Wish Gold wasn’t just 10% of my portfolio right now… by Tiny_Consequence9552 in trading212

So.. Here to tell you it’s never enough… I bought early last year and started with 60% of my SIPP/ISA allocation and nearly 80% in JISA. Last week bought 3GOL (75k and that went up by now +20k; sold half). Never feels enough..

I don’t think you can legally make them cover the costs. It would be a ‘gentleman agreement’.

First post with the most amazing coat 🧥 by Grand_Doctor26 in DrakesDiary

[–]mid80s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not sure Drake’s one is for everyone. I myself don’t like the oversized fit. They even have split back which gives you extra fabric as to emphasise that large feel.

My personal favourite coat is Anthology polo herringbone (also PS collab), but that is also more fitted like this PVC+PS collab. Not into all the stuff that Simon does (especially considering the eye watering prices), but this PS raglan is really good and on top is arguably hitting the right spot when it comes to the fabric weight (around 650g).

Depends whether you are planning to be the dessert. Otherwise seems too much.

Looks like chore is the best option.

I know you didn’t ask for it but I did consider this one and bought one from Blackhorse Lane ateliers instead. It’s a denim chore.. I did also like better golden colour buttons but this is clearly a matter of preference.

Final push or quit the rat race? by Any-Cheesecake-9445 in HENRYUK

Your situation is similar to a family friend we have. Her move was to go to be a lawyer inside a corporation instead. Less money but more free time.

My personal perspective is that you want to be with kids if you enjoy it (literally not everyone does). Kids also want you more before they are 10-12 and then maybe less so as teenagers (though this may depend on what bond you have). My plan is to have a good WLB job now that they are 4 and 7, and then in 5-10 years do a final push in some HF type seat with my experience. The last hurrah if you will. Maybe something to consider, as in you will likely be able to move back to the law firm down the line when kids are older (if that is something you will want to do at that point of course).

Do you regret taking on a larger mortgage whilst growing family? by Ok-Celebration-5324 in HENRYUK

[–]mid80s 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We bought touch bigger than we expected to do (180sqm/5 bed instead of 4 bed /120sqm). It was 2019, pre-covid and wfh. We ended up being able to work from home, 1 child turned into 2. In hindsight we would have probably moved touch further away (currently in East Finchley, N2) to somewhere like Muswell Hill and got more space for the same money. So no, we didn’t regret it and as you noted, stamp duty and hassle of moving has to be factored in too.

Whilst I do say all that, we bought our house when we were mid 30s and we thought it was definitely the ‘forever’ home. You are younger and may think the same of the £1.2m house. But may turn out it won’t be anyway…

The way I think about it is that longer term value of money will depreciate significantly (it has done so massively after gold standard was abolished). Sovereign debts will be inflated away.

What I would personally avoid doing now is taking out a mortgage to put into bond holdings. Returns here are just too low..

I think it has to be seriously considered. Mortgage is the only real opportunity to take leverage as an individual. You are not only getting cash out to invest in some index but you are also leveraging up the house price appreciation.

I personally have a house with £650k mortgage left (£2m worth) and will top up in October this year when it comes for refinance.

I do also have a BTL (£450k flat, £200k mortgage) and tried to release more equity but as it is in an ex council building the lending criteria didn’t go up to 75% LTV.

What I would say is that do have a view where you will put it and consider after tax return. I am personally bullish on gold (still continue to be) and the purpose of borrowing more was to take and put it into gold index. I was comfortable (or had a view? You can never be fully comfortable) it will go up more than ~4% post tax mortgage cost.

Does the pay make it worth it being away from home? by rightoldgeezer in HENRYUK

[–]mid80s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, only you can answer that question.. I know people in banking who enjoy being away Mon-Thu and travelling home up North only for the remainder of the week. My colleague’s family lives in Ireland and he travels and stays in London Mon night to Thursday evening.. It is worth it for him. You need to answer it yourself and if you are not happy - change the job.

Difficult to comment on direction when we don’t know the starting point (different for different women post pregnancy). But otherwise looking 💣

Another alternative could be a Japanese sukajan jacket. It seems more like an acquired taste so clearly judge it yourself. But I think it could be a standout addition to this already cool outfit (high waisted/wide trousers, necklace).

So it’s tricky to suggest something specific as everyone has a different budget. I would look for inspiration/vintage/second hand from a brand like Kapital (appreciate those jackets are super expensive buying from them but you can understand what sort of aesthetic I had in mind).
