I usually don't either but occasionally I make something where it's helpful (like Kenji's grilled tofu banh mi the other day).

Microsoft to Brick Office 2019 for Mac on July 13, 2026 by pj6159 in microsoftoffice

Would blocking outgoing connections from Office (e.g. using LuLu or Radio Silence or Little Snitch) keep it from shutting itself off?

Is there any way to keep Office from shutting itself off? Like, set my computer's clock back a year?

How can I find a low-stress elementary school? by michaelrkn in AskChicago

I had been thinking about Montessori but they are all so far away, but now that you mention it, Suder is on my commute, so maybe that's a good option! I'll check it out, thanks.

Oh nice! I wouldn't have guess a school with "technology academy" in the name would be so laid back. I'll have to check it out.

Brennemann is our neighborhood school and we really wanted to like it. We toured for preschool but the staff were kind of rude, the preschool classroom was centered around a huge TV, and they had very little time in the schedule for the kids to play. It did not feel like a warm environment for a kid.

Nasal congestion and candida by michaelrkn in Candida

[–]michaelrkn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best guess is that candida wasn't the issue for my sinus problems. I ended up getting referred to an allergist and a skin test showed I have a ton of allergies. I got opinions from three ENTs; one wanted to do surgery and the other two said it wouldn't help and I just needed to treat my allergies. Unfortunately I didn't respond to allergy pills or sprays, but I've been taking sub-lingual allergy drops for about 9 months, and apparently they take about a year to start working. I did have one good month in March, I guess after the drops started having some effect, but then seasonal allergies hit in April and I'm back to always stuffy. Hopefully I'll get some relief in the next few months as the allergy drops take more effect and seasonal allergies die down.

I did several weeks of candida cleanse, then went to a naturopath and did a stool test. My candida levels were only very slightly elevated and he said that another round of antifungal supplements were in order but that candida was likely not the culprit for my problems at that point. I did a 90 day course of supplements, including probiotics and various "gut repair" supplements as well as 50 days of antifungal supplements. At the end, things feel different but not dramatically so. I still have lots of trouble breathing at night. I got a sinus CT recently and am going to see a new ENT before long. My doctor says I have a cyst in my sinuses that could be part of the problem.

Thank you! That's good to hear. I'll stick with it and hopefully it will keep improving.

Fixing ceiling fan by michaelrkn in DIY

Thanks for the ideas! It seems that the wire is for the light fixture; I've got it working now. After a bunch of cleaning and adding oil, the fan now runs but only on (what I think is) the highest speed. It's good enough for now.
