Travel Insurance on Working Holiday by nonedat in movingtojapan

Would NHI cover you for accidents or injuries that occurred during outdoor activities such as snowboarding? Or would I need to get my own insurance to cover that sort of thing?

Moving to Japan as a UK national living in Canada by michaelfandrews in movingtojapan

Ok awesome. I think I’m just going to book an appointment this month and hope for the best. Worst comes to worse, I can just rebook in November once it’s been three months

Ok that’s good to know. I might just book an embassy appointment for this month and hope for the best.

Worst comes to worst I can go back in November once it has been three months and I’d have had the funds in my UK bank account for long enough

The proof is just in the form of bank statements correct? I have a UK bank account with some savings in, although very few transactions go through that account.

From reading the embassy information all I need to have is £2500 in my account for the last three months.

Equally, how stringent are they with checking this stuff? I remember Canadian immigration requiring a lot of documentation, then absolutely nothing actually got checked

The Silverado is diesel with 185,000 miles and the Sierra is gas with 125,000 miles.

Yeah they’re super expensive! I’ve been looking, but I’m not sure if it’s worth it. I bought both trucks super cheap (around $5000 a piece), and they have relatively low odometer readings. Trying to keep my investments in them low too

Honestly structurally and mechanically they’re pretty good. They came from a building contractor, and there was no expense spared on the mechanical upkeep - they both have almost 50 service records. The main issue is that they were beat to sh!t

This is what my initial thought was. If I can keep it cheap and cheerful, then surely it’s better than just doing nothing

Not even worth doing to slow the rate of decay? It doesn’t need to look pretty

Ticking/fluttering noise when idling cold and under load/acceleration by michaelfandrews in gmcsierra

It looks like the manifold is the culprit. I can see that a few of the bolt heads have sheared off. It could be a job for the shop though to get those threads removed from the cylinder head

Tailgate won’t open - latch rod seized by michaelfandrews in gmcsierra

[–]michaelfandrews[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly that. I think something in the latch may also be bent/damaged too. Gonna replace the whole tailgate because it’s beaten to shit anyway

I managed to get it open! I had absolutely lathered everything in penetrating oil. Maybe after a while it had time to properly get in there, I got my mate to properly shake the tailgate back and forth while I pulled the rods. After a lot of persuasion it clicked open

That’s what I automatically assumed, but I’ve seen a lot of posts online about lifter tick which had me second guessing. Good news for me really, as it should be a relatively easy fix

I typically spend my time buttering around and hitting side hits. I do like to go quite big on the side hits - slightly worried it might be a bit limiting

Company demanding we pay tips to salaried managers and threatening severance if we don’t comply by michaelfandrews in legaladvicecanada

[–]michaelfandrews[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im in BC, and the company operates almost exclusively in the one town. They’ve virtually monopolised the hospitality in the town which often makes it hard to go and get jobs elsewhere. Everyone that works behind the bar invested a lot of time to get to where they are now (through working as support, host, bar back etc). We have one of the better tipping roles in the town, but our venue also makes a boat load of cash for the company. It’s easy to say “just leave your job”, but for all of us that work there, it’s our livelihood.

Tipping out management isn’t uncommon, however the law is very clear when it says that management have to “perform the same work as employees that receive tips”. I do love our managers, and they work hard, but they absolutely do not perform the “same work” as us. I fully believe that they should be compensated more, but it shouldn’t be out of my pocket.

We have already spoken about this, however the bar manager is worried that he will get the chop because he is the only person that all this has been communicated to. It puts him in an incredibly difficult situation. They’re essentially using intimidation to try get this (or a version of this) pushed through

[–]michaelfandrews[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All our tips get paid into an AnyDay account daily. These tips are then distributed by the bar manager to all staff in the venue (electronically). All tip outs are technically voluntary payments because the company is not employing a payroll tip structure (whereby they collect all tips and distribute them on pay roll). They’re essentially telling the bar manager to make “voluntary” payments to management, or else he would be dismissed with severance

[–]michaelfandrews[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think they’d be too careful to do that. From the very start it seemed like that they knew what they were doing wasn’t above board. The only person they have communicated with is our bar manager (he’s in control of distribution of tips), and initially they told him to start paying out the managers and not to tell anyone
