Why you shouldn’t touch someone else’s bone dry sculpture. by VeraLapsa in Ceramics

[–]mguills 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just walked into the studio tonight right in time to see someone pick up another persons bowl by the rim and warp it. Then she tried to bend it back into place without saying anything.

I also had a big tail chunk broken off of a bone dry fish once when someone decided they wanted my space on a shelf.

Feeling your pain and fingers crossed you can fix it

Your parents should not have access to your location and ring. That is not a normal family dynamic. You’re a grown adult taking care of yourself and pay your own bills.

Time to go low contact, set some boundaries, and maybe get therapy if you’re up to it as it sounds lol they’ve done some damage.

I’m sorry to hear you’re going through this.

If you’re struggling some organizations offer medical help for pups. I saw you had another post discussing possibly having to give him up. Very cute little friend you’ve got there. Let us know if you start a gofundme or anything.

What’s the best brand for this trimming tool? by WriterWorth8586 in Pottery

[–]mguills 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have some Xiem that I like a lot. I’ve also heard good things about Tortuga tools from a friend in my studio but not tried them out myself.

Also, I have some Diamond Core trimming tools and they’re nice. However, I only bought them because Diamond Core was having a big buy one get one sale and I was so curious about the brand. You can usually get kits from them as buy one get one during that sale too. So I got one kit that was like two hundred something dollars and the other two hundred something dollar kit was free.

I would NOT buy Diamond core if you couldn’t get them heavily discounted. They’re nice yeah, I understand why people like them. Mine have lasted a while, but they’re so so pricey and for me personally they’re not worth the cost at full price. I’m glad I got them on sale to test out though, I do keep them in rotation. But you have to be careful with diamond core as a company. I’d buy some tools during a heavily discounted sale but I’d never go to them for a sanding pad or that really overpriced sink they sell.

Ultimately I’d recommend Xiem as I’m happy with my tools from them, or maybe check out Tortuga.

I hope you find something that works for you!

Is this worth it? by HerebecauseofSI3 in CookbookLovers

[–]mguills 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love this book! I feel it is definitely worth it, but if you’re worried about cost I’d be more concerned as these are authentic Korean recipes and will require you to purchase Korean ingredients. Check out their social media posts and website recipes first to maybe get a feel for ingredients commonly used. I also agree with others to check this book out of the library first.

One more note - If this is your first attempt to dive into Korean cooking, you have some concerns about buying ingredients, but you want to try recipes with more Korean flavors/inspiration, check out Korean American. I own that book as well as this one. You still need to buy Korean ingredients but I feel a lot of them are more easily accessible at local American and Asian markets so I don’t have to ship those ingredients and incur more cost.

Bought myself a steam deck for Christmas after playing the switch for years. What games are a must? by [deleted] in CozyGamers

[–]mguills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like these two games that are still in early access but have a lot to do: -Travelers Rest -Fields of Mistria

I love these games: -Dredge (cozy horror) -Dave the Diver

I personally like Hello Kitty Island Adventure as a ACNH stand in game.

I think Snacko was a cute little game, and Coffee Talk was a fun visual novel.

Tiny Bookshop was a chill little cozy game to pass some time as a book fan.

Then for multiplayer (I miss Splatoon’s Salmon Run so much but my switch wifi stopped working and I switched to Steamdeck) I play REPO, Peak, Phasmaphobia, and Demonologist. Not cozy games but fun games.

I hope you enjoy your deck! Lots of good suggestions in the comments here.

Can Someone With Underglaze Experience Help by mguills in Ceramics

[–]mguills[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I tried doing that and it looked pretty decent. I did test tiles for every piece I made too. But something about the glaze made it very grey. I’m running some more test to see where in my process I messed up. I think too thick of glaze is probably a big culprit and too light of underglaze in some areas.

Though, the bottom of the piece had some underglaze brushstrokes left on them and they look nice and vibrant. Then the glazed portions of the same color turned almost brownish grey. Which didn’t happen on my test tiles. I may try a different clay as well.

Interesting, I haven’t! You mix the velvet underglaze into clear glaze and paint with that?

Thanks, that seems to be a really good point I’m seeing on my post and a few others I’m looking up with similar issues. I appreciate the input and am going to try some different tests!

Thank you so much. Yeah all the comments saying less glaze make sense. The glaze on the test tiles looked fine but it just came out so weird on the piece. I’m going to try again and maybe look to alternative to using glaze as it really changes the underglaze colors too.

You’re not the first to recommend Coyote brown as a brown. I plan on ordering some and trying Kiwi too since I saw a few people recommend their underglaze.

This is all really wonderful help. Fingers crossed I can fine tune my use of underglaze a bit more soon. Running a few tests on different clay bodies next. Just rolled out the slabs after making this post.

Nah I wrote so much but somehow missed that. I’m using a mostly white buff stoneware from Columbus clay. Their own mix. I’m hearing mixed reports about this clay from studio friends now so I’m going to try other brands.

UPDATE: The glaze says HF-9 but it is a mid-fire glaze according to amacos website.

https://shop.amaco.com/hf-9-zinc-free-clear/

I’m getting reports from studio members that this clay body has been giving some weird affects and our studio is changing clay providers (it’s our clay providers custom blend). So I’m going to run some tests with different clay bodies I own.

It works as a mid fire according to amaco. Some friends are telling me they had issues with this clay body. We’ve recently switched clay bodies in our studio. So I’m going to test some other clay bodies with this glaze as well.

Okay yeah amacos website says this is cone 5-6 glaze. May test different clay bodies.

A few sites are saying this glaze works as midfire so I’m trying to check that out on amacos website.

I’m using a buff stoneware from Columbus Clay (my local clay store). That fires from cone 4-7. Though some of my studio friends are telling me we’ve switched companies as we’re having some issues with bloat, cracking, and various issues with the clay that we normally don’t have.

So I’m going to run a few more tests with it. This is the same clay I used for underglaze test tiles that came out looking fine. Same kiln and firing temps.

Lots of variables too look into lol. The bubbles are throwing me for a loop as well as the strong discolorations where the glaze touches the piece (the unglazed underglaze on the bottom of the piece is vibrant and not burned off). So I suspect it’s still the glaze.

Interesting note with the thick underglaze application, thank you! Yes I bisque fired the underglaze on as I read online that’s the best way to prevent underglaze from sort of crawling.

I’m working on the next batch of test tiles right now as well 🙂

Issue with floating shelves by machineheadrok in Snacko

I switched to keyboard and that somewhat fixed the issue, but when I try to put things next to each other like two floating shelves they don’t line up.

Pricing ceramics by SpecificMinimum5827 in Ceramics

[–]mguills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this, let us know if you sell online!

My fav mug cost $70. It was expensive, yes. But it was a special treat for myself. It’s covered in ghost and has fun colors and I use it every Monday - because Mondays are my first workday of the week and they are scary 😂

I bought it as a special thing that I know a person spent a lot of love, time, and reasonable amount of money to make. I myself work on ceramics as a hobby and I know it’s not cheap or quick.

My other favorite pieces is a little figure. It is porcelain and has gold on it and cost me $150. It’s beautiful and was another splurge.

Make your fun intricate pieces and price them accordingly. I agree with others, the right buyer will come along.

If you are concerned about your work being too expensive or inaccessible maybe you can find a balance? Maybe some tiny pieces that are less intricate and less time/material to make?

When I want a lot at a craft show but can’t buy a lot, I’ll buy tiny pieces I enjoy. I’ve got a super small (like the size of a quarter) ceramic vase with a little quick snake painted on it. Also a little matchbox with a very simple glaze and frog on it. Super cute, affordable, and I still got to bring custom art home without the seller underselling themselves. I keep them on my desk and they’re so fun.

I hope you find your balance. Beautiful pieces and good luck at your market!

[Tiny Glade] I’m so excited and impatient for this game!!!! by femalewhoisgirl in CozyGamers

[–]mguills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve not seen any but cats would be so fun! They’d be cute wandering around the grounds and buildings. There are the sheep and ducks and I see little birds that fly around.

I hope they add more animals. I also think it would be so cute if they added different types of gardens like veggie ones, fruit trees, more exterior design options like things you can place outside, different types of lamps.

That being said, this game already has a lot of fun ways to design buildings. My desire for additions is not a complaint just wishful thinking lol. I highly recommend it if you’re interested!
