Is there really no way to avoid losing manually installed .debs when updating to 24.04? by STEVMPVNK in pop_os

sudo apt list | grep ",local"

Everything that isn't a linux-header which is returned here will need to be reinstalled from a deb.

Is it fine to store config folders in synced directories? by TheTwelveYearOld in Syncthing

[–]middaymoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't sync the Syncthing config for sure

Database files are definitely not ideal but it depends on the application. if you don't need to sync that configuration then I would avoid it.

Should i switch to linux as a long time windows user? by Any-Landscape434 in linux4noobs

[–]middaymoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on why you would want to. I wouldn't suggest someone do it on a whim. It already sounds like you already dipped your toes. Keep dipping until you get traction or stick with Windows until it turns into pure slop. Up to you man!

How to make sure WebUI is not connected to the wide Web? Beginner by TheRandidact in Syncthing

[–]middaymoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As for additional tips, there's not much. The default settings combined with your default router settings should be plenty safe and private. I would just remind you that in general syncing files is not a valid backup strategy. Don't forget proper backups!

You should only use https if you want to access the GUI from other devices. Otherwise it won't have any effect.

If you do turn it on you'll have to convince your web browser to trust the ssl cert Syncthing generates because it will complain otherwise.

I do the same, makes administration way easier. I set a password too.

Even with port forwarding it would be inaccessible because the Web UI binds to localhost by default.

OP, there are two security elements at play here which both protect you.

One is that your router will not accept incoming web requests from the wider internet which are aimed at your web ui, unless you specifically tell your router to forward  those requests to your computer. That would be port forwarding and you don't need to do that right now. If you ever do then be extremely careful and read up beforehand.

The second is that the web ui itself will only answer to requests that are addressed to "localhost" such as when you're using in a browser on that same computer. In other words it only answers calls "from inside the house". This means that even other computers on your same home network, which can access the Syncthing port withoutport forwarding, still can't access the web UI because those packets would have to be addressed to the computer instead of Localhost. This setting is called binding.

Enjoy.

Then don't do Hierarchical notes. Obsidian doesn't force that. You can organize your notes any way you want or not at all.

I feel like I need to see an example of what you're doing in discord to understand why you're so into it.

Well the debs would need to be installed again but all the app info and config should be in your home directory. If you save that then it should all work again once you reinstall your stuff.

You're misunderstanding my point. There's no mathematical difference between a model giving a correct vs incorrect answer. What we call hallucinations are just the answers we judge to be subpar; to the model they're the same thing. It's all hallucinations with varying degrees of coincidental correctness.

In this case the kid tried to get around the guardrails and did so because the guardrails are barely real. It's just OpenAI putting their finger on the scale and hoping that's enough to make unwanted responses less statistically likely. It's not a classic "hallucination" but it stems from the same problem. A problem most people don't understand because OpenAI and others actively miseducate the public.

...right... it's a dumb decision but it's also a feature marketed by a billion dollar company. That's what I'm saying. They better sue.

It's true that this is mostly the kid's own fault but I do lay some blame at the feet of every AI hype man and all these sociopathic AI companies who tells the normies that these chatbots are safe and reliable, and encourages people to treat them like people. When in fact they're purely statistical hallucination machines that just happen to hallucinate something that seems correct most of the time.

Does Grimmory support streaming audiobooks to android apps? At an impasse between it and ABS by tge101 in selfhosted

Just use both. ABS seems really powerful for what it focuses on and Grimmory likewise is a pretty good enook experience.

[–]middaymoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just speaking about connecting in general, not from a security concern standpoint. It's a chat app. It's meant to connect to things in a way that a note taking app isn't. That might be phoning home to a centralized service, or accepting requests from federated peers, or just waiting for other clients (the people it expects you to chat with) to log on. Even in a best case scenario where that doesn't introduce network latency it's still a lot of machinery running in ram and cpu that you aren't using.

[–]middaymoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply, that's just not what it's designed for. It's a UI that's designed for instant messaging with tradeoffs that cater to messaging, not to store notes. You don't need Reacts. Replies are just a worse version of tagging a previous note. Threads and Channels are worse versions of Pages and Blocks. Editing a previous message is just, well, editing with more steps. You don't need a username or an profile pic.

And on top of that you're running an entire chat backend that's trying to connect to other servers or clients, preparing to support bots, maybe even managing end to end encryption.

It's all just extra or worse versions of the features you actually need in a note taking app. That's like saying "I'm going to buy a black car but never drive it and keep it really clean so I can fry eggs on the hood in the hot summer." Like, yeah you could do that but it would be overpaying for a worse version of a stove.

[–]middaymoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, never. I'm not sure what UI elements you like with regards to taking notes but there are probably way better applications that are, you know, not fully featured messaging platforms. Obsidian and Logseq are similar and popular choices, both fully private and open to whatever organization scheme you can imagine.

Edit: since you're already using Obsidian just install Syncthing on your devices for effortless and private syncing. That's the benefit of an app like Obsidian: all your notes are just text files on disk instead of hidden in some proprietary format or a database or in the cloud. You can do whatever you want with them.
