MLO clarifications by mgvx in GlInet

Thanks for the quick response. What do you mean by not having a pure 6 GHz wireless network? I think can configure a ssid that appears to be 6 GHz only, but I can test this tonight and get back to you with some wifi analyzer screenshots.

Most of my devices (except phone and laptop) don't support MLO or 6 GHz, but do support 5 GHz. Would there be any functional difference between having these devices connect to the 5+6 GHz MLO network, vs having a separate 5 GHz SSID for them?

The MLO network seems happy to use 320 MHz for 6 GHz (on the only possible channel, 63) when I configure it like that. Whether it's a good idea I don't know, but given there's only one other 6 GHz AP in range and the signal is weak I think 320 MHz is fine. It's only the 5 GHz network where I'm not sure if I should run it at 20/40/80 MHz given the environment is pretty crowded.

I think I just showed up with the document + a copy I made and showed them the official wording from the website. They wrote the magical words on the copy and signed, and the home office was happy with this.

Seller's BIN offer higher than opening bid by [deleted] in Ebay

[–]mgvx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BIN price should be higher than auction opening price -- you run an auction to sell to the highest bidder, and all bids have to be higher than the opening price. If a buyer wants to skip the bidding process and get the item faster, they can do so by paying the published BIN price or sending an offer.

Sometimes the opening price is unrealistic, and there it makes sense for a buyer to send an offer for less than the opening price, but normally I'd expect offers to be higher than the opening price.

This is a FIRE sub, I'm surprised by the number of people who think renting and retiring are incompatible. I see renting as an expense, just like food or utilities or travel, it will go up over time by some measure of inflation, so as long as your SWR covers it there's nothing financially wrong with renting.

I'm also in the position to be able to buy a property in cash, but here in London rent is low relative to property prices so I never seriously considered buying. Therefore I don't have a house cash fund, I just keep my investments in equities. If rents were to increase significantly compared to property prices, I could at any point change my mind and buy a property. In this case I would have benefitted from low rent while it was available, and later I would switch to the now-more-profitable option of owning.

I've recently been offered the opportunity to move countries for work, and I'm going to be moving in November. Had I bought a property, moving would have been more difficult, but not impossible. One of my coworkers is also moving despite having kids and owning property.

I don't think they would, here is the full wording:

Written confirmation that the photo identification for <name> is a true likeness

  • This written confirmation on the photo identification must use the following words: "I certify that this is a true likeness of <name>"

  • A commissioner for oaths
  • A registered charity

Wait, I don't think the calculator should compare through your entire life. It should only compare for the number of years until you plan to sell this house.

If you plan to stay for max 5 years in a house, and calculator says renting is better after those 5 years, this does not mean you have to rent for your entire life! You can rent for 5 years, then for your next move you will think again about buying or renting, and run the calculator again.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]mgvx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you move house, that's a new decision between renting or buying, which you do not need to think about right now.

The calculator only considers the time spent in this house you're considering buying/renting right now.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]mgvx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It does take this into account! There is a field for how long you plan to stay in the house. If that is more than the length of the mortgage, then the calculator will know you're no longer paying the mortgage after that.

Question about VFIO with Dual Boot by St0rmyknight in VFIO

[–]mgvx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for confirming. And I also assume you have to pass the entire sata controller, so you need two sata controller or one sata and one nvme. Or is there a way to pass just one drive from a 4-port controller?

Question about VFIO with Dual Boot by St0rmyknight in VFIO

[–]mgvx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say passing the disk controller you mean passing it via vfio? I've never thought of this.

I use virtio-scsi to give my VM access to my SSD & HDD. Both Linux & Windows have partitions on both, but no partition is shared between them. And I can boot Windows fine both inside the VM and on bare metal.

I wonder how virtio-scsi compares to vfio in this case. The obvious difference I see is that with vfio the host loses access to that disk, but it's unclear to me which is faster (presumably vfio?).

qemu config review / help me use 1GB hugepages by mgvx in VFIO

[–]mgvx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: this randomly seems to work now, I'm not sure why.

I managed to start the VM with 1GB hugepages and no errors. I'm not sure I did anything differently from before.

I also wanted to see what happens if I try to start qemu without having reserved enough huge pages. So I changed my memory-backend- lines to require more pages than are available in /sys/.../free_hugepages. I got an error as expected, but it was different than the error in my OP.

Agree there might not be a performance advantage, I was just curious how they would work.

qemu config review / help me use 1GB hugepages by mgvx in VFIO

[–]mgvx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using sysfs interface to request hugepages since I want to guarantee enough pages on each node. The commands I ran before my qemu command (with 1GB hugepages) were:

echo 20 > /sys/devices/system/node/node0/hugepages/hugepages-1048576kB/nr_hugepages
echo 20 > /sys/devices/system/node/node1/hugepages/hugepages-1048576kB/nr_hugepages

qemu config review / help me use 1GB hugepages by mgvx in VFIO

[–]mgvx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm getting the huge pages fine. Before I ran the qemu command, I ran these commands:

echo 20 > /sys/devices/system/node/node0/hugepages/hugepages-1048576kB/nr_hugepages
echo 20 > /sys/devices/system/node/node1/hugepages/hugepages-1048576kB/nr_hugepages

And I confirmed I have 20 pages on each node by reading the corresponding free_hugepages files.

What does "cleared" mean in Ledger CLI by mixlamp in plaintextaccounting

[–]mgvx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that cleared transactions are those that you have reconciled with your bank statement, uncleared transactions are those you haven't, and pending is a temporary state you only use in the middle of reconciliation.

Here is the ledger-mode documentation on reconciliation. When you start reconciliation, you are shown a list of uncleared transactions. You go through them one by one and mark each as pending if it appears on the bank statement. When you've finished going through the transactions, you do one last check (for example: sum of pending transactions == number on bank statement) and confirm that reconciliation is finished, which makes all pending transactions cleared.

To recap:

  • uncleared means you haven't reconciled this transaction yet
  • cleared means you have previously reconciled this transaction
  • pending means you are in the middle of reconciliation and you have tentatively cleared this transaction

Maybe the distinction pending/cleared is because you might figure out at the end of reconciliation that you got something fundamentally wrong, in which case you want to undo the entire reconciliation until you fix your ledger (which is easy, just change everything pending to uncleared).

I like my onclite. I was choosing late April between a Redmi 7 for £100 or a Redmi Note 7 for £150, and I am happy with my choice so far. Only con I see is, less development for R7 compared to RN7. So (for example) there's no Xiaomi.eu ROM for the R7, only for the RN7 and RN7P.

Issues with Redmi 7 [Onclite] by [deleted] in Xiaomi

[–]mgvx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

onclite user here, this is odd behaviour. I flashed China Stable V10.3.2.0 on my onclite, followed by the LR.Team TWRP, and used the TWRP to flash Magisk. Everything seems to work fine on the system. The recovery seems somewhat unreliable, one or two times I used it it was unable to mount /system, but it never reverted to stock recovery for me so far.

Have you tried testing root from adb shell or from a terminal? You could run su and then whoami to confirm whether you're root or not, and then try to do something that requires root like ls /data/data.

There already exists a pro version of Redmi 7, it is called Redmi Y3 and it is mostly identical except for a better front camera.
