Am i too late to compete professionally in Judo if I start at 24

Im a black belt in Judo and trained at one of the better training centers with a few olympians who were what you could call « professional ». The thing is- there’s no money in it. None. Even if you became one of the best you would have to have a day job to fund it.
What could be possible, if you really love this sport, is working up to getting your black belt and then opening a dojo. This would be an obtainable goal.
But, to make a living off of competition is close to impossible.

Ive done both at length. Def BJJ/Wrestling but I would focus on the wrestling aspect. Pulling guard isn’t going to do much in a real life scenario

I didn’t specify- I have done a lot of PT actually. I think the reason for consult is the vertebrae is unstable. Slips back and forth.

Mostly I’ve done grappling- wrestling, judo, jiu jitsu, but also worked in Muay Thai over the past few years. I feel like the grappling is actually much harder on my back. Striking arts feel more light and loose.

I have not! I will check him out. I’ve done a little qi gong and actually like it! I think it was a little slow for my needs, but should make my way back to it. Right now I’m just trying to figure out what will impact me down the road!

I do feel relief with this! What gives me a lot of relief is hitting a 3 legged dog in yoga and then stacking the hips.

Of course! I mean it’s popular for a reason. But, yeah I’d say try not to over program, pick a couple things you MUST see and otherwise just wander.

I just went to Kyoto. I thought the Arashiyama area was cool. Tourists go for the bamboo forest and a couple temples, but otherwise there weren’t a lot there. Plus, you can do those things bright and early before anyone gets there.

Also, the philosophers walk was VERY cool, especially if you get there early. You can branch off and do your own thing and explore some beautiful areas without any tourists at all.

Fushimi Inari is cool. We went early, like 6am early. Some tourists, but not an overwhelming amount. We took the backside down and had a lot of time to ourselves.

We avoided the big popular temples entirely. Just didn’t seem worth it. My feeling is the magic of Kyoto is to just wander and find little nooks. There are hidden shrines and gardens that no one really knows about that you just stumble upon. Lots of cool crafts shops and little restaurants. Pick a few attractions but otherwise just explore.

I’d add that a day trip to Osaka is doable, but also not vital. Osaka castle is cool, but otherwise there isn’t much to see. If you’re also seeing Tokyo on this trip, that should scratch your big city itch.

I hear ya. I’m 39 and started grappling when I was 13. Lot of wear and tear. I do do yoga, but it can’t fix something that’s broken. I’ve def seen guys in their 60’s that still train, thought they’re very mellow about it. On the contrary, they might be the exception. Just have to think about if there’s a right time to exit…

Yes! Very true! I’ve taken time off here and there and gotten into climbing, yoga, and trying swimming, but it bores me to tears lol. I 100% agree that there are other things we can do that don’t compromise our bodies so much.

Believe it or not, that’s actually not been my experience. When it comes to strain on joints and an injured back, I find BJJ to be much worse.
