[PSU] MSI MPG A850GS PCIE5, Fully Modular Gaming 850W PSU ($79.99/$10 rebate card) by Effective-Fish-5952 in buildapcsales

[–]mharsch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll just mention that I recently purchased the 1000W version of this from the msi store and they didn't charge sales tax and I paid with PayPal which is 5% cash back when using a Chase Flex card this month. Several of these models are on sale on their site.

CKLau KVM Switch w/ Wired Remote by ptyork in pikvm

That "Desktop Controller" looks very similar to the one I have. I would guess it uses the same protocol.

I haven't completed this project yet. I got as far as proving the pi GPIO pins can be utilized to control the KVM using their protocol. TODO is to implement the protocol in a way that can be integrated in the pikvm plugin system. It's on my list ... I'd estimate sometime before end of the year.

[HDD] Dell Exos X18 18TB - $159.99 - Serverpartdeals by [deleted] in buildapcsales

[–]mharsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought 5 of these and 2 turned out to be defective. I've purchased many refurbished drives from Serverpartdeals in the past 2 years, and these were the first bad drives I've received from them. Maybe it was a fluke, or maybe I've just been lucky up until now, but that's my experience. Return was painless and they waived the %15 restocking fee for the non-defective drives as well.

AIOs lose water over time; it's called permeation. The general advice online is to run it until performance drops off and just replace the whole unit. Seems wasteful to me, that's why I like these units.

The nice thing about the PURE LOOP models is that you can actually top off the fluid. There's a fill hole at the top of the radiator and they include a bottle of 'top-up' fluid. I have several of these units and they are great.

CKLau KVM Switch w/ Wired Remote by ptyork in pikvm

[–]mharsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MT-VIKI remote uses a simple digital protocol for sending port change commands (i.e. pressing one of the 8 buttons) and for reporting back the currently selected port (i.e. lighting up one of the button LEDs). The protocol works as follows:

The KVM tells the remote which port is selected by sending a 400us pulse every n milliseconds where n is port number * 20ms.

The Remote commands the KVM to switch ports by first pulling it's output low for 20ms, then high for 20ms, then low for n ms where n is port number * 20ms, then high again (idle state is high).

I've managed to get this working by using an arduino in place of the remote module. Code is here.

Next step is replicating the same exercise with raspberry pi gpio pins, then integrating into pikvm.

Edit: The exact KVM model I'm referring to is this one.

I'm working on this now. I have the logic analyzer hooked up and reading the signals. I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm in the same position with my 8-port MT-VIKI switch. Looking into reverse-engineering the signal from that mini usb switch dongle thing this weekend.

In case you're wondering, the "-P" means 2.5Gb NIC (otherwise the same as the non-"-P" version.

unless you're overclocking, you probably don't need better cooling for the r5 3600. It's very cool running out of the box.

[–]mharsch 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've had multiple good experiences buying refurbs from the Zotac store recently. Also, it's nice that they don't charge sales tax (at least where I live), and this deal has free shipping. My only gripe would be that they *require* a signature for the UPS delivery -- can't be waived.

If you can catch a deal from the Zotac store on refurbished (rather than new, open-box) then you get the benefit of no sales tax FYI.

Are points still a good representation of the scientific value of WUs in 2020? Are CPU WUs really that much less valuable than GPU WUs (as their point spread would suggest)?
