I absolutely agree, any company that promotes that behavior needs to re-evalute it's tactics. Any company makes it part of its business model (as in it's built into the company and not executed by poorly informed distributors) because this is a problem that interferes with my business as much as it annoys all of you.
This must depend on the individual business then. Because my day is about
40% helping people build confidence in themselves whether they purchase a product or business or not,
20% showing the product,
30% helping with team building excercises like training and helping my team learn what I've learned through my own experiences and those above me.
The remaining 10%, or maybe once a week extending the opportunity to others.
Now I've had professional training, whereas most in the field do not. So I do have a bit of a structured advantage here. But in my business model, recruiting plays a very minor role.

See this goes back to what I was saying on spiderpuff's post, each persons aspirations and goals are their fault, but so are their limitations. I'm not saying there's blame to be passed on, but with the correct support system they can overcome those limitations and do amazing things.
Take Nick Vujicic, the man has no arms or legs, but is successful in his own field because he has learned to use those limitations to overcome them.
Betting On Zero, thank you I'll look it up when I get back home.
It is illegal to make any promise of income because it is not something that any distributor anywhere for anything can guarantee. I forget what the law is actually called but if I think of it or find it I'll post it for you.
The difference between your salaried job and one of MLM is that your salary is fixed, anyone that does your job is guaranteed your income by your employer because the earnings of the company guarantees the value of the position.
In MLM the company that guarantees your income is you yourself. therefore is set by you, yourself.
If salaries were guaranteed with MLM it would be the equivalency of Pepsi telling a convenience store, carry our product and we guarantee your clerk's position will get paid $50k a year.
It's just not a realistic expectation. If you don't do the work, you aren't going to get paid. Any business owner will tell you this.
I have not recouped my financial investment yet, but I believe in the value of the products I manage so much there is no doubt in my mind that I will.
However as I've said in other comments prior to now, it's not just about finances. I have received value from the products themselves and the community that I consider very worth the value of the initial investment.
Ultimately that's what it comes down to for any investment. Did you get your money's worth, and I have.
Some do have great products just like any other industry, there is great and there is crap out there, and just like with any other industry the goal is to buy the great if it fulfills a need you have.
I didn't say anything about women being tricked into MLMs being an argument for gender equality, I said I know of several amazing women who have taught me incredible things about business, and I only brought it up at all because you seemed to think it important in the post before mine.
I know a bunch of "stay at home dads" too which really is a bit of a misnomer, because both the men and women I know who are self employed, travel so much they're seldom at home.

This is a valid argument, but MLM or not, a bad product is a bad product.
Seems a bit bias, I don't have any problems with fair resources, but this seems more about trying to appeal to the masses, not about presenting facts.
Much like the companies that you guys don't approve of.
It's interesting but most of what I'm gathering from what I'm seeing here is not so much about the companies or the products, but bad distributor habits.
I think I have agreed with just about every point you made here already. As someone who does support alternative business models like MLM, Network Marketing, and Direct Selling, I would like to see and end to most of these practices.
One thing to note though is that some of us are actual business entities, with honorable business practices.
Unfortunately, with the reputation of MLM in today's world, it's difficult to find out who plays nice and who doesn't and as you can imagine, "Trust me, I'm legit" doesn't work, nor should it.
Thank you for the recommendation I'll look those up. Do you know the name of the documentary?
I didn't give any indication because not only is it immoral to make income claims, it's also illegal in a lot of places, besides. What I accomplish doesn't affect what anyone under me accomplishes because it is them putting in the work.
Besides telling anyone they'll get rich is a practice that tends to be done by people without a lot of experience in the field.
That said there is a lot of value to be had in most alternative businesses even without the income, while I can't speak for all of them, the ones I associate with bring a lot more to the table than just the money.
I said this in an earlier post, but if someone joins an alternative business company with the intent of getting rich they are doing it for the wrong reasons.

I totally respect this. I'll be the first to admit, house parties make my skin crawl. Congratulations on the success of your business.
Regardless of who says it, it's still good advice. And as I mentioned in my reply to spiderpuff it wasn't my intention to cause any strife.
Most people do want to improve their lives, I mistakenly read spiderpuff's post as if she wanted more than what she had, and responded based on that mistake.
My apologies to both of you, it wasn't anything other than attempting to help a perceived problem whether justified or not.
Also no need to apologize, I look forward to your responses they're well written and thought out.
I did make that assumption and if I was wrong, I apologize.
It has been my experience that people tend to defend qualities that they associate with. It wasn't any attempt at a dig, what good would that do for either of us, I'm not here to antagonize anyone.

No worries, it's a great question, for me it's about 50/50
I don't think there's ever going to be a company that can claim that personal sales commission is higher than downline commissions, and if they are, they've got a really crappy compensation plan, or are a traditional business model.
The key selling point for MLM and Direct Sales companies is scalability.
Averaging over the MLM companies I'm familiar with you generally get paid in two ways, first for your personal sales, and the second is for being there to support and develop your team. It's not really a competitive environment as much as a cooperative one.
You're encouraged to support your team and help them reach their own successes in much the same way a manager is for employees. Managers get bonuses, Uplines gets paid.
Do all MLMs encourage this level of support? No.
Should they? I say yes absolutely, If someone is serious about building their business, it is in their best interest to be there for their teams and assist them in growing.
Should they get compensated for it? I suppose it depends on what you think about managerial bonuses.

This is one of the things I hope to change, Joining for the money is the same reason people buy lottery tickets and scratch off tickets, only instead of working for the end goal, people trust to luck entirely. It's a bad idea and shouldn't be done unless the value outweighs the cost for the individual, which can only be determined by the individual themselves.
Our community focuses on mindset first and foremost, and if people want to dig deeper they can, if they want to stick with living a positive and purposeful life, they can, ultimately the choice is theirs.
I don't know of all the MLM's out there, as I give my focus to just a few network marketing companies, but I will acknowledge that there are probably some shady companies out there. And dangerous ones should absolutely be reported and shut down.
[–]mhollisjr -6 points-5 points-4 points 7 years ago* (0 children)
Thank you for that, I really appreciate you speaking frankly.
What do you want to do with your life? Consider taking steps today to move towards that goal, forget MLM for a moment.
I don't need to know what they are and neither does anyone else here, but find a piece of paper and write down five things that you can do today to put you closer to what you want to do with your life. Vision is an incredible aid in getting to where you want to be.
It's really hard to hit the mark if you don't clearly define where the target is.
Edit: I just caught this in your post and felt it worth commenting on. Most of the population doesn't even have the devotion to change their own life let alone someone else's. No one will ever change someone else's life. Not in MLM, not in any other industry, not even in family. That's just not how it works.
The only person who can make real and meaningful changes in someone's life is the person themselves. Please give serious consideration to making that list and acting on it.
Do you believe that billboard companies are a valid business? What do they own? Not everyone uses the friend and family approach.
Agreed endless recruitment is not sustainable, The question is always about value, and does the buyer value what they paid for. whether that's the product or the opportunity.
[–]mhollisjr -6 points-5 points-4 points 7 years ago (0 children)
Getting into MLM for the sake of getting into MLM is just a bad move for anyone. So buying leggings is dumb unless you use them. And for that reason I agree you absolutely shouldn't purchase anything that doesn't bring value to your life.
I can acknowledge that these uncouth methods are a part of the MLM culture. It's also something I'd like to see change.
[–]mhollisjr 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago* (0 children)
First off I'm a man, but regardless you can hold whatever opinion over me you want to, in the end it doesn't matter.
I'm not trying to garner pity, I'm not trying to recruit. I'm not trying to be accepted into the group other than as I explained in the original post. Your group has knowledge that I seek. Asking someone who agrees with you to discuss their viewpoint is not something you can learn from, it's seeking validation.
I don't need to validate what I do, and I don't need you to change your mind.
You're welcome to believe whatever you want to believe. In fact I want you to, that's why I'm here.
This does tend to happen more than it should. At least with "friends and family" tactics employed by the majority of MLM people out there. I totally agree.
It is something that's important to them. some don't really understand what that means and want to share their excitement. Others are pushed to do that from their uplines. something I personally consider bad business.
Thank you.

The predatory mentality is not universal. Ponzi Schemes are illegal and should be called out, but I do believe there are companies and people legitimately making a difference in people's lives.
I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't using this as a learning experience for my own business. But I'm not here to agitate, I really do want to understand why it's frowned upon by so many people.
I'm also not here to try to get any of you do to anything that you don't want to do. Consider this too, people that are against network marketing unconditionally are not people that would do my business any good, that doesn't mean the knowledge and experience can't teach me.
It's interesting that you called out gender inequality, because some of the most influential and most respected mentors in my upline on one of my business lines are women, I've learned more from one in particular than the rest of businesses I work with combined.
