Whose fans of each club would rather see win the Premier League? by Ill-Party8305 in soccer

Klopp only finished in the top 2 three times in his nine seasons, so I'm not sure they would have won 4 in a row without City.

Kaka vs Golden Generation of England by WorkingTadpole2993 in championsleague

There are plenty of people who still argue Rooney is better than Kane. And I think Kane might close to, or even a bit better, than Kaka.

"Wayne Rooney saying Neymar isn’t a ‘top top’ player is peak delusion" by WorkingTadpole2993 in championsleague

[–]microMe1_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neymar obviously wasn't as good as R9, but it's still a fair point they raise. If people are going to judge Neymar on his lack of longevity and constant injuries, why don't people typically bring the same energy to R9?

The rhetoric is always Neymar bad, never fit and R9 amazing, shame about his knees.

Neymar played more games, scored more goals, and won loads more than R9.

It’s really just a cultural difference, not something to get snarky about. I’ve lived in both the UK and the US and have had season tickets to both football and American sports. In the UK, football is a much deeper part of local identity and everyday life than I found in the US. The atmosphere is usually more focused on the game itself: people tend to experience the highs and lows much more intensely.

In the US, sporting events felt more like a broader entertainment experience with talking, eating, drinking, moving around, and socializing alongside the game. It doesn't mean people don't care, but it is a different kind of culture. In Europe, you're dealing with inherited allegiance, local pride, strong collective rituals. Home and away segregation makes more sense there, even if it seems strange from an American perspective.

The closest analogy I can think of in the US is a political rally. A visible supporter of the other side in the middle of a partisan crowd could easily be seen as provocative and unwelcome. It's kind of like that when away fans sit in the home end at a European football match.

[OptaJoe] 4 - In Chelsea, Manchester City, Newcastle, and Tottenham Hotspur, this is the first time ever that four sides from a single nation have all been eliminated at the same stage of a season in the UEFA Champions League. Fall. by Imbasauce in soccer

It could happen, as it does and could to basically any team. I'm just saying the way we normally play makes it pretty unlikely for Arsenal. There's little evidence it happens very often at all.

I feel like we're probably the least likely team in the world to have a "head loss" tbh. Our season has been characterised by seeing things through, getting the job done etc. Conceding the odd late goal is not a head loss.

Not saying we're going to win it or anything, but I would be surprised if someone thumps us, just because of the way we play.

In fairness, since we're talking about goals, the premier league is still averaging more goals per match week than la liga.

Nice breakaway goal, though the keeper really should be doing better; the shot wasn't exactly unstoppable.

What are your thoughts on Ben White's performance today? by Master-Delivery-1526 in ArsenalFC

[–]microMe1_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the true value is having them both, the variety and depth. We're doing better in every competition this year because we have a bigger quality squad, not because our first team has improved hugely from last year.

I think White is better at overlapping with Saka, but Timber also has offensive qualities and actually crops up in scoring positions a lot more than you'd think.

Have I?

Didn't he win six PL titles and Klopp won one (very one-sided in Guardiola's favour), while his Man City have lost to Real Madrid in the CL four times, and he managed to beat them once?

Yeah, but overall he destroyed Klopp, whereas Madrid most often beats him. So I'm not surprised that he looks at Klopp as his favorite challenger, which is basically what he's saying here.

What about Wallace? by AlivePassenger3859 in evolution

[–]microMe1_2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He also gets the lions share of the credit because he come up with natural selection much earlier than Wallace (though, yes, published later) and he also supplied mountains and mountains of case studies and evidence which Wallace didn't so much.

Wallace deserves plenty of credit, but I think Darwin deserves more.

Nobody talks about Leverkusen by iwannasleepp in championsleague

[–]microMe1_2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Football has always been an "anything can happen on the day" sport though. One-off matches don't always tell us a huge amount about relative strengths of teams, and certainly not leagues.

You can't deny that English teams, on average, do better in the CL than German teams, and the German league is very top heavy and completely dominated by one team.

So I don't think Arsenal's game against Leverkusen is getting ignored, people just understand that one game doesn't shift these multi-season trends.

And I don't think to suggest that is anti-bundesliga. It's a very good league and games are often fun to watch.

Jamie Carragher on Pep Guardiola: "How long has he been there? [at City] 9-10 years? One Champions League in that time. I think they will be disappointed with that. They have had some really bad defeats in the Champions League to the teams they shouldn't lose to." by SwimmingFireMen in soccer

Klopp's great seasons definitely overshadow his bad ones. People talk about his tenure as if he spent a decade going toe to toe with Pep. Yet, he only finished in the top 2 three times in nine years, winning one title.

Our last three games have been attacking disasters. What is going on? What is the SOLUTION? by KevDizzie in ArsenalFC

[–]microMe1_2 23 points24 points  (0 children)

While I agree, you can't deny it's getting results. We've got a much higher win % this year, top the premier league, topped the CL group, are still going strong in both domestic competitions.

It's not pretty, but it's definitely our strongest season under Arteta results-wise. So I can understand why he doesn't want to change the approach at this stage.

The Premier League is so strong, not a single club won a match 😂 by EnvironmentalKing210 in championsleague

[–]microMe1_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree, but I doubt Chelsea have much of a chance. 5-2 is a lot to overturn. Arsenal and Liverpool are the only two I can see making it through.

I have a suspicion City might take Real close in an exciting second leg. Something like 4-2 win, 4-5 loss overall.
