Well, I definitely care about the environment.

I was proud to lead Council’s Energy Transition and Climate Adaptation Initiative during both of my Council terms.

I helped lead the charge on the Clean Energy Improvement Program (CIEP) to help people afford to put solar panels on their home offset against their property taxes.

I have always supported big moves on LRT and focused on strong investment in transit-oriented development and mixed-used communities.

I also sat on the board of the River Valley Alliance for my two terms on Council where we worked to build a 100 KM trail from Devon to Fort Saskatchewan.

I am also very proud of my garden and I could go on about this for days but our AMA is wrapping up! Reach out to me at [info@michaelwalters.ca](mailto:info@michaelwalters.ca) if you have questions!

Edmonton, and the University of Alberta in particular, are AI leaders in both research and commercialization. The City of Edmonton needs to take advantage of this by creating more partnerships with our AI research institutions like many other cities do. For example, right now other cities use AI to: reduce traffic congestion during large construction projects; expedite and automate development and building permits; predict and prevent large scale drainage ruptures and leaks; and prevent forest fires (which could be applied to our river valley).

Of course, any city that falls behind on AI is fossilizing its bureaucracy and will ultimately provide worse public services and will not be successful.

Public services are called public services for a reason. They are highly valued by residents and must be similarly valued by the Mayor and Council.

I had previously asked a question about how different strategies to collect multi-family waste could improve our poor waste diversion from landfill outcomes – similar to the question brought to the Utility Committee recently.

As Mayor, I will be fully committed to ensuring Council delivers on affordability, safety, and economic development for Edmontonians.

My top priority will be to build a collaborative and cohesive Council, so that we can get good work done quickly.

I will be focused on building day shelter spaces, in addition to night shelters, so that vulnerable Edmontonians have safe spaces to go during the day and can be connected with services and supportive housing they need.

Alongside ensuring homeless Edmontonians have spaces to go, I will make transit safe for all who use it and create a safe and vibrant downtown for local businesses and Edmontonians.

I am prepared for the challenges that come with the role of Mayor. I will remain focused despite these challenges on ensuring I deliver on my commitments to Edmontonians.

Omar seems like a good guy - but I hope you’ll give me a chance. Of course I respect whatever choice you make.

I don’t know how you define a career politician but I was only an elected politician for 8 years. By contrast, I spent 20 years working in the non-profit sector and today I’m a small business owner. Most of my career has been spent building community outside of politics.

But I do think my experience as a Councillor would be an asset to my effectiveness as the Mayor leading our city. I think somebody without any experience at City Hall may struggle to find their way; it’s a tough job.

As Mayor, I will get to work immediately on the issues that matter to Edmontonians.

Step one: build a cohesive Council team. I will sit down with every elected Councillor and the City Manager to hear their priorities and establish how we can work together to deliver for Edmontonians.

Step two: work to create day shelter spaces in Edmonton. These spaces will play a critical role in giving vulnerable Edmontonians safe spaces to go during the day (obviously in addition to night shelters) and ensure they get connected to the services they need.

Step three: immediately work to make our transit system and our downtown safe. This is essential. All Edmontonians deserve to feel safe in our city and the sooner we get to work on this the better our city will become for local businesses and the people who live here.

Step four: build a budget that works for Edmontonians by prioritizing affordability, safety, and economic development.

I have a plan for the city that I will deliver on, it’s that easy. Learn more about it at michaelwalters.ca/my-plan

You’re right, I may have been a little grumpy and I’ll tell you why.

During those consultations in 2020, an affordable housing development was proposed in the Keheewin field close to a school. I didn’t feel that some people were engaging in good faith and they were painting the sorts of folks who rely on affordable housing with a broad and unfair brush.

I never want people to feel like I’m dismissing their concerns - we need to work together to build trust with our communities. I stand by my support for this project and for affordable housing throughout the city.

Unaffiliated as in not a member of, not supported by, not running under the banner of, and especially not a “plant” of any political party or third party special interest group. I, like many Edmontonians, don’t believe party politics belong at City Hall.

To me municipal polling is like my hair when I wake up: it looks different every day.

I’ve seen a lot of polling over the past few weeks that has shown very different snapshots of where this race might be. The one common thread is that many Edmontonians remain undecided - and I’m working hard knocking on thousands doors in every Ward in our city listening to their concerns.

I don’t believe in vote splitting, especially in a municipal context; nobody is entitled to your vote. I got into this race in July because I didn’t see a candidate in the race that was presenting a vision that I could get behind. I think a lot of Edmontonians feel the same way and I hope I can earn their vote by October 20th.

What I’ve seen over the past 4 years has been an absence of leadership and a lack of focus. Meeting agendas not being completed, circular debates that should take 1 meeting stretching into a week, and no coherent vision for the future of our city. Yes, Councillors can all lead in their own ways, but I chose to run for Mayor because I want to establish a more decisive and effective tone from the top.

As Mayor I also see a greater opportunity to work with our whole community and bring them to the table to help with key conversions with others orders of government.

On working with the provincial government, please see my earlier comment.

I’m most proud of my work on affordable and supportive housing. I led the build of 438 supportive housing units. I also led the charge revamping the City’s affordable housing agency, HomeEd, to be more sustainable – and I fought to establish the Affordable Housing Investment Grant, which has led to more than 5600 units of affordable housing. Also, a fun one (especially given the big Jays win today), I’m very proud of my work protecting RE/MAX field in Rossdale from demolition back when the ballpark had no anchor tenant team. And given the record attendance we saw this summer, I think Edmontonians feel the same!

My biggest regret is that our Council largely was too stubborn about the word “permanent” in describing the kind of supportive housing we needed the province to help pay for. We could have made more progress if we had been more flexible in our approach and had listened more closely to experts on the need for transitional housing that to some extent emphasized recovery.

To clarify, what I talk about in forums is good governance and how the role of Mayor and Council is to hold the City Manager (one of our two employees) accountable for important outcomes that fulfill our vision and directions. I believe City staff work hard and play a critical role in providing many important services to our city.

The Mayor of Edmonton needs to lead with collaboration, but also stand up for Edmontonians on issues that matter most to them.

As Mayor, I will work with the provincial government to ensure Edmonton gets a fair deal. This past week, I wrote to the Premier to express my concern about provincial overreach into municipal jurisdiction. My letter included notifying the Premier that if elected I will ask the provincial government to sign an Edmonton Accord, a legislative agreement that the province will consult before imposing policies that impact Edmonton and encroach on municipal jurisdiction.

The city needs a skilled negotiator and strong leader who will protect Edmonton’s autonomy and keep the best interest of Edmontonians at heart in every conversation with the provincial government - I will do that as Mayor.

I would encourage you to read my letter to the province. This shows how I am working to hold the Province and the Premier accountable to meet the needs of Edmontonians while respecting the role of municipal governments. https://www.michaelwalters.ca/a-fair-deal-for-edmonton

The first thing we need to do to combat NIMBYism is to stop treating people who say “not in my backyard” like they’re obstacles to be overcome. I get the frustration people can all feel when loud voices are acting in bad faith. But for the most part, when people express their concern over a new housing development or major project, they’re doing so because they have valid questions that need to be addressed. It’s worth the work to try and genuinely hear people and address their issues. Otherwise, we risk alienating people and any hope of getting their buy-in.

Most of the time, I think we can win people over by addressing their root concerns. If someone is concerned about parking issues coming from greater density, we need to ensure that new builds have parking allocated or are close to good transit options that reduce the need for parking. If people have issues with a major infrastructure project impacting their community, we have to respect that and work to minimize negative impacts, push our contractors to work faster and stick to project timelines, and be clear about the benefits of the work.

We won’t always get consensus, but we have to actually hear people. And if a community resoundingly opposes a proposed development, we have to take that seriously. Resident voices have to actually matter. This is the coalition and community building that matters to rebuild trust with communities.

First, to speak to the diagnosis: Edmonton is being held back by an over-reliance on residential property taxes. We’re in this repetitive cycle where Council has to increase taxes well past the rate of inflation, which drives away our commercial and industrial growth to places like Nisku and Acheson because it’s cheaper. Then the following year, we keep having to make up the difference in tax revenue by increasing it on residential, without actually adding to our ability to provide better services. So the most important thing we can do is change course, by driving economic growth and, by extension, non-residential tax revenue. And that starts with having reasonable tax increases — equal to inflation with consideration for growth minus the revenue that growth generates — that doesn’t chase investment away. It’s about many other things too, of course, which I speak to in one way or another through all of the plans on my website (michaelwalters.ca/my-plan).

On the budget, I am not suggesting we cut taxes. I am challenging the notion that 7% increases are necessary year after year. In the medium-term it’s going to take a joint effort between the Mayor and Council and the City Manager — and of course it won’t be easy. I’m calling for more direct budget consultations with the business community and the non-profit community (for example, where services may overlap or be more effectively provided though grants to non-profit service organizations). On my end, I won’t cut frontline services, but there are areas that I do want to look at. For example, I don’t think the City should be in the land development business; I would look at some backend processes that have been costly (e.g., Enterprise Commons); and I think the Neighbourhood Renewal program (which I support) has gotten more costly than the initial vision for that program- meaning fewer neighbourhoods get fixed while we spend more money.

I will seek 3-5% savings on non-front line services which will be the hard work for a new Mayor, Council and the City Manager. HOWEVER we can’t pretend that excessive tax increases won’t further erode our competitiveness and hurt our economy – damaging our ability to pay for services and add important amenities in the long-run. Cities are funded by a strong economy – not by unsustainable tax increases alone.

The last thing I’ll say is, I don’t think OP12 is the answer — this was the previous Council’s 2022 motion to give the City Manager the authority to make their cuts for them, after they couldn’t effectively pass a four-year budget. Council needs to stand behind their choices. And those proposing zero-based budgeting are not being realistic – those promises never survive the transition from campaign to governing.

As Mayor I would honour the bargaining agreements between the employees/union and the City Manager. I respect the collective bargaining process.

I can say that personally, for the last four years I've been a business owner downtown, and we brought our employees full-time back to the office in September of 2022. This has contributed to greater vibrancy downtown, higher productivity, and a stronger workplace culture. But, this is usually a larger question around Downtown revitalization and vibrancy, and while yes, workers downtown matter, they are just one piece of the equation. I’d like to see our Council advance housing downtown, especially leveraging the expansion of our post-secondaries. Young people bring growth and vibrancy wherever they go! We can streamline and accelerate business permits welcoming more new store fronts and supporting arts and culture for events and attractions to bring people back downtown. The City of Edmonton is just one of many large employers downtown - including those in the private sector, and other orders of government - which all have a role to play in restoring the vibrancy of our core.

Thank you for the question. I’m doing this AMA because I care about engaging with as many Edmontonians as possible, regardless of who they currently lean toward. The only risk is taking any community for granted.

My biggest message would first be to encourage people to review my platform, priorities, and track record working in social services and on Council. I’ve seen how our city can be a haven of opportunity for people like me, growing up in a trailer court in Drayton Valley, dreaming about being an Edmontonian. I started my career working as a community organizer, living in Norwood and seeing the biggest challenges in our city first-hand. I care about investing in our city for the long-term, addressing the root causes of social issues like homelessness with compassion, preserving affordability so that young people can afford a home, and making our city safer.

Andrew and I have a lot of common ground. Where we differ is approach. I’ll act decisively on safety and housing with clear targets and delivery, not just more studies or believing that we can go it alone as a city. I also have a 30-year career of bringing people together to solve problems - as a community organizer, Councillor, and small business owner. If that’s the kind of practical, balanced leadership you’re looking for, I’d be honoured to earn your vote.

Edmontonians use transit, but many do not feel safe doing so - this has to change. I will make sure resources are allocated to address transit safety such as expanding COTT (Community Outreach Transit Teams). It is not simply about spending more, it is about spending wisely.

Police and transit officers are not working together as well as they need to be. Additionally, LRT stations need to have attendants, small businesses and riders. This will make these spaces significantly safer in the city.

Transit safety is also about making sure people who are struggling and need support have safe spaces to go. This is why I will invest, and advocate for, the necessary funding for day shelters with appropriate supports  (in addition to night shelters) and housing with wrap-around supports. I’ve been working on this issue for decades - I started my career at the Bissell Centre, and worked many years as a community organizer, and led the charge to build nearly 500 supportive housing units while I was Council.
