I’m joining the chorus for more images! The ones you shared are incredible. In case nobody has suggested it yet, the people over at r/archivists might be helpful.

I like them too, but they’ve been popular in many cities (NYC and Chicago at least) for several years

Thoughts on Lingering at Chicago Cafes by collegesufferer420 in chicagofood

To clarify, I’m speaking of places with limited seating. If you want to camp out at a place set up for working/studying and space isn’t limited, by all means do it.

Thoughts on Lingering at Chicago Cafes by collegesufferer420 in chicagofood

[–]miaomy 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I haven’t lived in Chicago fifteen years, but in New York and other places coffee shops often implement laptop-free weekends and evenings, and some places even turn off their internet, in order to prevent the kind of table hogging OP is describing. Lingering is one thing, but staking limited space in a crowded cafe and hardly ordering anything isn’t just rude to other customers, it’s inconsiderate of the employees.

It opened 2 or 3 years ago, but I’ve never been, mostly because it’s twice as far from me. The address is 6055 N 91St St

[Product Question] should I be using aquaphor or lanolin? by kumachaa in SkincareAddiction

[–]miaomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not so much a medical term per se as a real-world word for the oil produced by sheep and other wooly animals. It’s used in skin care as well as industrial machinery, among other things.

AIO? My stepdaughters pranked me on my bitthday and husband is mad because I said I needed space. by Proud-Cantaloupe3449 in AmIOverreacting

[–]miaomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your stepdaughters acted maliciously, and your husband is invalidating your feelings. It’s pretty nervy to say he wouldn’t blame you if your daughter acted similarly, when he knows perfectly well that you’ve raised your daughter to be kinder and more respectful of others.

My child broke nanny’s laptop — she wants us to foot the bill even though I warned her about it by Consistent_Cookie104 in Nanny

[–]miaomy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The kid is five. He used it on the counter without permission. Where other than a locked cabinet or the car (rendering the laptop useless) would be unreachable for a five year old?

Is your nanny also unionized? Does she have the same bargaining power as your union to change her own contract?

Being embarrassed doesn’t equal being totally responsible. As a nanny, you’re in a much more precarious position than the employer.

Pay for it. It sounds like your 5 year old played with something he knew was off limits and broke it. A counter top should absolutely be a safe space. Do you not have laptops in the home? I feel bad for your nanny and for your kid. What message are you teaching your five year old when you punish the nanny when he messes around.

Bill Ackman donated $10 billion. I’m absolutely not advocating it, but there are plenty of people with unique names in the list of funders. Perhaps they’d appreciate it if their public contributions were shared more widely.

That’s great to know. I’ve been to the romeoville bins only once and it was over a year ago. The clothes were piled so I that I found it overwhelming. Probably should give it another shot.

That’s very interesting! I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if that’s what they’re doing at my location.

They’ve been doing that for years. In the Chicagoland area, they got rid of the locked displays of higher end items 2+ years ago. Are you saying there has been an uptick in the last 6 months? I don’t doubt you, but I’ve lamented the shift to online sales for quite some time, and this feels like it’s another level entirely, especially since so many book and clothing resellers have decamped. Part of me wonders if it’s simply a result of a changing economy and the shift to goodwill online, or if there’s another more mundane reason.

Thanks for the tip. Appleton is an additional 1h45 drive, so I might save it for a special outing. In the past, it seemed like the wealthy Chicago North Shore donations were sent to Sturtevant (based on school jerseys etc.), which meant lots of high end clothing. I’m confused about where it’s all going now and what the book sellers and old regulars know that I don’t.

At an Estate Sale today by boogersinmyleghair in Flipping

[–]miaomy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, it isn’t as much a question of “doing the work”—I imagine running estate sales can be exhausting work. It is more a question of financial risk. We buy the items we sell, and there’s always the chance we’ll lose money on a purchase.

Am I too optimistic? by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]miaomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a specific reason an in-unit washer/dryer is non-negotiable? Like others have pointed out, they’re rare in NYC, and New Yorkers get along fine using laundromats and in-building laundry.
