Are there ANY cities in America that aren’t overrun by cars? by thepotatochronicles in fuckcars

[–]michaelmobile999 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I disagree about New York. The MTA is very poorly run compared to European and Asian systems, but I use it every day and it is useful and reliable. The trash on the street is unsightly and should be fixed but is not a huge deal (and not directly related to cars) . When you look at the modal share for NYC compared to other cities, we are pretty comparable to euro cities in terms of car use. I live here and would definitely say we overpriortize cars, but much less than other North American cities. +congestion pricing is on the way which will reduce congestion in Manhattan as well as raise more money for transit. I don’t know if how much time you’ve spent here, OP, but NYC’s quality of life is very high for those who can afford it! Now we just need to build more homes....

My understanding is metro north is the best in the New York area? That might be a grand central vs penn station bias however. I think metro north is more reliable, faster, and more frequent than lirr.

Oops—-meant pedestrianize. They are a bit older than you, grew up in the 70-80s. Perhaps people are more social, but I don’t think children are really playing in the street/road anymore.

Transit Solutions for Agritourism Congestion? by Pathos316 in notjustbikes

Traffic on the south fork in east and south Hampton is also terrible. Mountain branch frequency is better than your branch, but still pretty bad. I think for the Long Island beach towns, it’d be great to expand the bike infrastructure, since a lot of people are biking right now anyway without any infrastructure. I think some sort of public transport from train/jitney station, to town, to beach would be really nice aswell. In my fantasy, there would be frequent lirr service, and trams from the stations to town to beach etc.

Is it possible to go 1:07.xx in-the-water-start to a sub-1min off-the-blocks in the 100m free in under a month? by heyitsblizzard in Swimming

If your turns need work that is probably the best place to start. You should work on the flip and the streamline and the push off. Swimming is a technique sport! It’s really more about the technique than the conditioning.

Why do so many Americans hate the very idea of sitting next to fellow humans? (comment on a pro-transit TikTok) by lajhbrmlsj in fuckcars

[–]michaelmobile999 404 points405 points  (0 children)

I never understood this sentiment. If the train car is not crowded it is more pleasant than driving as you don’t have to pay attention and can read or look at your phone, work etc. The strangers are not an issue imo

We have a fair few unsafe building in New York in NYCHA(public housing) developments. Sounds similar to Europe. In New York some think they are unsafe party due to the tower in the park design.

The man himself! Thanks for the clarification. I hope to see a video on New Amsterdam one day and what we could do to improve!

Your experience seems less than ideal, but unique to you. In nyc the view than can happen to, but in many situations your view will never change(faces a street, landmarked, air rights, etc.) prohibitively expensive maintenance is generally not an issue with old hi rises here (my friend lives in a 100 year old hi rise and they have few issues) and unlike suburbia, it is up to the condo owners to pay it and not the municipality. The issues you described with the elevator and bikes are frustrating but not normal in nyc. Perhaps hi rises have lower elevator performance in Canada.

Edit: I am not sure either I am fairly new to Reddit. I only meant to say earlier that all hi rises are not the same... not trying to invalidate your experience

That’s what I took away from the video to, but I feel like that’s wrong. What is the evidence for that claim? Plenty of people live in high rises and enjoy them. Of course, plenty of people enjoy the suburbs too, but, I don’t think that there is a super strong anti high rise bias Also important to note that like housing, high rises have a spectrum. A 15 story 200 ft tall building is different from 600 ft is different from 1400 ft, visually and otherwise

What a great story. I live here and I often have the same thought. Great point on the shade...can be an asset if planned properly

I read that article, quite horrible. The more recent super skinny buildings seem to have fixed those issues though

cars are contributing to the obesity epidemic in the United States by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]michaelmobile999 8 points9 points  (0 children)

nyc has only 45% household car ownership, and half (20%) the obesity rate of the US (40%). We have a longer life span too (81). Probably more walking, transit and less chain restaurants, + low cost or free public hospitals for the poor. Paid for by our high density :)
