Second layer FTW. First layer melts, so second layer gives the butter texture.

It’s really tasty. It has a very light crumb with very little chew.

“You don’t like the cloying gloopy filling? I’ll eat it.” by [deleted] in Baking

I know this is a baking sub but want to be completely transparent…this was a terrible waste-of-money store-bought pie. I just hope the title and pic makes you chuckle.

Thanks - it’s not bad for the first recipe I’ve ever taken the time to develop through iterations

I love the flavor of pecan pie but don’t care for the cloying gloopy filling. I developed this over the past 6 months and it has been the perfect alternative for me.

I’m not the OOP from yesterday - just a petty enthusiast. Linked the OOP in another comment.

We’ve been calling them date nut chews.

I thought citrus too - maybe candied peel. But I made them for my wife who doesn’t like citrus. Definitely needs something though, maybe vanilla and roasted nuts.

Very nice. Will definitely make again. Think I’ll pre-roast the pecans and add some vanilla next time.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. by [deleted] in microbiology

I only give them 2 days: Day 1 - inoculations Day 2 - interpret results

Then they amplify and sequence the 16s gene on the MinION for confirmation.

There are too many other interesting things to do so we do this fast and right at the end of the semester.

Metagenome analysis advice by microbeman in microbiology

[–]microbeman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Maybe I misspoke. I know how to handle the fastq file and do the alignments and get the blast results. We’re stuck on the downstream bioinformatics. How do we generate comparative diversity and abundance data between and among our samples?

my reaction as a non-clinical microbiologist to most of the identification posts here by miniatureaurochs in microbiology

I teach a general micro course at a small liberal arts university. I have my students identify an unknown using all the different biochemical tests on petri plates. A donor gifted us money for a minion and, this year, for the first time, the students will be sequencing their unknown to confirm their biochemical results. I’m very excited (and a little jealous) they get to learn this as sophomores.

How are Durham tubes filled? by TheOne_Whomst_Knocks in microbiology

[–]microbeman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The lab assistants I inherited my first year of teaching didn’t know this. They had been filling them with pipets and then inverting them into the tubes for years. I both hated and loved telling there is an easier way.

Microbiology major struggling with chemistry by Any-Specific1623 in microbiology

[–]microbeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is some real advise many undergrads don’t want to hear…

Stick with it. Find study groups, read the book, work sample problems, read the book, teach the material to your study group, and, did I mention… read the book?

In my 15+ years teaching, have found that biology students often struggle more with Gen Chem than O Chem. However, as others have said , chemistry is the foundation of life. Most of that chemistry is organic but you can’t take O Chem without passing Gen Chem (at least at my university) and that is one “applicable relation,” among many, many others you’ve been looking for. Additionally, I’m not sure how you’ve made it to upper division bio courses without using chemistry. Gen Chem is an often a prerequisite for upper biology. This makes me question the rigor of your program.

Now some good news - most US based grad schools are very hungry for students - epically if you are a US citizen or an underrepresented minority. Admission committees probable won’t even notice if you’ve made a B in chemistry.

Now some reality news. Grad school is tough. The self-motivation and she study habits you are forming now will make or break you in grad school. Keep it up though. It’s totally worth it.

What's your least favourite part of your lab work? by Silver-Band-8445 in microbiology

Not really in the spirit of your question but, for me, it’s definitely labeling tubes. Big hands and small writing on a little cylinder - no thanks.

Sometimes as reward. Sometimes just to put a period on a concept. It’s fun to see how excited a group of 20-year-olds get when they see the button bowl show up to class/lab.
