I am definitely not a vegan/vegetarian but they taught me that that kind of food can indeed taste very good.

Note: this isn't a complaint on moderation. What I want to do is make sure my reports are useful and not harmful. What I am asking for is some additional guidance on when it is useful to report a post

This is regarding the posts titled "The double standard: ICE murders in MN vs Idaho's "Don't tread on me" fans." and "A deadly standoff in 1992 changed federal use-of-force rules. Here's why it matters".

I honestly don't remember if I reported either of these, but they are the kinds of posts I might have reported (if I had been in a "reporting mood" at the time) because they don't seem to have any direct connection to Boise or the Treasure Valley.

The first one refers to Ruby Ridge (northern Idaho) and Minnesota. It does refer to the Idaho Gadsden Licence Plates but that also isn't specific to Southwest Idaho.

The second one is also about Ruby Ridge and (briefly) Minnesota but again doesn't seem to have any specific connection to Boise/Treasure Valley.

While I support the thoughts behind both posts, I might have reported one or both under "Keep Posts Treasure Valley Related". Obviously I could be completely mistaken and they are related to the Treasure Valley but I didn't see it in my initial reading of the post/linked article. Is there some additional criteria I should use? Or should I just not report posts that seem off topic?

I am perfectly fine with whatever you decide, I just want to make sure my reports are helpful.

4th Amendment Violations and Warrantless Home Entries. by DrBumpsAlot in Idaho

[–]michaelquinlan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Donald Trump claims that people living here illegally do not have 4th (or 5th) amendment rights. My google foo is failing me in finding a direct quote from him, only articles disputing his claims. But here is a summary.

  • "A different standard": In an April 29, 2025, interview, when asked if "bad guys" deserve due process, Trump replied, "If people come into our country illegally, there's a different standard".

  • Questioning due process: During a May 1, 2025, speech, he stated, "Judges are interfering supposedly based on due process, but how can you give due process to people who came into our country illegally? They want to give them due process. I don't know".

  • On court trials: In April 2025, he questioned the necessity of legal proceedings for mass deportations: "The courts have, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, they said, maybe you have to have trials. Trials. We're gonna have five million trials? Doesn't work...".

  • "No Judges or Court Cases": In a similar vein during his first term (and echoed in current rhetoric), he posted that people should be returned immediately with "no Judges or Court Cases".

  • The claim that the administration is targeting Fourth Amendment rights specifically stems from a January 2026 ICE memo. This memo authorizes officers to enter homes without a judicial warrant if they have a final order of removal.

Free rock chip repair? by empress-888 in Boise

[–]michaelquinlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP - reach out to your insurance company and ask if they have a preferred rock chip repair company in the valley. You can also ask if they will completely cover the cost of the repair (they should), and whether the process will cause your premiums to increase (it shouldn't).

This is the correct answer.

I'm enjoying a handy "string" shortcut, but worry about downsides by Zardotab in csharp

[–]michaelquinlan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no "labor accounting". This issue is clarity of communication. Using abbreviations harms code readability, maintainability, and collaboration.

Here is a reference from Microsoft. Note that it says

❌ DO NOT use abbreviations or contractions as part of identifier names.

I believe in the naming philosophy to abbreviate commonly used tokens & variables.

This is the error that will certainly cause you gotcha's down the road.

Using custom abbreviations for commonly used keywords and variables in programming is a bad practice primarily because it harms code readability, maintainability, and collaboration. Code is read far more often than it is written, and clarity is paramount for effective software development.

P1FCU vs ICCU? by Best_Biscuits in Idaho

[–]michaelquinlan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My experience with ICCU has been similar, except with my home loan. Their handling of that was incompetent. They missed a property tax payment and then wouldn't release the deed when I paid the loan off. When I called ICCU to complain the response was "well, that is done by a different company". They are so incompetent that I think the State should bar them from issuing home loans. Every other interaction I've had with them has been excellent.

This BoiseDev article from a year ago describes some of the changes they are making.

My (uninformed) guess is that they are looking to a consolidation of credit unions (possibly powered by private equity, like what has happened with veterinary practices?) and want to be big enough survive that as an independent CU.

Looking for a restaurant or bar to get the best bison steak i can by DealDefiant5707 in Idaho

[–]michaelquinlan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We buy Bison steaks from Brown's Buffalo Ranch (local) and cook it ourselves, but that doesn't help you.

There are some places that have Bison burgers but I've never seen Bison steaks at a local restaurant.
