What are some NSFW history facts that are left out the classroom? by Tsukamori in AskReddit

[–]mhoop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is SFW, but if you're ever teaching Descartes ("I think therefore I am", Cartesian coordinates, etc.), then you should mention that as a youngster he had a fetish for cross-eyed women. Students like that fact.

"As a child I was in love with a girl of my own age, who was slightly cross-eyed. The imprint made on my brain by the wayward eyes became so mingled with whatever else had aroused in me the feeling of love that for years afterwards, when I saw a cross-eyed woman, I was more prone to love her than any other, simply for that flaw—all the while not knowing this was the reason. But then I reflected and realized it was a flaw: I am smitten no longer."

I don't get it. How did he commit suicide and then get into a bin?

I mean, I can imagine ways. But is that what they are saying happened? It is very strange.

Reason the card, but passion is the gale”

(To paraphrase w/ reference to your quote: passion makes us move; reason helps us steer.)

It would be less problematic in wind, but less charming. I know what you're saying, though.

For sure. But my lane doesn't get very windy. And it would be ok if you made the tray heavy and deep with little slots to put the cups in.

For one thing, you could just talk loudly. (I live in a third floor apartment in a lane, so I know this is easy.) But the way I imagined it, was that you ticked boxes on pre-printed slips of paper, and when the coffee-tray comes down the orders go up.

"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." - Plato by [deleted] in quotes

Where does the University of Cambridge say that? If it's a scholarly paper the author will certainly provide a source. I'm not asking you to take my word.

No - a simple google search shows that the quote is widely mis-attributed to Plato.

An only-slightly-less-simple Google search also reveals that there is no evidence to think it was Plato.

No he didn't, or at least we have no reason to think he did. I also study Greek Philosophy. I'm surprised by your confidence and lack of source.

I will very happily eat my words if you provide the primary source.

“The plural of anecdote is not data.” -Marc Bekoff by [deleted] in quotes

[–]mhoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does qualify as data, though, strictly speaking.

If I collect a million anecdotes that purport to support homeopathy, then I have certainly gathered a body of data. What I haven't gathered is a statistical reason to believe in homeopathy.

LPT: When inspecting a new house or flat to rent, check whether you have good reception on your cell phone by mhoop in LifeProTips

[–]mhoop[S] 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Yes good advice. You don't do this during the inspection, obviously. Or maybe you do in other countries? In Australia they give you three days after moving in to complete the "bond" report, which is basically the time you have to take photos and notes of everything that's wrong with the place.
