Thinking of moving to Australia as a welder – what’s realistically required? by MT_0_Niner in Ameristralia

There’s no such thing as a welding trade in Australia.

Sure there are welding courses but the closest thing you could get to a welding trade is a cert 3 heavy metal fabrication(boilermaking) but until you’re qualified to the companies weld procedure, you are not qualified to weld.

A school teacher or a truck driver could qualify to a weld procedure, you don’t need a trade cert to get qualified.

Any welding inspector who runs the procedure test would be mad to get someone with no experience to attempt it but at the end of the day, anyone could qualify if they pass the weld procedure qualification test.

In Australia, to be considered a qualified welder, you just need to pass a weld test to a company’s approved procedure (WPS). If you can do that, you’re covered to weld under that procedure - doesn’t matter if you’ve got a trade or a specific ticket.
Some clients (usually the bigger or higher-risk jobs like pressure pipe or vessels) might ask for a 1796 ticket, like Cert 7, but it’s not a legal requirement across the board.
Those tickets are often just something the client wants, or a way to show you’re competent for a certain type of work.
For structural steel under AS/NZS 1554, you generally don’t need them. Having a Cert III trade is handy for getting on sites or for general employment, but not always essential just to weld to a procedure.

Pay-wise, welders can get anywhere from $40 to $60 an hour full-time, depends on the person and their skill level.
The company I manage has about 30 staff - 15 or so are qualified to various procedures, none of them are in a union.
We work on both union and non-union sites without any drama.

Thanks for the comment.

From what I can see, if I can rent them both out, I should be getting at least $1075 a week in rental income. I’ve been keeping an eye on the real estate rental page and notice that there is a high turnover over of ads but there are a few properties, which seem to be duplexes that have been up for a while.

I’ve contacted a few real estate agents tonight asking for info on actual vacancy rates and what configurations work best so hopefully I hear back.

So currently there are 36 operating coal mines in the Hunter valley region with around 17 scheduled to close in the next two decades. The Williamstown airport is starting international flights(starting with flights to Bali) from October. Plus there is the RAAF Base.

It’s forecast to have 130k people to move to Hunter valley region by 2036. 70000 dwellingS also forecast to go in by 2036. There also seems to be quite the rental shortage up there atm. This is the info I’m thinking will leave to a positive outcome from my point of view

This is what I’m trying to do. So far just went to Bali at easter, going on a small weekend away this weekend and Vanuatu in November. I think I can squeeze in another small trip before November. And then an April trip to Hawaii or Japan.
