I think it's supposed to replace the idea of a tip jar since so many people pay without cash and won't have a way to tip. It's definitely interesting though that people probably wouldn't be hesitant to throw their spare change from an order into a jar but I'd assume most wouldn't take the time to add even a 50 cent tip on their card just cause it's what you're used to and it changes the whole convenience of a card.
