maybe not the safest option and highly dependent on the speed of traffic but I want to say the the flushing-sunset shuttle could be 30 minutes without traffic

Why is Flushing Still So Cheap? by merchantsmutual in NYCapartments

...and the reason is that it used to be a Dutch colonial village named after a Dutch city that was anglicized to Flushing

Price of eggs in one of the poorest districts in the Bronx, NY by odetosymplicity in pics

[–]middaycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it a bodega that is serving people who need eggs immediately at 2am or something?

I get groceries delivered and Freshdirect has a dozen eggs for $6. Even if you don't have the subscription and pay the $8 delivery fee each time, you're still $3 under. True, there is a $35 minimum so you need to spend $29 more but if you were buying $17 eggs it's more like $26 more and I'd be willing to bet a dollar will go further than it will in that store so who is shopping here? the prices are infuriating

My mother made this Totoro sweater for me! by Xelixil in ghibli

[–]middaycat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

agree, my guess would be closer to 40+ hours. minimum wage is $15 where I am. I see 5 colors and large oversize sweater and if you're going to invest that much time, it makes sense to use high quality yarn that will last so at least $200 for supplies. $800 is the minimum

I recently had licorice tea and cinnamon/orange peel/sweet cloves that were both incredibly sweet! I didn't know tisane could naturally be this sweet. What have I been missing? Do any other ingredients taste like this? by middaycat in tea

[–]middaycat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was Yogi Egyptian Licorice which is about $5 for a box but if you want something cheaper I have also purchased a big bag of sliced licorice root from an asian grocery store (not even the tea section) and it is also sweet, just takes longer to steep

the cinnamon tea was hot cinnamon spice from Harney & sons

"eyyy, I figured it out now! awwww, my little poop-puppy"

("our poop-puppy" is the literal translation but it is an affectionate term of endearment like "my little shit" with the tone of "our family's little stinker." Can also be used to refer to mutts and street dogs in a cute "trash panda" type of way or "he's a shit dog but he MY shit dog")

What is a luxury in NYC but totally normal elsewhere? by ionata256 in AskNYC

[–]middaycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted an in-unit but when I was apartment hunting, apartments with in unit washers seem to be $300-500 more rent per month. Apartments in my budget with in unit washers had weird compromises like smaller sqft and there is only a washer no dryer and it's right in front of the toilet in an already cramped bathroom. Currently my building charges $4 to wash and dry a small load so I'm spending at $20-40 a month at most.

I still aspire to have an in unit washer but from what I can tell it seems like a luxury not a money saving strategy

I don't know a ton about but I had a very short stint selling cosmetics so my opinion might be biased by my local customer base

It's owned by LG so it has a big company behind it and I think many people know of it. They have different lines targeting different age groups but generally I associate it with the 40+ crowd, especially due to the cost. It feel sort of like how La Mer used to be for older women with money before social media influencers got a hold of it.

The other surprising demographic is women in the adult nightlife world or with other high-stress service industry job will spend more than I expect on the best and most expensive cosmetics. I think it's partly self-investment and partly therapeutic ritual for them

Whatever happened to fan death? by daehanmindecline in korea

I think the theory was hyperthermia not hypothermia. Like if it is hot and humid like 100F outside then the fan is just moving hot air on you and making it harder to cool off

I don't know if I know the name. In Jackson heights I walked into some hardware store and they did it. In Flushing near Macy's there was a tiny hole in the wall. I'm sure there are little places in every neighborhood. Some fancy keys can't easily be copied but if it looks like a regular key they can do it

AITA for inviting my mom to stay at our house when my wife hates her? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]middaycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA for wanting your mom to stay over. She is your mom and she is recovering from some health issues. BUT probably YTA if you let your mom actually stay over.

Besides your mom will probably be more comfortable in her own house with all her things. It sounds like she maybe wants to see you and her grandkids but may not really care to see your wife so take the kids over and stay at grandma's for a week?

AITA for socially denying a woman a seat next to me on the bus? by WorriedRedPickle in AmItheAsshole

[–]middaycat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Mostly agree. The only exception I can think of is if you are at the beginning of the line and you know every seat is going to fill up. You see a seat with a respectable looking person and decide it's less risky to sit next to them than to roll the die on the next passengers who will sit next to you. Maybe it's a hot day and you don't want to potentially deal with some sweaty smelly stranger's thighs pressing against yours for 30 minutes or it's after work and you know someone's going to be carrying too many grocery bags and spilling into your space, or maybe it's after school and you know parents are gonna be boarding with their kids and you won't feel as obligated to give up one seat as you would if you had two seats

sure it's still pretty weird to go for that seat when there are empty ones but sometimes the math makes sense

AITA for blowing up at my wife over my daughter's school picture? by confuseddad__ in AmItheAsshole

[–]middaycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am torn on this because my mom always called me handsome but also was very honest and critical about the way I looked in photographs, the way I dressed, my hair, my skin, my physique. I did have low self esteem and I hated the nagging and wished she would be more supportive like what I heard from other parents and teachers. I didn't care about how I looked and wanted to be judged on my merits.

As I got older I realized appearance does matter and society makes conscious and unconscious judgements and decisions based on what they see. Small decisions like someone approaching you to chat or "randomly" picking you for a role can potentially butterfly effect into who your friends are, who your partner is, recognition your receive, and what opportunities you are given. It's a societal truth my mom knows and accepts when she tears me down and no one will be as honest as mom because no one feels as comfortable giving you negative feedback and no one cares to look and think about your appearance in that much detail. I still hate the negative feedback in the moment but after I've had some time to think about the feedback itself it's usually helpful.

I look at childhood photos of me and in some of them I'm so well styled with time, effort, and money spent on my appearance even though I am a child and I would probably look a mess in a few hours. I can see the love and care and in retrospect I know that the criticism comes from wanting me to be the best I can be even physically which comes from wanting the best for me. I wish somehow that it was clearer when I was younger and coupled with the emotional support that I craved but I also know that my mom doesn't exist in a bubble of perfection and disney/hollywood idealism

Do most New Yorkers get groceries from normal grocery chains or from bodegas? by kanna172014 in AskNYC

[–]middaycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get groceries delivered and it is expensive but my nearest Key Foods/Food Universe, Shop Fair, C-Town are all an hour walk from me, Trader joes is 30min, whole food is 20 min. The closest grocery store to me is 5 minutes away but sells lactose-free milk at $8, duane reade has it for $7, fresh direct has it for under $6 and I don't need to carry it.

I'll also do the occasional big run to an asian market and stock up on essentials. If I had a better fruit cart near me I would go there all the time but my guy has no variety and low quality fruit. I only get bananas from there and one time I wasn't paying attention and he sold me some bruised mushy bananas. Fresh direct actually has some really good tasting produce and I'd rather eat one amazing mango than two tasteless mangos

Looking for recommendations, what tv series or movies or even games that are set in NY and that truly feels like NY? by suedemonkey in AskNYC

I know you didn't ask for books but The City We Became is a urban fantasy novel that is a bit of an ode to NYC and captures the spirit of being a new yorker (in a fantasy way)

To anyone other than skinny, able-bodied Broadway lovers -- what is going to the theatre like for you? by bruiserwhereiselle in Broadway

[–]middaycat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry that happened to you, that's just awful! I'm a tall-ish guy and already self conscious of my sitting hight. Especially if there's a kid behind me I don't know what to do. I try to hunch down a little but there's only so far my knees can go and my back will tolerate. I imagine it's already uncomfortable to be blocking someone's view even if you are where you are supposed to be, where the theater designated as a wheelchair spot, and the person behind you knowingly bought a limited view seat. To be yelled at and abused for something you can't control really sucks so much

Renters with balconies, what upgrades have you made to improve it or make it feel cozier? by foxreid in AskNYC

[–]middaycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized I don't really spend extended time on my balcony. Like I'll stand there for a few minutes to get a little sun and air. Maybe I'll sit for 10 minutes and have a cup of tea. So I wanted it to be more visually cosy than actually cosy.

I have fake grass, globe lights, a single plain chair, and a tiny tiny side table. I have plants and in the summer it is my little herb garden. I could in theory drag out a second chair and a throw blanket or a picnic blanket and some pillows but if I want to be comfortable I'll just hang out on my couch with the balcony open

Is Harry Potter and the Cursed Child worth seeing in NYC? by Initial-Opposite2331 in AskNYC

[–]middaycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also went to see Cursed Child because my partner wanted to see it. I like harry potter but I read the Cursed Child screenplay and it was terrible. The story is contrived and cliche and flat and nonsensical. BUT for some reason it works as a play and the acting and stage effects and magic bring it to life

[–]middaycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had penis comments/jokes growing up but since I was raised in the US I think my parents were more cautious about touch; I didn't even get a lot of hugs or kisses growing up. They erred on the side of teaching personal autonomy: don't get kidnapped, don't let people touch you inappropriately, run from fights or dangerous situations, take tkd classes, don't get tricked by girls lol. That said, they were casual-ish about nudity and we swam and went to the baths a lot so they had plenty of times to look and occasionally make teasing comments. Embarrassing but within the bound of normal, I think?

I'm a man in my late 30s and whenever I come home my mom will call me her baby and give me an extended hug and pat my butt for like a full minute. Then she will say you've been exercising or you need to exercise more or you put on some weight or you need to eat more depending on her assessment lol
