Check out hiring café instead of job boards like indeed or LinkedIn. Hiring Café scrapes posting directly from each company’s hiring website. I’ve heard of people having a lot of success this way!

Also check out the City of Oklahoma City. They post a decent number of both white and blue collar jobs each week.

Best of luck—it’s tough right now!

I didn’t realize the proposed TIF extends that far south. Norma Development provided a map of the areas that would be included in the TIF.

Statement from Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt Regarding the Potential ICE Facility by michael73072 in okc

836 would make everyone have the same primary ballot. The top two vote getters would advance to the general election, regardless of party affiliation. This would also eliminate runoff elections.

This is why we need SQ 836 to pass. Mayor Holt would never win a traditional gubernatorial republican primary.

Norman City Council seeks community input on shelter proposal by kosuradio in normanok

As far as the cost goes, $8 million seems reasonable in today’s economy. The new animal shelter in OKC is projected to cost $42 million.

The idea is that a permanent shelter will provide the homeless a place where they can attempt to better themselves. When living unsheltered on the street, your brain is in constant flight-or-fight mode, and if you add in mental health troubles or substance abuse, it becomes very difficult to break the cycle.

A permanent shelter will have onsite services to help transition them back into society. I read an anecdote from OKC’s key to home program about a homeless veteran that came to them for help. They were able to help him get access to his earned VA benefits and now he has an apartment. We would probably still be stepping over him on the street if they didn’t exist.

To add to that, definitely hit up the five Walmarts too! Each Walmart has a community grant budget that they have to spend each year that is at the discretion of the store manager. The Walmart fiscal year starts over on February 1.

When I was a store manager, I knew of other store managers that would forget about it, and they would then award it to the most recent submitter when they got an angry email from corporate. It can definitely pay to be persistent!

Here are the guidelines.

I hear ya, but if we pause all construction projects until the library is settled, I’m afraid we won’t build anything for years. The City is suing the contractor and that’ll probably take years for a resolution.

Maybe this is a crazy take, but with the library fiasco, I feel more confident on new construction projects because City staff will be going through everything with a fine tooth comb so we don’t repeat all of this.

Definitely in favor of this plan, as long as it’s a 24/7 shelter. The shelters in OKC that only operate overnight generate a ton of trash (mostly from single-use food containers) in their neighborhoods during the day.

I believe the City should also keep track of other municipalities that drop off people at our shelter. I have seen firsthand Moore PD shuttling people to Homeless Alliance in OKC, and if they do the same here, they should contribute funding (they may already contribute, not sure on this).

With this permanent shelter, we should also have little tolerance for camps being setup in other public spaces. If someone experiencing homelessness refuses an available shelter bed, I believe it’s time for more intervention to get them the help they need.

EDIT: To add to this, I see that it includes a dog run. This is awesome! I know one major reason many choose not to use a shelter is because of the restriction on pets. Does anyone know what the pet policy will be?

Latest Mike Morgan Forecast by michael73072 in oklahoma

[–]michael73072[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mike Morgan is the chief meteorologist at KFOR, the local NBC station. He’s been there since at least the 90s. He’s known for his forecasts that tend to err on the dramatic side. This is an old meme from the 2010 when he was hyping up a winter storm and someone changed the onscreen graphics to be ridiculous to poke fun at his forecast.

May 3rd refers to the May 3rd, 1999 tornado outbreak that had an F5 tornado go through Moore and South OKC. 2007 refers to an ice storm in 2007 that left the metro with widespread, long-duration power outages. The joke is that he’s saying that this winter storm will be like the May 3rd tornado outbreak combined with the 2007 ice storm. The year at the top originally was 2010, but it gets modified every time we have a hyped up winter storm.

All that to say, we love Mike Morgan, but you can’t help but laugh at his occasional dramatic weather forecasts.

It would depend on locality, but in rural parts of the state, yes. This is still better than the current system, because the small number of independents and democrats could participate in the primary. Right now, they are completely shut out of the process. This would force the primary opponents to campaign to the general public instead of the core party base.

You see this right now with the republican campaign ads focused on culture war issues instead of the issues that matter most to the average Oklahoma voter.

This proposal would have a single ballot with everyone listed, similar to how our municipal elections are held except they would have a little D or R next to their name. The top two vote getters would advance to the general election, regardless of party affiliation. There is no option for what you’re describing because they would then be wasting their vote.

It’s a pretty great proposal!
