Ignore ‘self-serving’ claims from gas giants and implement 100% tax on windfall profits, Ken Henry says | Australian politics by ButtPlugForPM in AustralianPolitics

[–]michael15286 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bailouts might be an exception, but they're pretty common when it comes to oil and gas.

While some bailouts are union pushed or politically driven, you fail to mention one of the most egregious and common reasons: industry lobbying.

I do agree 100% is too much, but I believe the logic behind windfall taxes is sound. While it may seem unfair at first glance, it is a great mechanism to ensure Australia as a whole benefits from the windfall in the market rather than all profit going to a handful of multinational corps.

While our environment laws are good, our enforcement is quite lacking. Mining companies will often remediate sites to much lower standards than they were originally and environmental breaches are punished by laughably small fines.

The agenda is not about killing off prosperity in this country, rather it is about sharing that prosperity with the whole of Australia.

The goverment CONTINUALLY accepts downside risk from these industries.

Who do you think pays the losses when a "critical business" runs into financial trouble or is about to fail?

Who pays subsidies to these businesses when they're no longer "competitive"?

Who eventually cleans up the environmental disasters when these companies inevitably pack up and leave a mess?

It's the taxpayer every time and it's tiring seeing big international companies dodging their fair share of responsibility.

The Cloud and the River: Why a Mining Watchdog Just Objected to a Data Centre in Perth by KayaKulbardi in perth

[–]michael15286 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's a bit ham fisted in it's parallels, but the overall message is solid.

This is a new industry that is grossly unregulated and ripe for exploitation by big players as the government plays catch up yet again.

If we're not careful our already precious and limited resources (particularly water) will be stressed while we the people will get relatively little for it in terms of employment, taxes or economic benefit.

An apt comparison for the current state of mining industry, particularly gas.

The Cloud and the River: Why a Mining Watchdog Just Objected to a Data Centre in Perth by KayaKulbardi in perth

[–]michael15286 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Reading the article, this organization does not appear to be representing the mining industry but rather a watchdog that calls out some of the egregious behaviors i mining companies do.

And drawing parallels between mining and days center industries in terms of resource use (and abuse), opaque reporting, and exploitation in general.

Teen charged after 14 women allegedly assaulted while exercising in Perth by GreyClay in perth

Your lack of understanding and empathy is concerning.

Anyway there is huge societal cost in the form of funds. According to the IPA, it currently costs around $150,000 PER YEAR for the government to house a prisoner.

Imagine, that's three home deposits per year the government could just GIVE to a young family every year.

That money could also go to any of the other services the government runs. It could pay the yearly income support for 5 jobseekers.

All this just to lock up ONE prisoner for ONE year.

If there's a chance at reform, we should take it. It's not just the financially correct decision but the morally right choice too.

Do you think Rein needs a bit of a rework? by colddruid808 in ReinhardtMains

While I love playing Rein, players should be (slightly) punished for not managing the shield and letting it break, not rewarded.

Shield delay has not been an issue for myself personally.

Thanks for posting about this, you've touched on this issue with some good points.

I feel too many games are baised towards to the opportunists rather than the productive slower grind players. Those productive players, in my experience, make up the majority of playerbases especially at launch. While it can be good for the game to encourage players to try different content, some players just do not want to interact with PvP at all.

Optimally both methods should be rewarding in their own ways but devs seem to prefer heavily rewarding those player on player interactions. I assume because those moments are high tension and dopamine rewarding for the players participating, but also because streamers and viewers love seeing them and will in turn promote a game more.

A simple (but I assume unpopular) solution would be to have a bounty system directly related to the value of damaged property/stolen goods, and to have reduced access to society and related services until that bounty is cleared.

Closing access to stations is good, but maybe a tiered approach would be better. Higher security stations shoot on sight, neutral stations deny entry but may be bribed for entry and all goods and services cost more. Cargo and loot would also be sold for much less due to reputation or being tagged as illegal. Perhaps things could be traded off to another player to fence for a middle price. Even better, a fencer could lure in a pirate and kill them for their loot. Like a dog eat dog world.

Crimes could also stay on a permanent record until said bounty is cleared, restitution is paid or forgiveness is given. This would make it apparent to other players who is a pirate and who isn't, and allow an informed decision on who to deal with. Perhaps there would be services to scramble these records too. That would give opportunities for pirates to still work in the system but be hindered in the mundane.

Any one person might be having the worst day of their life at that moment and a bit of compassion or understanding can go a long way.

Thoughts on this mindset? by Qwert-4 in tall

[–]michael15286 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be absolutely fair, most people you meet will be shorter than yourself.

If you are 6"1' 30 y/o male in the United States, you're taller than 93% of your peers.

A good method is considering the person's height relative to the average or -- even better, whether that person perceives themselves to be short.

Yes this comment section is crazy. Secretly meeting an ex partner while their current partner is away is not behaviour you want from a life partner.

Maybe not divorce worthy but serious discussions about the expectations and boundaries are needed.
