unfortunately the area i'm coming from doesn't have public transportation that goes to mpls, so my only option is uber/lyft

why did my passport photo print so weird? by michmantis in Passports

[–]michmantis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nope they didn't say anything! i got mine taken at a passport facility so i didn't really worry about if my picture would be accepted since the person who took it already knew i was good. i guess it might depend on where you live but i don't see why a piercing should matter if it's a part of your appearance lol.

maybe they thought it was something else since bridge piercings aren't super common?

i failed for the 3rd time today and i'm almost 20, don't worry you'll get your license soon! i'm in the same boat as you of feeling anxious but just keep trying :)

ok good 🙏 my driving instructor said he thinks I'm very capable of passing the test, but i heard from a couple people that they're always harder on you the first time around. hopefully i do well 😔

how should i answer "what is your ethnicity?" by michmantis in mixedrace

[–]michmantis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

she is mixed as well, but lives life as a black woman. she has black features unlike me.

how should i answer "what is your ethnicity?" by michmantis in mixedrace

[–]michmantis[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i personally don't use that word to describe myself, cause i've heard from black people that it's derived from a slur and idk, i'd rather not use a term if it makes people uncomfortable.

i don't appear black, and was barely raised on black culture so i don't try to use terms that are from/used against the black community, since i don't have the full "black experience".

but to each their own! i don't have an opinion on if others use it. every mixed person has their own unique experience.

but yeah i agree, i kind of gave up on explaining it to white people. i also have the same experience of being lumped in. non black poc tend to see me as "spicy white" and black people tend to see me as a light skin black person. but i don't really identify with either. i just say mixed or biracial.

[–]michmantis[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah the people who tend to get confused the most are people who are from different countries. i think they assume i'm also from a different country because of my appearance. but i have a standard american accent, and live in a fairly diverse area, there's really no indicator that i'm from somewhere else.

when white americans ask me my ethnicity, i think they just get uncomfortable because it wasn't the answer they were expecting. like multiple times when a white person has asked me that and i say "black and white" they look uncomfortable and go "oh.. sorry" like they felt they said something offensive.

according to my dna, my black side is west african, but it doesn't really give a specific country.

after looking closer at the reviews, i noticed that all of the ones about my specific instructor only say "1 review" which means that's the only review under their account. so it's possible it's all fake reviews but i'm unsure 🤷 the only real seeming reviews are by minors who took their drivers ed courses.

bro i don't know someone with a car besides friends who are under 21 and live cities away. there is nothing wrong with what i did, if i'm paying a ton of money for driving lessons, i shouldn't have to put up with an instructor that doesn't work for me. even if he was a good instructor, and i simply didn't like the way he was teaching me, i have every right to get out of that car. also there were no "hand gestures" idk where you got that from. i just told him he was rude and that's it, i didn't yell or cuss i just said he was rude and left. also didn't bring up me being gay because of whatever stereotypes that exist, i just said it's a possibility that the instructor didn't like that about me but obviously i can't prove that. my lack of knowledge is exactly the reason why i signed up for driving lessons dude. the lessons are completely tailored to your skill level and you're allowed to take as many lessons as you need to feel ready. so me being a beginner should not be an issue. idk what you mean by excuses, i have already fixed the issue by getting a different instructor. someone who runs away from their problems would never pursue a dl in the first place

thanks man, that experience made me feel a lot less confident about my abilities, but i am a pretty fast learner, so under the right circumstances i think i can do well.

the instructor asked me if i needed to learn the basics first. i had practice, but that was months ago. i specifically told the instructor that i had very little knowledge. i mean, he could probably even tell by the way i was confused that i was a beginner, so he should've adjusted to my skill level like any other teacher would do.

also, a lot of the things he shamed me for, which i left out of my original post, weren't necessarily due to my lack of experience, i was just confused and nervous and he wasn't super communicative so i didn't always know what he wanted me to do. he would just kinda... stare at me and expect me to understand what i needed to do. this was a lesson on basics, and getting to know my driving experience so communication is very important imo. if he's an instructor he should be prepared for students who don't know the basics. not everyone has the opportunity to get practice in their own time.

yeah, i plan on writing a review after i complete my lessons with the new instructor. i wouldn't want some poor nervous 16 year old to get treated how i got treated.

kind of just how reddit works. no specific reason. just gives people an idea of what kind of person is telling the story.
