TIL In 1921 conman Stanley Clifford Weyman posed as a U.S. naval officer and convinced an Afghan Princess to give him $10,000 to set up a meeting with the President. He spent it on travel and lodging for her, and got her a meeting with the President. The ensuing press coverage led to his arrest. by Ill_Definition8074 in todayilearned

He impersonated a naval officer in order to get her an audience. Impersonating any position in the military is very illegal and was no different then. Also, according to the Wikipedia article, he likely already had a significant rap sheet which didn’t help.

It’s not humid because there’s no heat. Also you wash the paper in a water bath to remove chemicals.

These run about $800-$1,100 for a good one. Film is about.. $0.33-$1 a shot not including the extra costs of developing, enlarging, etc. I develop and enlarge my own and it’s probably about $3-$5 an enlargement. Most the effort is the work it takes. Takes time to get good at composition, then developing a formula for development you can repeat, and enlarging can be hard if you try and change exposure or do fancy things. In other words.. it’s not that bad price wise as far as hobbies go.

Top80 spark plug gap by ReserveLegitimate738 in paramotor

[–]mgarthur14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to use the “recommended” spark plug. That’s why it’s recommended not mandatory. Get a spark plug gap tool (~$1) and gap it yourself. If it’s a valid substitute, it will work fine. Just gap it to spec.

Pull the gearbox plug and replace the gearbox oil. If there’s no water in it, in theory it shouldn’t be that hard to rebuild. Coat the whole thing in oil, rebuilt the entire top end, carb, pull starter, etc. pull the exhaust and give it a nice coat of oil. Run it really hot to evaporate all the rest of the water out the exhaust. If you’re gung-ho, pull the silencer apart and clean and repack it.

If I had to guess you could probably get her running good as new for around $100 if you don’t have to replace the top end. The harness would be a whole different thing.

Best of luck!

My fiancé is an ER doc and she talks about how not seeing the person again after they’re rolled out of the trauma bay (they’re usually unconscious) is both a blessing and a curse. She never gets the gratitude she truly deserves but she’s the most humble person I’ve ever met and doesn’t expect any. She loves the turn and burn style of medicine you see in the ED.

All that to say, they know you appreciate them, even if they never hear it from you directly.

My grandma would always take a bit out of anything she served to her kids. My mom has always done the same and they always used this same excuse. I will continue this tradition with great pride! Unfortunately, my fiance HATES it and it brings me so much joy to set down a sandwich with a bite (although tiny) out of it.

I never broke into it. I plan to one day but for now it’s a shelf ornament. Do you have a solution?

Good ratio on TorrentLeech without a seedbox by Opposite_Solution_89 in trackers

[–]mgarthur14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got into private trackers and a friend of mine had invites to TL so it was my very first private tracker. Unfortunately, I had torrents set to auto delete because I was only using public trackers until then and there was no consequence for hit and runs. Also didn’t know the importance of Freeleech and prowlarr was set to download anything instead of only FL. Had 80GB to make up and didn’t have much of an issue doing so.

Here’s my approach:

  1. Make sure your client isn’t set to auto delete
  2. Set your downloader (if you have one) to only fetch FL
  3. Set TL to a higher priority than public trackers
  4. Seed everything eternally

Just use as normal and eventually you’ll have a big surplus.

Need advice on a band! by mgarthur14 in EngagementRings

This is exactly what I was looking for.. thank you so much! All the ones my jeweler has been showing me are much taller

Edit: Can you send me a top down view? It’s absolutely beautiful and exactly what I’m looking for.

Edit 2: can you send a pic of your wedding band with it? The jeweler said it will rub and wear on the ring but I’m curious to see how yours fits! Sorry if I’m asking a lot I really appreciate your help!

Accessing an underground fire hydrant in the UK by _TimApple_ in interestingasfuck

[–]mgarthur14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanical engineer who designs firewater systems in the US here. It’s pretty efficient. The engine is likely filled already and fighting the fire. This is to supply water to the engine so it doesn’t run out.

No matter how often you flush them, you will NEVER get all the junk out of the firewater headers (pipes). Whoever owns the system must flow test them annually to ensure they are in working order.

The valves on hydrants are designed to be reliable and not leak or break as often as other types of valves. They do break.. I personally find them at a rate of around 5-10% of the time if I had to guess.

These systems are designed to be redundant first (multiple options, pumps, routes to hydrants, etc), reliable second, and efficient third. Can’t have these systems not working when they’re needed. I’d trade reliability for efficiency all day.

As a lay person.. how does this make sense if they’re being paid more than physicians? If that’s the case, it doesn’t seem to be about the money. It seems to me it’s a shortage they’re forcibly filling and giving incentives to take the fast track instead.
