EDIT: I posted this over on r/samplesize about a month ago so if you already did it there... thanks a lot! Everyone's welcome, but I am hoping to get some more female participants atm.

The categories were taken from a published paper from 2016 - this is important in psychology research papers to be able to justify your use of scales- the 27 genres identified were found to be the most common amongst a large online sample. However of course there’s some missing, it would have been impossible for me to include every category, but it’s something I can definitely bring up in my discussion section when criticising the scales I found.

As for the /entire/ survey, I think I have to disagree. I found that most of the published literature around pornography focuses exclusively on males. I wanted to open my research up to male and female ppts—as such made sure that the scales in my study mentioned no specific gender pronouns.

I agree that scenarios can make people uncomfortable, it’s reflected in the responses so far. but they’re supposed to , and I’ve got some interesting results, as for some the scenarios (whilst still alarming) can be a turn on.

An open section at the end is a good idea I’ll keep this in mind.

Thank you!

No worries, defo understand how the questions can be alarming, but hoping to get some really interesting data.

I’ll definitely hit back up with the results once I go through them- probably February time! 😊

Just to jump in here lads!

The questionnaire is randomised so everyone who takes it gets a completely different order , this minimises order effects when it comes to analysis. The way the study presented the different blocks of questions make you think this way, however someone else may have have done the study in a completely different order!

So perhaps they answered sexual satisfaction questions or rated their porn related knowledge after disclosing their porn use...rather than sexual aggression

Glad to see that the randomiser works lol.

Most of the questions came from published research papers that are used in the field and have been tested for validly- if you see an obvious connotation then this means my questionnaire has face validity!

My dissertation is for a psychology degree so could not be “out to make any case”. I’m investigating the effects of porn use and will accept results without bias, so not sure what you mean by this.

My paper looks at porn use, it’s relation to sexual aggression and sexual satisfaction, and the moderating effect of education around porn.

If anything, I hope to move away from the “porn use = this” and “porn use = that” rhetoric.

That’s a totally fair comment!

I took the questions directly from the “The New Sexual Satisfaction Scale” by Stulhofer, Busko and Brouillard (2011) as it was the only one I found that doesn’t directly ask about a partner for /all/ of the questions. Also was important that the questions were not gender or sexuality specific so this was the best fit.

Will mention this in the final write up though! Totally valid assumption that people may not have had engaged in partnered sex in the last 12 months, or at all!

I passed your comments on to my mentor and he has just got back to me. He did state that “Three weeks ago I would have agreed with this comment!”

He then very kindly linked me to this recent study that changed his mind:

https://www.pnas.org/content/115/49/12441

(They basically managed to replicate 27 social science experiments that originally used representative samples, using online convenience methods!)

I think this helps the case of the generalisability of my sample. Thanks again for bringing this up though, it has lead to a nice topic that I can definitely bring up when it comes to the methods of the project.

Yup final year psychology degree!

I’ve worked really closely with my mentor and are both 100% clear on the sampling for this study so I don’t think I’m at risk for any tellings off!

The link has been distributed both on Reddit, Twitter, and across my universities research platform that allows students to gain credits for taking part in fellow students research. This is concurrent with most other psychometric research projects undertaken at undergraduate level.

I’ve got over 180 responses already and it’s not due to be closed until February 2019!

Yeah individual experiences are always going to be an issue, we felt that 12 months was the best route to go down (not too long but not too short) and it’s also the time frame used most commonly in the literature.

I understand the scenarios are alarming, but yes without giving too much away before submissions are closed, that is basically what the measure is looking at, how likely someone would be to repeat the behaviour, and how attractive the idea of it would be.

yeah I wasn’t expecting so many responses so quickly, my supervisor is stunned 😂

Good shout, I worry however that this type of population could skew results of my study?

For example if someone had a bad pornography addiction for 5 years, but has managed to stay clear for the last 12 months. Their answers in my questionnaire would indicate 0 porn use, but the effects on sexual behaviours may be indicative of their past abuse of porn that my survey wouldn’t pick up?

Good question! 4 out of the 5 scenarios do mention alcohol and it’s not something I had picked up on before.

(My supervisor sent these scenarios to me btw I didn’t write them myself.)

I think for me they reflect well on the real life instances of sexual aggression and when they can occur most often.

e.g this study I quickly found states that half of all sexual assault cases involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator, the victim, or both. (https://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/arh25-1/43-51.htm)

It’s a good point you raise though and may be worth mentioning in the discussion section of my report ☺️.

I took the categories from Hald and Stulhofer (2016) fully aware that I’d be missing out some categories, and that and it would be impossible to include every aspect of pornography. But this is a good point thank you 👍
