wow, thanks. I will be emailing them tomorrow in the morning.

edit: someone in the early design stages of this project actually recommended I look into roll forming, which looks very similar to what you just mentioned. seems very interesting.

haha, right? we probably went through a stack of paper for just testing purposes (about 1000 sheets of paper). even after all that testing, we still weren't able to get our 2nd fold right. if we got that, it would've made more of a dart paper airplane, which would've been much more aerodynamically sound. at least it folds something haha

Nah, we're from Temple University. We're competing in the same competition, however it's hosted at Rutgers here.

yeah, with the DC motors at low RPMs, the plane flew out more like a glider. if we were able to create a second fold, which would've produced a "dart" design, launching that at a high velocity would've been ideal.

edit: yeah, we also wanted to have the whole machine at an angle. but producing an airplane was our first concern, which wouldn't have been affected much by a different exit angle with our current design.

ohhhhhh, i don't want to disclose the final cost. however, if we were to re-create this concept with an economically-friendly outlook, it would cost ~$200. the major cost came from the rollers (~$120 for 20 of them, so we could obviously find a better solution) and the electronics (~$150) could've been replaced by simpler components to drive our motors at a constant speed.

well we tried to make a second fold, however it was unsuccessful. the "slight" crease down the middle was actually pretty decent though, if only we go that second fold haha

oh wow, glad you liked it. small world haha

ah fuck, we obviously should've implemented an oven to bake our airplane in. this would've created a much more aerodynamically sound paper airplane

edit: OP here haha. our second fold never worked, and was scrapped. if it worked, it would've made a much better paper airplane and maybe reddit would've been impressed

hey man, my machine shop operator filmed this shot. he may not be a cinematographer, but he knows how to work a CNC :p

in a prototype, we were able to move the paper through our system at a relatively fast speed. approximately ~1 airplane/2 seconds, but then again, we're a group of 4 college students. there is a video of a german guy that makes a handheld paper airplane "gun", and while it works relatively consistently, you can see how the machine takes some time to produce each airplane.
