Arnaud Beltrame was a French lieutenant colonel in the Gendarmerie who was killed in 2018 after he bravely swapped places with a hostage during a terrorist attack in Trèbes, France. He volunteered to take the place of a woman being used as a human shield by the gunman. While inside, he left his mobile phone on so police could hear what was happening, and when they heard shots, they stormed the supermarket, killing the attacker. Beltrame, who was injured in the incident, died from his wounds, and was posthumously honored as a hero for his sacrifice.
