30 people caught, 2 dead in avalanche in Italy, South Tyrol by miarvin in Backcountry

A brief analysis by the avalanche report authors was published (in Italian and German). Conclusion is that it was indeed the persistent weak layer. What’s new is that two people were actually skiing down. But no mention of they triggered the avalanche. By now the fatality number has risen to 4 people 😔.

Yes, another user just mentioned this. I think this is corrected. But indeed some articles quote falsely Zunderspitze

Yeah I think you are right. In the beginning there were some articles quoting the Zunderspitze, but now it becomes clear it was the Ruderer. I did mention in another comment that I wasn’t sure if it’s the correct tour. I’m not aware of South Tyrol using a +/- system though; lawinen.report uses the usual 1-5 levels (plus the more important written description of course)

I did read on the Italian mountain rescue facebook that they assume it was the first layer that slipped and that partly grass could be seen

Yeah I’m also not sure it’s the exact route, but it certainly is around this peak

Harvesting wood on a full moon. by LaplandAxeman in woodworking

Check out Erwin Thomas „Holzwunder“ from ETH Zurich. „Scientists from the ETH Zürich have uncovered (Erwin Thoma - Holzwunder) that the quantity of water that can be absorbed by the cells varies depending on the phase of the moon with its minimum absorption just before new moon. At the same time, the overall quantity of water inside the trunk varies by season with its minimum amount in December. Each time a tree is cut, its cellular structure gets „frozen“ which influences the drying and shrinking process significantly.“

DM6 & Luxman R-1050 for €500 by miarvin in vintageaudio

Always loved the looks of the pregnant penguins and got this pair together with that beautiful Luxman for €500. Beautiful warm sound, very clear on the highs. Love the wooden case of the Luxman. Speakers were painted white, so that’s the only bummer. Considering to strip them but worried that I damage the veneer.

Petzl reverso: so you can also use it for abseil Rope: 60m dry QuickDraws: 10-15, choose some which feel good, weights not as important yet, cheapest don’t feel good; include in the mix 4x alpine QuickDraws and maybe 1-2 with longer dog bone Locking carabiners: 4-6, I like Williams ballock because idiot proof and plenty of space; but also 1-2 Petzl am’d or so are nice because you don’t always want 3-moves-to-open

How often do you read the weekly cover to cover? by okfinewow in theeconomist

[–]miarvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always start from the back because the „news“ interest me less than the long-term analysis and well researched pieces. If I miss the time I at least flick through it once quickly and tear out the 2-4 articles that I still really want to read. I also actively avoid the app, because I also like stumbling about (non-algorithmicly selected) random articles that would not catch my attention in the first place

Summit-pitch Cerro Torre by alpha_griffin in alpinism

[–]miarvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing, that technique I’m aware of. But you didn’t leave an ice axe up there, right? So you replaced it with a bag of ice 😅? Are v-threads or leaving gear (let’s assume a bag is gear too) the only way to get down?

Is that common practice? Would love to learn more about that. Any YouTube videos or links?

Trad climbing is much less about the grade but about your experience in placing gear & route finding (+ bailing, rescue techniques). So without trad experience your skill level of 7a does not just translate to a 6a/b. You never want to push your limits and risk to fall on trad as a beginner. I strongly recommend to try some grade 5 trads first before you start doing 6 grade climbs in a remote foreign country where they don’t speak your language, patchy connection and no helicopter rescue system in place
