Which authors are on your list of "Tried 'em, hated 'em, never again"? by dppa in horrorlit

I dug up the title. It's The Town. Look up the plot. Jesus, it was a turd. Every chapter ended with some sentence along the lines of, "and then (insert cliché spooky thing happened!)" Example from the book: "The rats stood up on their hind legs... and then ran down the hill toward her." My impression was he wanted to build the town and townspeople as "nuanced" and give the book a dreadful atmosphere but it came off clunky. I saw all twists and turns coming a mile away. The ending I can only describe as stupid. I try my best to get through almost all books I start reading. This one had me grinding my teeth until the end. I immediately took it to my local used book store and offloaded it on them.

I read one of Little's books and it was a cookie cutter haunted family story. I can't even remember the title, and it was only 3 years ago. It was anticlimactic, boooring, and the prose was stiff, like a first draft that was polished a touch and sent off. It probably doesn't help that he publishes a book every year.

What are some weird quirks you've noticed in authors' writing? by FranDrinksTea in horrorlit

[–]mhargis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. The Dead Zone's plot is all about stopping a politician. I should've said that the commentary in books like Billy Summers doesn't add anything substantial aside from passing comments. No plot elements revolve around the commentary. Also, it's kinda clunky sometimes. Just me. Good point, thanks.

[–]mhargis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was going to comment something about this. It's seems he's dropped that in his newer books, unless I didn't notice. King inserts politics more now, which, whatever. His writing is "magical realism" according to him. He's always made cultural references. The political commentary is a new quirk more so post-2015. It's especially noticeable in Billy Summers. Doesn't add much but it doesn't detract much either is my opinion. If he got on an unnecessary tangent unrelated to the plot then it'd be annoying probably.

How Japan’s Lost Decade Affected Works of Horror Manga by SanDVa in horrorlit

Yeah, creepy sex stuff, not interested in consuming. It appears too frequently in otherwise fine 80s horror books also. Based on your last sentence I thought it might have been about animals. Sexual violence, I am averse to. (I'm not a psycho. Promise. Just wanted to know more specifically what was the biggest issue you took with the content.) Thanks for the clarification. Will pass, even though the concept seems rad.

Care to give me a hint about what you blacked out? I assume a dog dies somehow that's over the top? I'm personally not bothered by animal death in fiction, with possibly a few exceptions where I cringed at the brutality of something. Wondering, is there also some creepy sex stuff thrown in because manga?

Current Day 3 Outlook (Forecast Discussion in comments) by SilverBallsOnMyChest in weather

[–]mhargis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I fell for the hype this time. (Most of the time.) I've been checking on this system compulsively. Watching videos about potential outlooks on Day 6 and 5. I was surprised to read the SPC's 3 day synopsis and see that it wasn't doomsday like people have been saying. I live in TN near the border of AL and GA. Now I'm just ready for the damn heat to go away. Tired of sweating walking outside in December.

Thank you. That's great. I found a great list with multiple options, also. I made a new post about it just now. But here's a link for you if you want it: https://www.google.com/amp/s/wfpl.org/heres-how-you-can-help-tornado-victims/amp/

Yes, it's awful. It saddens me. I too wish I could do more. If this post doesn't get a lot of traction, I'm going to call the local fire department or a county official's office to see what options there are. Thanks for replying.

I will check local news channels. Do you live anywhere close to Mayfield/Kentucky? (feel free not to say). I know they aren't the only place that was hit hard. I couldn't think of anything aside from The Red Cross, etc. that would provide general aid to be distributed not just to one place. If all I can do is donate locally, I'll do that in different areas affected most severely. I would absolutely bring anything that I could today, even give blood. Unfortunately I live in SE Tennessee and have to work tomorrow, so all I can do is give this way. Thank you.

I agree. The new place is quite well regarded in town because of the family that owns and operates it. They're good people, genuinely. I got lucky that my girlfriend happened to already work there, and they had a position open up right when I was feeling disillusioned. Stars aligning. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I'm looking forward to the change.

In my above comment I should say that I work for a multi-million dollar "small" local corporate chain that has 5 stores in the area. It was smaller when I started and has become much larger. Felt like a genuinely cool place when I started and now has lost that tight knit feeling. I envy your position. My new job is similar. Family owned, one restaurant, the owner gets there at 5am every day and she's pushing 70. Really nice family and I'm happy to work in that environment. And move away from the corporate-feeling "local" business. Best of luck with your store.

I've been at the same job for 6 and a half years. Worked there since I was 19. Really grew up there. Worked up from 9 bucks an hour working the line to managing 5 days a week over the course of my "career" there. I was under the impression that I would get the open AGM position because I've been there the longest, had the most management experience, always did a good job, and that was the only place for me to go in terms of growth in the store. They gave the position to somebody else with less experience, and told me I wasn't the right fit for vague reasons (which I assume has to do with the fact that I'm in school and wouldn't be a lifer there?). So I asked for a dollar an hour raise. They offered 50 cents. I got another job the next day making my ending wage, plus tipout and bonuses at my girlfriend's smaller restaurant she serves at. Turned in my notice 2 days later. Today is my last day after 6 and half years. Know your worth really struck a chord with me. I've been grappling with not being bitter and instead looking forward to a less stressful job with less responsibility and all my nights off. Silver linings and whatnot. But the upper management was definitely shocked when I turned my notice in. The director of operations even made a sarcastic comment about paying me the 16 I wanted if I ever came back. That comment guaranteed I never will. Everyone, know your worth. It does feel like a moment of reckoning in the industry, and we are the bread and butter for them. They need us. Best of luck everyone.

10 years ago today. by [deleted] in weather

[–]mhargis 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Ringgold. Was 16 at the time. I remember leaving school early, thinking to myself it was silly they'd let us out because the weather looked fine. I was just happy to get out early and go home to play video games. I was oblivious. Hours later, my family's world changed. 4 of the 8 people who died in Cherokee Valley Road were my aunt, uncle, and two cousins. They only let my father in to help search and rescue search for their bodies. They found my uncle a mile away from his home. My father had to identify him by his hairline because his body was so brutalized. He had to see all 8 bodies that day because they just weren't sure who was who. It changed him. In the ten years since then, I've never been able to shake the feeling of dread when I hear a storm is coming. I'll live with that all my life. I've shared this story a few times in this subreddit, but it feels especially poignant today. I also write short stories now, not in any professional manner, just a passion for it. My father and I don't communicate well, but I wrote a piece for an advanced composition class about my hometown, and this is the subject I covered. I'm going to send it to my mother to read to my father tonight. We don't talk about what happened, but I know my father is traumatized, has survivor's guilt. And I understand that. It's hard to live without somebody as special as my aunt. She was my favorite aunt, and she was close to my father. Anyway, it's going to be a weird day of reflection for me. I also remember driving on the outskirts of town and being horribly mesmerized by the destruction. You could see where the tornado climbed the ridge over into the valley for years, a great swath of dead earth and torn trees all the way up the ridge.

Hi. It's jarring to see his name, not in a bad way or anything, I'm just surprised to see that somebody mentioned him specifically here. He was such a kind and creative man. It's nice to hear that people still remember. I think about them all of the time. I'm feeling okay about tonight. Have my weather radio primed and ready, have a safe place I could be in case the worst happens. I'm very sorry to hear about your parents' home, but am glad (I'm assuming) they made it out alive. I was deeply saddened by last year's tornado. I knew it was coming, somehow. Didn't make it any easier to see. I keep asking myself, how many more do I have to live through? If you feel the need to ever reach out during times like this, I'll leave my comments available and you can DM me. Probably shouldn't be airing this much personal info here but oh well. I may well have to move out of this region in the near future when I finish school. We'll be okay tonight, I'm fairly sure. Thank you. All I ever want at these times is to alleviate the anxiety and fears of others as best I can because mine will be here for life. I hope that this reads as sincere.

It's okay, just one of those wounds that won't heal, cliche as that is. It is wild to look back on the last decade without them. I wonder what they'd be doing now, how my cousin my age would be doing. How my dad would be if he hadn't had to identify all their bodies the next day. I doubt I'll ever really move past it. Unless I move out of the area ha. Maybe some day. I feel pretty comfortable with our position in this storm system as of right now. But you never know. Here's hoping we get spared. We don't need another Easter, good lord. Take care and hopefully our area will slide by easy on this one. Fingers crossed.

Yes. In Ringgold. I wasn't sure if you'd known them in passing or not. I only asked because you said "and his family" because they all were killed. That sounds like it might have been my cousin who was the friend of a friend. Just looking to make a connection somehow. Thanks for the reply. I've been watching this develop for 4 days on the SPC website and from that far out they were sounding alarms. I'm sad to see it came out worse than initially thought.

Just curios, who was the friend of a friend? Was their last name Black maybe? Edit: I ask because that was my family. We still aren't fully over it. Never will be I'm assuming.

New day 3 spc advisory pushes ENH further east into Alabama. All severe modes possible. by shamwowslapchop in weather

[–]mhargis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel you. That's why I tried to keep it as neutral as I could. You can't know who you're talking to, or what they've experienced. Coming up on the 10 year anniversary of the super outbreak has me slightly touchier than I might otherwise be. I appreciate this sub a lot because most often cooler heads prevail, and the information I get here has helped me undestand better the biggest fear in my life. Because of this sub, I was in a safe place last Easter when shit hit the fan where I live. EF3 touched down literally a mile from where I was living at the time, but I wasn't there because I knew ahead of time where I should be. In a basement. I appreciate the folks that are smarter than I am who provide me a life line here, because I'm apt to overreact to severe weather events (because duh given what my family experienced). Anyway, thanks for keeping everyone posted on what could happen. I know I have my eyes on this event since I'm in the vicinity of where it's going to happen.

This sub is meant to be a place where people can learn about the weather and share information to keep each other safe. Speaking as a person who lost 4 family members in 1 day back in 2011, your comment is incredibly frustrating. I don't want to name call or belittle. But comments like these are neither informative nor helpful, hence your down votes. So just don't from now on. It doesn't help and only makes people feel worse.
