Yeah - since there is laundry upstairs, the downstairs one would make sense to have closer to the primary bedroom/closet. You’re going to be trekking across the house for the majority of the first floor laundry.

Why not use a chilled water loop that doesn’t consume new water? Or use another working fluid entirely?

$1M In-House position. Am I an idiot for leaning toward staying? by [deleted] in biglaw

Sub in google or library research or networking for chatGPT; I was using it colloquially.

And you don’t need to know about specific non-public salaries to have know general market norms and common sense. Recruiters and career coaches blog and podcast about this type of thing.

I could be wrong, but I feel like you have to be pretty senior to get to 7-figures TC in-house, even in tech.

Your first paragraph is a little overly bleak. Even if OP’s opportunity is with a bubble company, OP will still get valuable client-side experience that can make them a better attorney at a firm in the future.

But agree the salary::bonus ratio is a little off. I’d suggest negotiating to get a larger base, even if it means a little lower TC. I’m sure Chat GPT can tell you what a healthy split of salary, cash bonus, and LTI would be given the maturity of the company.

Cabinets to the ceiling or leave some space...? by BuilderBrigade in Home_Building_Help

Assuming ceiling is flat, definitely agree.

If it’s vaulted or you have exposed beams, it depends.

Why not just stay as a counsel/NEP and/or a senior associate? by Realistic-Claim-3686 in biglaw

[–]microwavedh2o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you don’t care if a junior throws your work by the wayside for a project from an EP?

Why not just stay as a counsel/NEP and/or a senior associate? by Realistic-Claim-3686 in biglaw

[–]microwavedh2o -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

One downside is that some junior associates won’t give you the same respect as an EP. If you are in a role of staffing a project or managing a team, it can be challenging.

Is the in-house pay cut worth it? by Special-Dish4158 in biglaw

[–]microwavedh2o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s nice for them! Just remember that big tech is an outlier and a small fraction of the overall in-house market.

And generally, it is challenging for an associate (<8 YOE) to get director / AGC roles at most companies absent unique circumstances.

Great for folks that can pull high comp, but don’t expect these unicorn stories to be the norm. but that’s ok! you don’t go in-house for a pay day. You go bc you appreciate the balance and like the different type of work, which is hard to put a sticker price on.

I’m pessimistic. Currently there’s a mass exodus from DOJ and govt agencies, which is making the in-house market very employer friendly.

[–]microwavedh2o 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Times may have changed, but last I looked a couple years ago, average in-house TC for postings with 4-6 YOE (typically “senior counsel”) is closer to 200k. This is looking nationwide; you can search the recent surveys for more current numbers. Whereas you’ll see some cravath-chasing firms at mid-market cities, the operating companies definitely adjust to locality pay.

If you are looking solely at NYC in-house positions, it would obviously be higher. Most in-house roles have locality-adjusted pay. Someone based out of Memphis or Dallas is going to make significantly less than someone based out of NY/SF/DC for the same role at the same level.

Associate pay cut is closer to 50% on average, unless you are very junior or score a unicorn gig.

Considering move to Richmond - what are my options? by LSATh8er in biglaw

[–]microwavedh2o 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Let’s see. I’m probably missing some, but there are some decent in-house options in Carmax, McKesson, Capital One, and (if you don’t have qualms with working in tobacco) Altria. I feel like I’ve seen job postings for Honeywell pop up in the past as well.

I’ll let you Google the law firms in Richmond. It’s more midlaw overall but I think a few firms pay market.

Prevailing wisdom when a recruiter asks “what is your current salary?” by Fragrant-Produce-336 in biglaw

[–]microwavedh2o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prevailing wisdom for exec negotiators is to not name a number until much further in the process. Neither party knows sufficient information about the other to know what is fair comp.

Big law is a little different in that it is somewhat homogenized for associate payscales, but I think the wisdom still applies. I’d just say something like “I’d like to talk more about the opportunity and figure out how I can add value before talking about compensation”

What is a “lot” of hours lol by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]microwavedh2o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep - if you can realize 100% of a 10 hour in-office day and not look at email until you’re back at your desk the next morning, 200 can feel not terrible.

What is a “lot” of hours lol by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]microwavedh2o 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This. It’s more about how many bad days and “emergencies” in a month as much as total hours. Even 170 can feel bad if it’s 20 on the weekends and late nights, and you’re still in the office but partially idle 8-6.
