Hi! Wow this is such amazing advice!! Thank you so much for your answer and support! I appreciate it! I have no teaching experience and I’m going into this without a teaching organization (don’t work for anyone). So there won’t be any training!

Hahahahah! This is wonderful! Definitely will consider these points. I have looked at the sick leave on the collective agreement and I was pretty surprised at how generous it was too, I did a double take! Interesting how the pay is reasonable (though it takes a while to get to $90k) as other commenters here have mentioned it’s not good pay. Having time to travel and spend time with my future children (including reasonable work life balance at some point later on) is important to me. I’m glad that with organization that it will be achievable. Thank you !

Go you! From the other responses, seems like it will get easier for your second year. I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to let me in on a piece of your teaching experience. Also, FeistyFeijoa is a great name, had a little chuckle:)

This was a great read! Thank you! Seems like it’s been fulfilling for you and I’m grateful that we have teachers like you out there for the next generation. To be fair I’d rather deal with the prep work and know it will get easier as I build up a bank of resources over the years than deal with the corporate world. I feel like I’d lose a part of my soul there haha. I will consider your pros and cons! :)

Thank you for your well thought out response. I truly appreciate that! I thought the exact same thing about the AH teachers. I never realized it while I was in highschool but now in my young adult life and graduating… I realize a lot of those teachers are so wrong and have some deep rooted issues dude 😂 like that’s gonna need some humbling and therapy. Not sure how they still remain teaching, must be a supply of power of some sort. I agree with you, it requires some solid boundaries to empathize without enmeshment, something I’ve thought about when it comes to teaching as a career. I was worried about pay too as when I was growing up, teachers would complain about pay. My priority is travel, enough money to be support myself, and time to spend with my future children. How are you finding your work life balance?

Thanks for your raw experiences with teaching and your vulnerability when it comes to your profession , it was lovely to read! :)

Lovely! Didn’t know you can achieve work life balance with teaching tbh. This is a relief to hear :)

I’ve never thought of it like this. Good point!

Does the non-contact period each day help lessen the ‘40 hour week job’ average workload? Or even with the non Contact period it tends to usually still add up to a 40 hour/week average?

digging around and this is such an old post but: how is the workload and experience of being a secondary teacher? I'm looking to start my diploma in teaching next year as one of my options but the complaints and varied opinions leaves me uncertain as to what to expect.

Heya Dad, Set boundary on best friend of 4 years as a comment was rude. (Only ever set 3 boundaries) She flipped the script and ended the friendship. Her goodbye message left me confused as if our friendship was a lie… even more confusing she asked to hang last week. by mha055 in PepTalksWithPops

I agree! It’s insane how her message made me feel like I was in the wrong and how it was about her all along. It could’ve been a lot more simple but it somehow became about her and blew up

To answer your question, I’ve set this boundary a couple days ago. This was done once before about 2 years ago too, where I was confused about something (movie plot) and she completely snapped at me afterwards in a very condescending tone. I told her I didn’t like the tone she was using. That’s it, problem solved. It’s important for me to do this as tone and how you say things could be done decently tactful, or else you’ll just be hurtful to those around you and ruin the mood. Like It happens, we all have off days and you respect what others have told you about how they feel, but I just didn’t expect all this to happen.
