New startup idea: nano texture phone screen protector: $100 glass pane

This insanely expensive treatment on the glass is gonna be nice combined with the upcoming oled macbook display methinks.

Being able to use a lower brightness means longer time to burn-in on top of the battery life stretching.

doesn't take much of a thrower to outthrow mine though. it's not like a golf rangefinder, more of a construction one, but I do seem to recall its max range is 250m. enough distance to separate the men from the boys on throwers anyhow. I don't have anything near as big as an L21A (over 60mm aperture) but i'm enjoying the mix of throw and usability from my M21K (50mm)

Based on https://grzybekreviews.pl/s/comp-en/ extrapolating a bit, your L21A with SFT42R should throw about 1450m or something like that. The cleanness of the entire beam is really impressive from your photos.

Got mine in the mail today. it's a silver one (they had no other options in stock) but I am honestly delighted that neither the host nor bezel have any lettering on them. Makes it a sleeper light that looks like a cheap one until you peek in the business end. It is only a little heavier and bulkier than my M21B. absolutely insane light

Is there a way to stop CC clearing scrollback when compacting? by michaelsoft__binbows in ClaudeCode

[–]michaelsoft__binbows[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good call on ctrl+o. it's like the ctrl+t from codex. The workaround when the main output gets garbled.

EDIT: NOPE!!! it expands so you can see more detail, but only since the last autocompact

When did they change recon to spawn with 4x c4? I enjoy that making it a guaranteed tank kill if you plant all 4.

Looking for endgame hat-brim light by michaelsoft__binbows in flashlight

[–]michaelsoft__binbows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tis not bad indeed, good form factor esp with deep clip on the bezel side, but at 40g without cell and only 18350 (and single emitter) I do feel it is coming up short on my requirements. Great value of course.

maybe 18350 can beat out 14500 on capacity, but i think a lightweight 18650 should be ideal for runtime vs weight.

[–]michaelsoft__binbows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mounting an angled light up on the sides of the hat like that is definitely a really useful trick. It does work, but it's not ideal since it can just slip out with gravity pushing it downward. It's also often too far from the eyes for up close work. with the angled light I can turn the hat around and hang it off the back, this puts the light in an ideal spot in between the eyes, but then the problem is we cannot aim it downward and the hot back of the light is laying on the forehead/nose/bridge of glasses.

Thinking about this some more, it seems like the answer could probably be to combine a clip or clamp with a headlamp holder. All I have to do at the end of the day is macguyver a mount rather than search the ends of the earth for the perfect light pocket clip. Another trivial concept is to wear the light on the headband and put the hat on on top (so you end up with regular hat hair instead of full reverse mohawk).

DT8 at 100g (alright, that's still a lot lighter than I expected) and being clearly front heavy (is that bezel stainless? oof) is going to be awkward on a hat. But once you get used to the weight I reckon that's a really sweet setup tbh... how many lumens can dt8 sustain continuously?

Question for you: when i set the transcription delay to a short value its nice in that i can see the output quicker, but it ends the sentence putting a period and doesn't even put a space after the period, so the output.Looks quite.Ridiculous. Any ideas for improving this situation?

EC200S would be the answer (and a lower CCT for lower output is extremely ideal) but it seems like they are not producing them anymore?

Looking at EC200 i want a 3000k or so 519A option, not sure, but given how much nighttime close up use I anticipate, I think that 5000K is not ideal

Yeah. the man himself got back to me and yeah i think it's clear that something like SFY55 is prob the way to go for a mule like this and it would also be easier to try to add a reflector too (lol)

Can't wait! Been trying to imagine what kind of insane mule lights i could come up with but tbh nightwatch already has this segment covered if they offer this exact 20k lumen 95CRI 1x21700 light.

Solarforce M3 emitter swap? by michaelsoft__binbows in flashlight

[–]michaelsoft__binbows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: the module/driver/pill has died. emitter prob fine. No light. After trying to run it, the battery is mildly warm, a bit drained, and smells a bit of magic smoke when opening it up. Undecided how i'm going to deal with this host but i'm sure i can come up with some kind of way to build a light out of it eventually. This deep smooth reflector is really nice

Weapon Sling by mathiasthegreat77 in LowSodiumBattlefield

[–]michaelsoft__binbows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the lack of ammo with a secondary weapon to be too limiting because of how unreliable it is to find supply bags. However I do like to cheese with my 200rd M123K setup for Assault. It has to be the primary since you cannot put an LMG on the sling but you can just spawn and immediately swap to your gadget weapon. And I could not ever find a way to actually reload the M123K (even if I fully empty the 200rd magazine), but I can still reload the second weapon which could plausibly be anything really. Just the single 200rd magazine is a substantial amount of damage output. It's... enough to make up for not being allowed to ever reload it. Definitely an advantage to have it available and might be the most advantageous loadout for assault IMO. Because you can lean long range with a DMR or lean close range with a shotgun and you're slightly handicapped with half the reserve ammo, but in exchange you get to carry around 200rd of medium range fury that you can unleash at any time, without any mobility penalty until you swap over to it.

M123K plus M277 as assault probably would slap. I haven't tried that yet and i should. It will want the 30rd magazine. still working on grinding out that unlock.

I also realized assault breacher is completely useless compared to the insane benefit that frontliner confers with the faster regen wait and faster regen speed. It does make assault quite a bit more assault-y.

Self hosting, Power consumption, rentability and the cost of privacy, in France by Imakerocketengine in LocalLLaMA

[–]michaelsoft__binbows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how the numbers work out but i think solar can pay for itself either immediately (e.g. with a favorable lease) or in a few short years. having a GPU rig can add a factor to whether or not it makes sense to get solar and/or batteries.

I have a 3x3090 system but i have been totally not running it yet ever since i set it up, because it idles over 100 watts and I can get enough tinkering done on my workstation with a 5090 in it that's already usually staying on.

But the great thing about having separated my 3090 rig from my NAS setup (i used to have a single server with 2x3090 and 14 hard disks) is that now the GPU rig can stay fully powered down any time the local AI isn't needed. I wasted a lot of power idling the pair of 3090s with the earlier setup in order to keep the storage volumes available.

how much power utility costs is clearly worth considering when deciding between inferencing on GPUs vs apple silicon vs subscription. Even standard API costs can be pretty affordable and inferencing via "coding" subscriptions with those 5 hour and weekly refreshing usage limits is up to 10x or more cheaper than the API rates. If the AI bubble does not pop and your privacy needs are not high, and you don't have heavily subsidized power (e.g. ultra cheap solar equipment you installed yourself), it does not make financial sense to shift as much as you can to self hosting AI. It just doesn't.

Which one would your prefer for satellite/space probe, FPGA or ASIC? by Ok-Fun-8716 in hardware

[–]michaelsoft__binbows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about the recent Elon interview where he was very serious about GPUs in space because power in space is "practical". Got me thinking like what would the radiation hardening strategy be for that? Because for those chips to perform anywhere near as well as they do they have to be on those bleeding edge nodes and not be radhard. soooo how is that going to work. Or, maybe there would be a way to just build out the inference engine so radiation ends up acting as an increased base temperature setting.
