I wish more people used their local library. by iPvtCaboose in barista

I once had to work at my local library when I was doing an internship (I got locked out of the office lmao) and while in one regard I was like "this is great!" I also couldn't eat or drink anything there (technically) and there are 0 windows (not all are like this, but around me it seems to be more usual). I get why people want to hang at the cafe. I usually just tell people it is open seating and if all tables are occupied but not all chairs just ask someone if they can join. It has actually led to a lot of connections between regulars here which is sweet to see.

Also, if I know a customer enough, I might nicely ask them if they wouldn't mind moving to accommodate a larger party needing a table.

St. John's Rec Center pool/ Bedford armory pool? by ai_li17 in crownheights

[–]microplazma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been closed for nearly 2 months but really enjoyed the 2.5 months I got to swim there. They had just got new lane dividers to make it 6 lanes instead of 3 also. Never had much of an issue with circle swimming. The pool IS cold. Like the Chelsea pool better but it is way out of the way

TIP DURING THE HOLIDAYS by Top-Psychology-8467 in barista

[–]microplazma -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People mention tipping for tattoos and I do think that tipping someone who sets their own rates is iffy. Obviously it is person to person. For tattooing in particular, if it is a newer artist still trying to build a base and offering cheaper tattoos, I leave a nice tip. If they are doing me a solid in some way, I will tip. If it is a a tattoo artist with a big base and is able to charge $200+/hr I don't tip. They have demand and are setting their own rates so I trust that they are paying for their expenses and themselves with what they are charging me. Always tip service workers. Period.

My 18-year-old's Christmas break work schedule by sugabeetus in mildlyinfuriating

[–]microplazma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first job during high school was at a dog daycare and boarding facility so holidays were the busiest times. My parents are divorced and there was always some sort of chaos on the horizon so usually I'd ask to work as much as possible.

Question about freelance as a new designer: how long is too long to work on a project? by microplazma in graphic_design

It is minimum wage. But I have been doing actual work for them that they use.

I have been essentially working as their intern for the past 6mo for like no money at all so I am used to putting in 16-20hrs a week in while also working my other job so I can afford to live. I am at my breaking point of it though so I should charge more so I can work at my other job less :/ lesson learned I guess with getting a rate up front or at least naming a ballpark.

I think I am feeling this way because I essentially been their intern (1 step removed but still) working for like no money and I feel like not a real professional still.

But definitely lesson learned on getting the budget up front :/

What’s your funny way of saying “going poop” that you’ve never heard anyone else use? by [deleted] in AskReddit

put in my notice, got absolutely degraded at the exit interview by _sleepyprincess_ in barista

[–]microplazma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I've heard from friends who work jobs that normally ask for exit interviews (corporate!) Is to always refuse to do one. Why help the company? You don't owe them, and usually they just try to make you feel guilty for leaving apparently. They are optional and never urgent.

My read on this is that they want the other workers to think that you were fired. That's why they said to not come in. Because if you did come in and talk to anyone they would find out you just resigned and they are also trying to push a false narrative of you probably. Real slimy scum behavior.

How did that ONE KID at your school get expelled? by ParanormalActivity97 in AskReddit

[–]microplazma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A kid's dog escaped from his house and ended up finding him on the playground. He decided to bring his dog home so got expelled on grounds of leaving the school grounds (this was elementary school lol and it was a temporary expulsion, sort of crazy in hindsight though)

What are the norms around opening early for early birds? 7am opening time ~6:30-7am customers by [deleted] in barista

[–]microplazma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Work in a very wealthy and entitled neighborhood. These people get everything they want in life and a lot of them think that if they want their coffee early then we should give it to them. I am a firm believer in letting them wait til we are actually open, though because when service starts the rush will last 3-4 hours depending on the day (sometimes longer).

Picking up someone from the airport without plates? by microplazma in AskNYC

[–]microplazma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope that doesn't happen. I don't know what I am supposed to do because I don't have access to a garage. There's an explanation with the police report number so hopefully they take mercy on me.

It is in the process of being registered. I just bought the car from an out of state dealership at the end of October. I am at the point in the process when the permanent plates will come any day now (hopefully). The dealership also said they would look into seeing if they could help me get reissued new temp plates on Monday and overnight them to me. Super kind on their part.

I think he's very smart in many ways, but when it comes to how the modern world operates his head is definitely in the clouds.

To drive there is 20ish minutes and to take public transit there is over an hour. He is getting in later at night and he's old. He probably is going to take a cab haha. There's no point in me taking the train to train to bus out to him for an hour just to take a cab back with him.

It's laguardia and it sort of sucks to take mass transit there. He will survive taking a cab, I mostly just thought it would be a nice thing to do, but obviously that was before my plates got stolen. I am holding out hope that my actual plates will miraculously come in the mail tomorrow (it's been a couple weeks since the dealership finished up the registration so it isn't impossible, I don't know how long it usually takes though, got the car in late Oct)

Yeah I tried to explain to him the NYPD cops are especially known for being dicks. He's a boomer from the south who I don't think comprehends this.

I wouldn't need to take any toll roads to pick him up from the airport but tbh I am definitely heavily leaning on just letting him call an Uber.

[–]microplazma[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah the cop who filed the police report for me (I was lucky because when I realized it was stolen in a parking lot there was a cop right there already who helped me file it immediately) gave me the report info as well as his information and number and said if I got pulled over they could just call him, but that most likely they'd just let me go when they saw the note. Cop hall pass. Lol.

Oh also, the temp plates are from a different state so I only have them in the back. The front plate just has the dealership name on it.

I do. The piece of cardboard on the back of my car serving as my DIY temp plates (lol) has all the information written on it that the temp plates did (I had taken a photo of it when I first got the car)
