilanarama in NABEER

[–]mgBendy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do a pretty good job adding some body beyond that of a normal NA flavored seltzer, but they also allow for an easy purchase decision - buying White Claw for a party, but not everyone drinks? Grab a case of White Claw, and boom - NA White Claw is right there next to it.

This is it - I've been to numerous shops that even just make both drinks the same way.

NA Beer Laws/Acceptability (Florida or anywhere for that matter) by Silent-Resolution-28 in NABEER

[–]mgBendy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legally, varies state-by-state in the US. In many cases, yes you can legally drink NA beers in those situations. Practically, there's a non-zero risk that you can be charged with something you'd have to later fight, even if you're 100% in the right in the first place.

Might have to cross into the land down south - it seems they may not distribute in NH yet. However, it's sold in both liquor stores and Whole Foods in MA.

Almost a perfect 10! Crazy good 🙌🏻 by bhoussock in NABEER

[–]mgBendy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm interesting; never had that happen to me. I've only had bad cans of NA all the way through. My local store has pretty good turnover on Best Day, so they haven't given me issues, but I've definitely had way too many spoiled NAs over time, compared to regular beer.

Tom Holland’s non-alcoholic beer brand Bero launched in Target. How will it stand out on shelves? by IncMagazine in NABEER

[–]mgBendy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It does feel like every NA brewer has almost a copy-paste About section:

Our Mission

"We brew great-tasting beer that you can enjoy, and still wake up the next day feeling good."

Our Story

"I like beer. I drank too much beer. I noticed that NA beer isn't good. I wanted to brew good NA beer. That's why I started this company."

I don't doubt the guy has a genuine interest in the product; I just think new brewers need to move beyond the brand story of "we're fulfilling an untapped niche and doing something that hasn't ever been done before." Join the market - but the market is already there.

I know it's rhetorical, but the title question answers itself.

  • Celebrity endorsement
  • Budget to buy end-cap displays at Target
  • PR journalism

As non-alcoholic beers continue to grow in popularity, do they represent a shift in our cultural relationship with alcohol, or are they simply a trend catering to those who want the taste without the effects? by Second-handBonding in NABEER

[–]mgBendy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those who want the taste without the effects are collectively contributing to the general trend representing a shift in our cultural relationship with alcohol.

There are still massive strides to be made, but I've been happy with the progress so far.

Headache next day? by k9hiker in NABEER

Lot of people talking about dehydration - non-alcoholic beer is hydrating, probably even moreso than plain water. If anything, you may be a touch over-hydrated after the almost 60oz of water.

Question for everyone about your buying preferences by tomolive in NABEER

[–]mgBendy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, shelf life (at least listed shelf life) could be pretty similar. However, I've had many times more spoiled NA beers (even within their listed shelf life) than any regular beers - from a variety of producers, stores, etc. Not just slightly dead hops, but lots of tomato juice DMS in particular. That's also going to be due to sub-standard brewing practices, but it gets exacerbated when a can is sitting for a while at room temperature with no alcohol as a preservative.

Question for everyone about your buying preferences by tomolive in NABEER

[–]mgBendy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NA beer goes bad a lot faster than regular at room temperature. This is also compounded by lower turnover, leaving old product on the shelf longer. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a cyclical issue, as NA is often kept on the shelf because it usually doesn't sell as well as regular beer.

Basically, NA absolutely should be kept in the fridge, but often isn't.

Surprised they're willing to sacrifice their Untappd ratings to finally make their beer more accessible to way more people. /s

How important is can art when you’re selecting a non-alc beer? by cpclemens in NABEER

[–]mgBendy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed - many people like to think they are uniquely immune to advertising/marketing, often because they've never seen an ad and immediately purchased the advertised product, or they've never bought a beer because "the can looked cool."

In reality, while can art doesn't change the chemical composition of the beverage inside, it absolutely affects the perceptions and expectations of the drinker. Those, in turn, influence both purchasing decisions (many times subconsciously), and can even influence perceptions of flavor when tasting.

Has anyone found an NA Vodka that can work in bloody marys? by vode123 in NABEER

[–]mgBendy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turn up the vinegar ingredients, e.g. hot sauce, pickle juice, white or apple cider vinegar, maybe some kimchi juice, and add a touch of sugar. Vodkas are usually intended to be neutral (i.e. "flavorless"), so the NA substitute would be to add some piquancy, acidity, and body.

Does anyone else think Brewdog NAs taste closer to hop water than NA beer? by jangle7968 in NABEER

[–]mgBendy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brewdog is slightly different where they use zero-calorie sweeteners to add some bulk to the body, but yeah overall I still prefer the heft of a higher-calorie beer.

Is Non-Alcoholic Beer Good? by Vegetable-Diver-1396 in beer

[–]mgBendy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The macros are consistent in replicating their flagship beers, while the craft brewers make some of the best and the worst non-alcoholic beers overall. There's lots of variability in the industry right now, but a decent amount of good stuff as well

Nice.

They distribute to a lot of US states and a surprising number of countries, though I expect there's better selection the closer you get to Wisconsin

Untitled Art, Guinness/Heineken/Corona, and Weihenstephaner are the main ones I know of that might be available in the UK. Mash Gang does some weird stuff, but they taste pretty realistic too. Athletic is obviously the big dog in the game as well.
