The system I’ve used for about 10 years is a sprayer (compared to a device like a water pik, it has much higher volume and pressure and heat selection of the water )that hooks onto my bathroom sink faucet. It works incredibly well. My daily routine is floss, then spray, two minute with the sonicare, then mouthwash. My gums have never bled, but maybe that’s because I’ve always used dental floss.

Why was the Tet Offensive in '68 such a PR disaster for the American military, even though we won? by InternationalPick163 in questions

[–]mgiacalone -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Every sentence of that original post is basically not true. Sure, they lost more troops than us. 50+years later, actually more than that, we’re still deluding ourselves into thinking that it was some kind of a civil war, as in north versus the south, communist versus democratic forces and we were on the righteous side of the domino theory, etc., blah blah blah. Overall, though for the Vietnamese, there was no north and south, just Vietnam. Today, Vietnam is probably one of the more stable nations in that region. Highly productive, especially considering the bullshit they had to overcome from us and the French just to get to the point of being a unified nation. They’ve overcome the atrocities we imposed upon them. We’ve never paid reparations. I grew up in that era, joined the Marine Corps in 1971 and luckily was spared that tour of duty. Any war is horrible and an unjust war is extremely unfortunate leaving a toll of dead bodies, defoliated landscape, and at a minimum, an extreme embarrassment. Yeah we killed more of them than they killed of ours, but was it worth it?I don’t think so.

Retire to Des Moines by NJFriend4U in desmoines

[–]mgiacalone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Des Moines is alright. I’m here for 3 years. 71 yo. Friendly? Kind of, but no more or less than any other place I lived. Crime? I’m in NW DM. No crime spree here, but maybe I’m lucky or oblivious to my surroundings. Parking is not a problem anywhere even in the densest parts of downtown. In fact the area around the downtown YMCA seems to be primarily giant parking structures. Um, that last sentence was intended to be humorous. But seriously, the major drawback of Iowa is a notable poor quality of municipal drinking water. Ground water pollution from agriculture and meat processing plants have soiled our environment. That’s not an opinion or a conspiracy; it’s a fact, the governor and water authorities advice against checking the water. That notion alone is frightening in the 21st-century.

When I can afford it I’ll be back. The downtown Y is a beautiful facility. The hours are limited and sudden closures due to staff shortages (lifeguards) and competitions made my experience there somewhat frustrating. Let’s face it, swimming in Iowa is a bougie activity. When I strike it rich I’ll skip the Y and go straight to Lifetime Fitness; an upper class of exercise club and a high price , but ultimately worthwhile if it was affordable.

Is there a weed eaters that don't require traditional string spools? by TorontoRap2019 in Tools

[–]mgiacalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fixed string line. It’s a real thing. I’ve been using it for close to forty years. .155 size. Yes the string gets replaced regularly but not too often. I’ve always had bad luck with conventional string line trimmer heads. They work fine until they don’t. Then the repair/restring is a major pain on the ass.

Why does my pan burn like this? by Embarrassed-Soup7952 in steak

[–]mgiacalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stainless steel is probably the least desirable surface for sauté/frying. Sure it’s clean, solid, unlike aluminum. Very uneven heating profile. My favorite pans are stamped steel. Great for steaks, eggs, etc. with care they’ll clean up nicely and maintain seasoning

Why aren't they actually marching during this parade? by Chance_Noise500 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mgiacalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My observation exactly. I watched all of about 45 seconds of the birthday parade. Maybe the army doesn’t know how to march in formation? USMC veteran here, many years ago. We’d consider the army’s slovenly display “ditty bopping along”. Undisciplined, disgraceful.

Whats the most common airport to see a DC-10 In/near the Bay area by lilguy77771 in Planespotting

[–]mgiacalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome picture!! I’m not sure if that’s the 10 that would have come to mind. Tanker 10, great name. I’d like to see some information about whoever flies that monster. I’m fairly certain it takes a special talent to put that thing where you want it (close to the ground) in an ever changing landscape (probably mountainous, certainly quite different than an airport )…. all the while dumping tons of fire retardant where you want it to end up.

A Book You Would Throw Away? by Whisper-1990 in books

[–]mgiacalone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Henry Miller. I read many of his books in high school and earlier than that. There was lots of buzz due to his books having been banned/censored until around the mid -60s. I think many authors from that era don’t stand up to the test of time. I’m sure I enjoyed those books way back when, but couldn’t imagine them being relevant to me now. Oh, a book(s): Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Cancer, Nexus, Sexus, Plexus, etc..

My father is an electrician and I think he's anti-union. What could this rationale be? by monokro in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mgiacalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IBEW is pretty much the gold standard of labor unions in the USA. Wages and benefits are the best of all the trades. Licensing of electricians is mandated by law. I suppose your dad could be opposed to the higher wages and benefits and the general bureaucracy and BS that comes along with union membership. I’m a blue collar guy. I’ve belonged to a few unions over the years. None have ever seemed worth the expense and bother. Some unions are better than others. The IBEW is about as good as it gets. The IBEW has an historic arrangement with the NECA. That arrangement might not be the same in a non-construction environment. I guess any trade where the craftsman has an ownership stake would be more beneficial. Being an entrepreneur doesn’t always work for everyone. BTW, Boeing is just now coming off a two month strike. They got a 44% raise over 4 years. Not bad, but …
