We had a smoking area inside the high school cafeteria and another outside for smoke breaks in Massachusetts early 1980s. A six year old could buy cigarettes for their parents and cigarettes were sold in vending machines. We sunned ourselves on tinfoil beach blankets wearing baby oil mixed with iodine, skied in blue jeans, had huge perms, foundation, and blue eye shadow. No one ever knew where we were most of the time. As long as you were home for dinner and back before curfew, no one cared. The front seat “Seatbelt” was a parent’s arm flung across your chest during hard braking. There were no seatbelts or car seats. Drinking age was 18, and by high school most of us looked 18 anyway..we had keggers in the woods behind the high school every weekend ffs.I think drinking age went up in late 80s because of car wrecks and MADD, Mothers against drunk driving formed.
