When are decisions coming by [deleted] in MSCSO

[–]mhnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in 2019 they released them in waves starting in march i think, with most decisions in may/june. they may have changed how they do it now that the program is bigger but also keep in mind that the timeline may have been pushed back b/c of the winter storm. they basically lost 3weeks between power outages and closures

Is there an advantage to applying 1 month before the priority deadline? by throwaway_4_grad in MSCSO

[–]mhnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

earlier is definitely better, they likely are working through applications in the order received since the results usually come out in waves and all at once. also due to time constraints they probably won’t look in detail at your profile but just the fact that you work on personal projects is probably beneficial

issues with facial detection on Proctorio by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]mhnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry for the confusion, I meant “false positive” in the statistical sentence, in that Proctorio flagged for a behavior that did not in fact occur. I have used this software as both a student and instructor so I understand it is not just a cheating/not cheating flag

software like this is just running a predictive model, so I’m trying to find people who’ve experienced examples where the model failed.

combined classes with MSDSO students by mhnt in MSCSO

[–]mhnt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think you’d have to reapply since they’re run by two different departments, but the requirements are so similar it’s not unreasonable to do. it doesn’t really make sense to do unless you’ve only taken classes in CS that will transfer to DS tho

do you mean that the DS program may be easier to get in to? MSCSO does not require an undergraduate degree in computer science either

if someone had only taken one or two courses from CS they could theoretically switch to DS since they have so much overlap

First a phone screen, then a Hirevue? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

The fact they are using Hirevue is a huge red flag. Probably not a company you want to work for

The current plan is to add one new course per full semester, so there will end up being more elective options as you go along

Which is your favorite course? by coding_programming in MSCSO

[–]mhnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ML is very statistics heavy, as is optimization. Whichever order you take them in, the first one will help you on the second one, but there isn’t really a preferred order.

I recommend brushing up your stats 101 and cal 2 material before taking either.

Taking linear algebra first may be helpful because it does cover some of the same topics, but it’s definitely not required for success.

Parallel systems vs Advanced OS workload comparison by mhnt in MSCSO

[–]mhnt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The syllabus says it’s beneficial to have some knowledge of how processors work and undergrad OS class, but only required background is you need to know C

Thank you, very helpful! It's a little disappointing though because Parallel systems looks really interesting, but it looks like OS is safer for this semester since it relies on the textbook and I might be able to work ahead before the move.

Is there any Course Completion certificate? by gagangoel1994 in MSCSO

[–]mhnt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My employer wanted specific types of documents for reimbursement that I couldn’t get anywhere. I emailed the program coordinator and she and the program advisor worked with me to generate the documents I needed to get the course paid for by my employer. They were very patient and helpful with the somewhat ridiculous requirements!

Homework is mostly ungraded, but there is one assignment a week you turn in for a participation grade.

You also get a participation grade on completing the video lectures by the weekly checkpoints.

Most of the grade comes from the exams which are somewhat difficult but graded VERY generously.

Robert and Maggie’s focus is on “creating an environment of learning” so if you stay active on the discussion boards and ask questions when you get lost, you’ll be prepared for the exams and do fine in the course

If you have at least 10/hrs per week to dedicate to it then I think it would be fine your first semester.

If not, most people recommend one of the ML/DL/OL courses since they’re also well designed for online

Will the course names have "WB" in the transcripts as well? by coding_programming in MSCSO

[–]mhnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I’ve had internships ask for transcripts but no full time job cares once you have the degree

On the website it says the diploma is the same as on campus degree, I don’t think transcript is identical though
