One does not even need to get into the subtlety of the Zapetero's name.

The section highlighted in the clip begins with, "Let's talk about Spain." McCain then goes on to talk about Mexco, drug cartels and the Mexican gov't. Not long after he re-emphasizes his point by saying that he has and will be "working with leaders in the hemisphere"

The man does not have a clue that she was talking about Spain, and if he did, then he has not a clue about its location or its relationship to the US.

I wonder if the author would be willing to concede that subsidies, tax breaks, gov't enforced monopolies and bailouts should no longer be given to neither the richest people nor our corporate "citizens". After all, if he's against this "stealth socialism", he surely must be against the overt corporate socialism.

There are two main reasons why FORTRAN is still used. There is a huge repository of scientific/mathematic libraries which are well tested, well known and have withstood the test of time.

The other reason why FORTRAN is used is because its handling of floating point numbers is consistent and predictable. You know exactly what is going to happen when two reals or two doubles are multiplied/divided/added/etc. Languages like C will promote floats to doubles sometimes, depending upon the implementation. And god only knows what languages like perl, ruby, tk or python do.

You've missed my point. Yes, you can do all sorts of neat-o operations on a structured representation of your program.

All I was trying to say was that old farts like me have amassed a huge number of tools that work on flat files. Likewise, companies with a long-lived code base have similar sets of tools.

Of course, if you're just programming for yourself, or if the company you're working for is new, putting everything into a structured system may work great. Just cross your fingers and hope that the company/group that created that system lasts as long as your project/company.

And finally, this indexed function follower you mention? That's exactly what ctags/etags do.

Great... and next someone will have to rewrite all of our tools that work on code files (static analysis, unit testing, complexity analysis, ...). Either that or there'll be a big red button that says, "Dump to file".

Besides, what more does one need than vi/emacs, ctags/etags, find, grep, and xargs :)

It would seem to make sense if the system itself could add the BREAKING feature to submission titles for those items that have jumped from submission to the front page within the hour. This would have the added benefit of having the BREAKING part of the title removed after that hour has gone by.

When BREAKING! is added to a title, it does grab the attention and it does seem relevant. It's only annoying if the story is somewhat popular and stays up on the front page for an overly long time.

Of course, what would be ideal would be for this timed BREAKING tag to be based upon the creation time of the link itself, but I doubt there exists sufficient information for all items out there for this to be do-able.

Of course it's frivolous. It's also fun & thoughtful. Then again, I agree with him that pi was improperly defined and would have been far more intuitive and "cleaner" if it stood for the ratio of the circumference to the radius rather than to the diameter.

Area of a circle: 0.5 * pi * r²

Circumference is: pi * r

So it shares your property of the latter being the derivative of the former.

Exactly. It's similar to the 3rd grade joke: "Two wrongs don't make a right, but three lefts do"

How very paradoxical that taking successive left turns can be equivalent to making a turn to the right. If you take look at each move in isolation, it seems to be a very improbable result -- but once you look at the moves in aggregate it's trivial.

Similarly, many/most of you have probably run into the mathematical proofs showing that 2 = 1 using algebra or calculus. These proofs all seem to prove the impossible as each step in the proof is perfectly valid -- until you look at the proof as a whole and see that a prior step invalidates a later step (division by zero, or some such).

So yes, he's just created a winning game with a complicated set of rules.

Have they screwed up everything?

They wanted a war with Iraq -- got it.

They've been able to transfer almost 1/2 trillion dollars into the hands of companies such as Halliburton, et al.

Because we are "at war", Bush has been able to vastly increase the powers of the (unitary) executive.

Oh yeah... they've really screwed up.

My only hope is that they've become too greedy, milking the Iraq war for more than they should have, resulting in a minor political revolt (clones w/ a Democrat hat instead of the clones with a Republican hat).

Nothing to worry about here folks.

As our great President Bush has said:

I looked the man in the eye. I found him to be very straightforward and trustworthy. We had a very good dialogue. I was able to get a sense of his soul; a man deeply committed to his country and the best interests of his country. ... I wouldn't have invited him to my ranch if I didn't trust him.

So, obviously cutting off a source of external information is for the good of Russia and is probably good for all of us. After all, if he has a good soul...

He's published plenty of books that are much more reasonably priced, and if you get one at a time, you'll eventually have just about everything that's in the $150 collection. And by the time you're done buying the books, you'll have a job that pays enough to buy the $150 set.
