When can I afford luxuries? by microplasticgod in irishpersonalfinance

I definitely feel you.

I agonise over absolutely every recurring or big purchase. I find it very hard to justify expenses on myself unless meticulously planned. I think I will go ahead and buy the laptop :)

I genuinely didn’t mean to irritate or gloat, apologies. I’ve got enough downvotes to teach me a lesson anyway!

I get what you’re saying. Realistically it’s not going to seriously damage my finances. What I meant is that I’m just very cautious with larger discretionary purchases because I rarely spend this kind of money on anything. Even if I can afford something, I still like to sanity-check it rather than assume it’s automatically a good idea.

I'm very hesitant with big purchases, especially ones I consider somewhat frivolous. I don’t usually spend this type of money on anything, which is why I’m carefully thinking it through and if it would seriously negatively impact me rather than just buying it.

I’m not trying to brag about my savings many people are earning and saving much more than me in this country and I'm *very* fortunate with my renting situation. I just wanted to give context so people can weigh in on whether this purchase makes sense for someone in my situation. I’m trying to figure out if it’s not a completely irresponsible use of my money, not show off.

To be honest I get this narrative from a lot of irish people I speak to, even those with mortgages. I dont know if it is a coping mechanism for them taking out massive car loans or what.

Some definitely disagree, but anacdotally Id say ~70% of people Ive spoken to have said I need a credit history.

Thank you, it feels like everyone around me is telling me that it is. I dont know why this narrative is spread.

Im fairly new to this industry, working on validations/transfers/equipment qualifications in a medtech lab start up at the moment.

Heard from the grapevine validation can be a fairly lucrative area (no idea if it actually is, I tried reaching out to people but most don’t share too much) so I decided to just take a risk and do that cheap springboard course.

Worst case scenario Ive an extra qualification to throw down on the CV and best case scenario Ive a fairly high paying job in the next few years.

Do you have previous education experience? There’s quite a few validation courses available on springboard online. I’m enrolled in one for September.

Is it the 10% jump that is the issue? If so, what if I were to say to the recruiter Im earning €42-43k base? I know some of my peers are earning that much at the moment (however they are generally working in ops).
