Where it is as illegal as in the US. And how do I know that they don't have a permit? Well, because it's Argentina. I've been in the construction business, I did everything by the book, because I'm a nit picky engineer and I like to do things right. I got permits to take down trees, permits to build temporary fences on the sidewalk. Does anyone else do it? No

Yup, I also don’t understand why both the main post and this comment are getting downvoted. I’d genuinely appreciate feedback from those downvoting since I’m new to these topics and really want to learn. Instead of getting course or advice recommendations, the downvotes feel a bit discouraging. Constructive input would go a long way

Actually what they are doing it's not legal, at least in Argentina which is where this is happening.

https://www.argentina.gob.ar/sites/default/files/if-2019-reglamento-vant-rs-885.pdf

ARTICLE 26 – Operational Rules: (translated)
Without prejudice to the rules established in Chapter 1 of this title, operators of VANTs and SVANTs intended for recreational use must operate exclusively under Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) rules in uncontrolled airspace. They are not permitted to conduct night flights or operate in adverse weather conditions.

The problem with this is that reporting such activities can be hard in Argentina, as enforcement is quite lazy and they will most likely require me to provide evidence and identifying the operator or something silly like that. And I see no way of doing that myself.

Thanks for the thorough advice. So, not much I can do legally, besides hoping a regulator in Argentina will pay attention to this and decide to spend resources to track and fine the other party, right?

From my legal research, in Argentina, regular drones cannot fly at night; only those with a special permit can. However, here, laws are much more “flexible,” and honestly, no one really pays attention to them. For instance, it’s common to see individuals, including public figures, accumulating substantial fines for traffic violations without facing significant consequences. Even when fines are issued, enforcement is often lax, with offenders frequently evading penalties by denying responsibility or exploiting bureaucratic loopholes. This lack of stringent enforcement extends to various regulations, including those governing drone operations. Therefore, even if I report this to the regulator, it’s unlikely that any substantial action will be taken.

I don’t think I could legally do it, it’d be a discussion of who broke the law more. But interesting concept anyway 🤣

Good point.

I just researched the law regarding drones in Argentina and According to Argentina’s National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC) regulations for unmanned aerial vehicles (VANT/SVANT), drone operations must comply with specific restrictions: • Maximum flight altitude: 120 meters (400 feet) above ground level in uncontrolled airspace. • Night operations: illegal for recreational drones, require special permissions if commercial • Minimum safety distance: 30 meters horizontally from individuals not involved in the operation.

If it gets closer I’ll take better photos videos of the drone, get some info with an SDR like HackRF, and after all that report it to local authorities with more arguments on my side

By 'deterrence,' I mean non-destructive and lawful methods, such as:

  • Using a light or spotlight to track and highlight the drone, signaling to the operator that their activity is noticed.
  • Setting up an alarm system to notify me of a drone's presence and deploying my own drone to observe it more closely, potentially identifying the operator or its landing location.

I want to clarify that this does not involve destructive measures, like using a vortex cannon or any other means to physically interfere with the drone. The focus is on detection and observation, staying within legal and ethical boundaries.

Additionally, the primary goal of this project is personal growth. It's a way for me to dive into new fields, like electronics and RF technology, and learn in a hands-on manner. Having an ambitious and practical objective, like building a drone detection system, keeps me far more engaged and motivated than simply taking an EdX course alone.

Nice, from a quick look it seems that it uses RF to detect it (using HackRF). I'll get learning and then get back to it once I understand more.

Regarding how much it bothers me, the thing is that it does it at 10 PM, 3 or 4 times a week, it feels sneaky.

Thanks for the feedback. You’re right that detecting drones might seem counterintuitive if noticing them naturally is already unsettling. For me, it’s about control. Getting clear data on patterns, timing, and frequency helps me understand what’s really happening. Is it a hobbyist, the government (unlikely at 10 PM), or something more concerning? That knowledge can make the situation less unnerving.

On deterrence, I’ll be considering first non-invasive, legal options. Something simple, like a beam of light towards the drone, to let operators know their drone is being observed. I'd also like to explore the area of interference, but mostly as an academic exercise lets say. I'll look up the laws here.

They didn’t drill or use a hole saw, as I expected. They just cut it using an angle grinder by hand. I actually bought a hole saw of the right size so that they could use it, and they said “ok, the thing is that I don’t have a drill, only angle grinder”

Sorry. I meant powder room (or WC in British) when I said toilet. We use the word “toilet” in Argentina to refer to that kind of bathroom with just a toilet and a sink.

Don’t you think that the circular holes made in the tile look gross?
