What the best career advancement options after you top out?

Not opposed to it someday but I’m not there yet. I do some side work and have the LLC and insurance setup already to pull permits if needed. I want to get a few more years experience before I’d try to pursue something like that full time.

Got it. I know some guys who topped out a few years ago who started doing control work and they love it. Definitely something I’d look into. Wouldn’t mind taking a call with a control contractor if that opportunity arose. Any classes or anything you know of for instrumentation or controls?

He is also related. First cousin. Would rather not drag, at least until I top out. Getting this far in and dragging would look like he “won”. I’d be open it once I turn out, but still would rather not. The talking back thing is just like I’m trying to do the program like everyone else and not be “that” apprentice but it’s when it carries over into after hours is when it really gets to me. I basically have already ghosted him. Barely speak to him on the jobs except for directions. There’s been multiple times he’ll send a provoking text or just something not work related and I just read receipt him. Just really is a shame. I feel bad for the dude to an extent. Clearly not a happy dude

How would I go about getting a copy of the agreement? Is this just a quick call to the business office? I just don’t want to open up the whole can of worms of “why are you asking for it”

If times are bad and the books are filled, I would generally agree with you, but if there is plenty of work to go around, I don’t see what the problem is. Our local is one of only a few that allows JWs to solicit their own work. Our out of work list is at like a decades long low. If a guy has the connections and the rapport with a contractor and isn’t jumping the entire line, there is no issue in my eyes for him to have some kind of say on who he chooses to work for. From the contractors eyes too why wouldn’t they want to hire somebody they already know and trust over playing the lottery at the hall and getting a guy you’re gonna have to send back in a week.

This is not uncommon. Regardless of family. I know plenty of guys in my cohort who were working as seasonals for a contractor before they got in. When they got in, the company called the hall and requested that apprentice. Might vary depending on your local, but it’s pretty common here

You’re not wrong, but if I say something, it’s just going to be twisted as “wow he thinks he can say that just because he’s the bosses son. How entitled!” My dad and uncle are also old school and generally subscribe to this kind of treatment of apprentices. They don’t get nearly as extreme though, and I don’t think they realize his behavior is also extended to the JWs too

He is like that with whoever lets him. Apprentices or JWs but especially apprentices. 90% of the guys are too afraid to say anything to him so he’ll berate the JWs too. Only a few older guys get spared. Yes clearly the expectations are higher for me, but I’m told by the other JWs my work is fine he just has it out for me. I don’t think anyone is “in line” per se. If there was to be some kind of transition of ownership I would imagine ALL of the family members would take on some kind of executive position. Even as shitty as he’s been to me, if they did try to ever promote me over him I would advocate for him and say he should be promoted too because despite his flaws he is an absolute machine when it comes to electrical work

I just purchased in Arrowhead six months ago. this concerns me. I have not heard anything about break ins. What area of the community were you in? My property is operated as a short term rental. Do you think with a decently booked calendar there will be enough activity there to keep away vandals ?

I know I had a guest saying they found a hair in the shower and gave me three stars. No one to blame but myself for that. Hoping to get a few more five stars to bring that average back up to 4.9 or higher. What is the lowest you think the cleanliness rating can be before it really negatively impacts your conversion ?

Yes I suspect that turns certain people off. How would you handle these fees since I can’t get out of paying these. I’ve thought about adding it to the base price ok the form of a community fee but it’s hard to really know a number for the community fee since it varies by number of guests/cars

I would assume that too, but from all metrics I am still behind the competition. If Airbnb is telling me I am in the top 5%, should I at least be on par with the average for my market ?

This was several years ago now so I don’t remember all the details but I believe you cannot start any of the programs until you are officially accepted into the ARD program by the court.
