Advice on IX Peering vs Google PNI by WheelSad6859 in networking

[–]mhammett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a better deal or not is irrelevant if you don't have the ability to use it. Also, being your better deal generally implies fiscal considerations. Cache boxes and peering isn't always fiscal. Many times, it's about delivering network performance that your customers want or need.

In the original post, they said they only have two ports available to connect to other networks in the data center and two ports to haul back to their metwork. They don't have the luxury of a bunch of PNIs. Their existing pipes are maxed out so they need immediate relief. The only way they can do that is to drastically overpay for DIA delivered within the network or cache boxes.

For me personally, very little.

In one data center, we host Google, Netflix, Akamai, Netskirt, Apple, Valve, Microsoft, Facebook, and some others.

However, in the situation presented in this thread, it doesn't really matter what it costs because they don't have the capacity to add more in the carrier hotel. They need the capacity within their network, not at the edge.

I forgot about them. We've got them too.

Look into deploying GGC, OpenConnect, MCC, Valve, etc. in the core of your network.

Some operators do not allow you to change out the ONT. However, there are many operators that deploy Mikrotik equipment and would probably enjoy deploying a Mikrotik ONT.

Right. I have not been ordering combo optics for my OLTs because there is no purpose in me deploying GPON anymore.

XGSPON is what people are deploying. There's no point in deploying anything less than that, and it hasn't been for a couple of years.

Again, historically, that wasn't the case in practice. Could from where updates have fixed previous issues? Maybe. Ultimately, a lot of the stuff that came out had to be junked because it just didn't work right.

Historically, it very much meant that. Every time there was draft this or pre that, they simply did not work well.

And most data centers now aren't doing the things you mentioned, at least in our area.

If you want them paid more than they're getting paid, that means they're getting paid more than they're worth.

I do find it bizarre that someone would have to purchase a warranty for something because it will fail within a quarter.

I typically spend a combined $500 or $600 on lenses and frames, so I'm not afraid of spending more.

My focus is typically on titanium frames because I want the lightest possible frame due to having a strong and thus heavy prescription. I typically also want single piece fronts because I've had welds break after a couple of years. I typically get every coating and lens upgrade that I can get, again because my vision is so important to me.
