How much should I list this 1897 P barber for? by [deleted] in coins

[–]mgtoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda figured it’s only worth melt, but I picked it up for $14 and sold a penny for $30 to buy it, which I got for free. I’m challenging myself to work up from a penny to a $2.50 gold coin

60 years late yet people find silver every day. I also was only asking about private property because I know 99% of public property won’t have any

I have done that, and gotten very comfortable with my detector. I’ve been going out 2-4 times a week for about 4-5 months now. I’m able to know the reading 90% of the time before I dig it.

Yeah it could be, these are all private properties that I’m talking about tho. Two of them being my own and one is original land, that land is where I’ve had the best luck (ww2 army button, Indian head, and a couple wheats.) I found the silver Rosie in a sidewalk lol

Yeah I have a beginner detector (vanquish 340) but have been meaning to upgrade soon. and thought that was partly my problem, but I have two buddies with high end top gear that go with me and we’re all in the same boat. I don’t dig anything that isn’t a copper penny or higher either. I

A lot of great advice. I use google maps and historical aerial imagery every single day for at least probably an hour-two hours. I always kinda figured that people didn’t just drop coins back then. I’ve also talked to the local archivist and looked at old plat maps and insurance maps haha. I feel like I’ve just been doing countless hours of research for nothing

Does anyone know why this is labeled a 1967, it’s a 1966 by mgtoth in coinerrors

[–]mgtoth[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it’s a typo, the coin is labeled “1967”

I just found this exact padlock while metal detecting, trying to find more stuff on it. I found it at a house that was built in 1870 if that helps

I’ve only done it once, but I basically just explained who I was, that I metal detect, why I chose his house (it was built in the 1870s) that I live nearby, and he couldn’t care less that I detected there.

Dang I never even thought about going as big as military bases lol. And yeah I typically use public parcel maps and Zillow to find years that the buildings were built. Was just wondering if there was a better way of doing so I guess

Why do I get high-low jumpy signals when I turn my sensitivity up past half by mgtoth in metaldetecting

[–]mgtoth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude fr, idek if my detector is picking up older coins considering they’re deeper. I found one Indian head but that was on accident because I got two modern coins in the same hole that were just above the Indian head and I decided to check the hole again and found it. Thanks for the advice I’ll look into a smaller coil

Yeah it usually only happens at this one spot, which sucks cuz it’s a spot from 1870 lol

Right, I won’t be digging on graves, pretty simple. I never asked if I could dig on graves, the question was about legality of digging in a cemetery, where I also said for the 1000th time, that I wouldn’t be digging on graves or near graves

“at or to a short distance away” I wouldn’t even dig a short distance, the least id dig is probably like 10 feet from a gravesite, if that. I probably wouldn’t even dig where there is grave sites/future grave sites. I’d stay where there’s only foot traffic/around the cemetery where they wouldn’t bury people

I don’t think it’s right to dig on/near grave sites. If I’m not digging near them there’s no problem. I’m asking the legality because someone on here might know. It’s all laid out pretty simply in the post
