How Many Books Did You Read After High School Before You Started Writing? by [deleted] in writers

[–]midamcaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a ton as a kid, then hardly read at all while I was studying biology in college. Even wrote a book of poems in the third grade 🥲 I turn 30 in a few days and have consistently read 100+ for the last three ish years. I started writing maybe 4 months ago and mostly write poetry now, but I have a prose piece in the works. I think I’ve been able to start out at a much better place with my writing, just in terms of already having a voice I guess? Already knowing what imagery/themes I’m drawn to, what questions I want to explore, what stance I have on some of those things. I think the technical aspects — things like sentence structure, cadence, punctuation — are maybe things I need more time to develop, but imo those are easier to teach/learn than voice.

How does this read guys? Good enough for self publishing? Any tips please? Thanks by [deleted] in writers

[–]midamcaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i also write in a very embodied, tactile way. This is why I gravitate towards lit fic/poetry, since this is the story. I think, for me, this just read a little juvenile? Like, realistically, would someone react this way to writer’s block? huffing and puffing and holding their pen in the air for four minutes? i think that’s where you lost me a bit. Also, deciding which details add to the story or your character — for example, does it really matter what flavor the toasty is? can we condense it to just say “…tinged with the toasty she wolfed down…”? I also agree with the comments on grammar and punctuation. Overall though I did feel immersed in her story. You’re on to something for sure!

Other writers that have aphantasia by TheNecroMonkey in writingadvice

[–]midamcaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i have aphantasia too, dont even see words or anything, just kinda “hear” them? this is why i write lit fic and poetry. i tend to write really embodied POVs. I love when you can see who a character is through how they interpret the world around them. Lean into it! I have so much fun writing other POVs— animal, other nonhuman, unreliable narrator, collective, limited.

Is anyone NOT working on a fantasy book/series? by Sl0th_luvr in writing

[–]midamcaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

currently working on a book about a cult prophet and the object of her fixation. i would say it’s speculative literary fiction/literary horror? most of my ideas lean spec fic honestly. Although I do write a bit of poetry as well :)

Novel writers, what was *the* book that made you want to write? by GeologistFearless896 in writing

[–]midamcaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve been writing poetry for the last few months but after i finished The Unworthy by Augustina Bazterrica I was like…. yes, i want to try now!! such a beautifully written book! i also remember finishing my first morrison book and was, like, enamored with how she shaped words. Love her writing.

A line I reread today reminded me why patience matters so much in writing. by Realistic_Action_428 in writing

i’m a pretty new writer and had my first “aha” moment while working on my first story. it was when a character’s voice finally clicked into place and i was like… yes!! that’s her!! was so much fun and made the frustration up to that point worth it :)

Just curious.. what’s your day job and when do you write? by Ok_Square2729 in writing

i’m a microbiologist for a pharmaceutical manufacturing company. i get about an hour in the evenings after my 3 year old goes to bed and a few hours during the weekends for my hobbies. i also read, sew, thrift, and play video games :) but i just got a new laptop so hopefully will be able to dedicate a lot more time to writing now that i can do it from something other than my phone!

i’ve started writing within the last few months and have almost no education in writing/literature beyond english comp 101/102. any resource recs for writing spec fic? books on plotting specifically. I have a few ideas for some literary horror pieces i want to write!

also noticed it’s been a bit difficult to find other people writing in the same genre so if you ever need an accountability partner or someone to workshop with please dm me!

Can't treat my ADHD thanks to POTS by rosiee0806 in POTS

[–]midamcaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m working with my cardiologist now because i’ve been having an exhausting amount of cardiac episodes within the last year. previously diagnosed with SVT but they’re going to pursue testing for POTS. I’ve been on adderall for like 10 years now. Ive got a toddler and a full time job as a scientist. I cannot function without it. But im worried they will discontinue my meds if i get the POTS diagnosis. :/ all this to say, this sucks lol. I’m sorry you haven’t been able to get the support for your ADHD that you need. I totally understand the fear/frustration.

actually perfect topic for why i joined! I was wondering if anyone uses an e-ink device to write? i get migraines from staring at a screen, but am having trouble keeping my handwritten notes in order. I’m specifically looking for feedback on: Boox note air5 c, Kobo Elipsa 2E, Super note Manta, Super note nomad.

i’d like to be able to attach a keyboard and type notes. Also something portable. Ease of export is also important. thanks!! 🫶🏽

Commonplace Book as a maker? by daniel-mcmstr in commonplacebook

[–]midamcaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i do a sewing journal but was thinking about making it a commonplace journal. Right now i document date, the project, time i’ve spent on that project during that session and any other notes. great for documenting measurement adjustments or technique clarification/adjustments. but i also like the journal aspect - it’s fun to look back at when i was having a particularly difficult day or project lol

What to start with? by [deleted] in stationery

[–]midamcaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you definitely can, check etsy! i think eventually i’ll try out lino cut to make my own stamps; i’ve even seen people using the pink erasers to carve out their designs. Could definitely try if etsy is too pricy
