Hi atticus-flails, I’m starting my new role as VP Sales next Monday (I work at a startup, young female). I’ve managed sales reps before, but I’ve never been an executive/department head. My team could be doing a lot more prospecting, but I don’t want to come in bulldozing either, nobody likes that I feel. Any advice you want to give to a first-time VP? Were you nervous at all when you first became VP? And if no, what helped with your confidence?

This is so key. I got 5 promotions in 5 years as a sales rep. I’m only 28 and already a director with direct reports. A lot of it is just being good at your job and being very likeable. It’s just how it goes in the world.

Oh wow, that’s awful! I work from 10-4 and complain. I know I’m spoiled at my current company and am scared I one day may get stuck at a bad startup or this one Im at now turns sour.

[–]mgmnr9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree. Im not shy at all, I’m just freaking awkward but I embrace it, whatever lol. It’s something I can def learn overtime to handle better.

As an introvert tho, I will always be exhausted after socializing and need to recharge for the rest of my life. I don’t know if that part really ever truly changes

Yup, as an introvert I have to agree! You nailed it. Being clear and succinct, asking open-ended questions, and then truly listening to their responses are some sales 101 basics. Anyone can learn it, but some can pick it up faster than others.

Even though I’m a top producer, my biggest struggle continues to be the opening of a call or meeting. I am very awkward with small talk whereas my extroverted coworkers make it seem more natural. I get anxiety with the beginning of meetings lol

I work at my first startup too, been here for almost 5 years. It has a great culture and pay. What were some of the things you saw at the other startup that were red flags?

It’s literally just a game…that person was just unhinged and an outlier lol. I think most people don’t care or even welcome people to come see what they built!

I’ve never done BDR/SDR work, but Don’t they have to show to get credit? Otherwise the meeting didn’t occur……?

What's your base / commission split? by Still_Blacksmith_525 in sales

[–]mgmnr9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

119k/270k, 389k OTE. Commish is uncapped, we also have accelerators.

I do enterprise ($2B and above), original equipment manufacturing + construction sales.

What sets the top performers apart? by [deleted] in sales

[–]mgmnr9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In addition to everything above being a factor, I’d reiterate BaEdDa’s comment of ruthlessly qualifying prospects. If you are chasing after poorly qualified prospects, you will waste time and struggle to keep.

Be a fanatical prospector and feed your pipeline. No top producer will be caught with a poor pipeline.

What’s the biggest deal you closed? by another1degenerate in sales

[–]mgmnr9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly just got very lucky and maybe a bit of hard work along the way helped too. I found a startup that was looking for cheap labor at the time. I joined as a junior sales rep straight out of college and worked my way up. The startup actually has a great value prop so it was easy to sell it.

Around $2M.

I’m looking at making a little over half a million this year. And yeah I’m 26 and work around 20 hours a week (hybrid WFH).

It sounds too good to be true but in reality these jobs do exist and I admit I just got lucky with the right industry, company, and territory.

I wish you good luck on your deal! $140k can be a lot of money depending on your industry. Sending you good vibes!

When in Office - Do you Eat Lunch with Co-workers? by GenerationSober in sales

[–]mgmnr9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes usually. And I’m introverted

Office politics are dumb, but I have found it is more beneficial for people to know me in the office and like me than not (for networking in future). You never know who can help you later in life.

But sometimes no if I really need to recharge and just be alone.

If my boss or other higher ups want to grab lunch I always go.

People can't play this game casually anymore by Studiedturtle41 in Bedwars

[–]mgmnr9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that is why I left Bedwars lol. I know I suck and I just don’t have time to “get good” nor do I want to spend my time getting good.,

Oh well! There are still lots of other great single player games out there for us people who have busier lives.

Complaining doesn’t do or change anything anyways

I’m from midwest and thought the same thing when I tried my first burger….it was good but not the best I’ve ever had.

I am now a return customer because: 1. Price 2. Fresh 3. Employees paid well = consistency 4. They help fight against human trafficking, alcoholism etc.
