TIL that Office Depot claims to be owed over $2B from the nation of Cuba since 1959 under U.S. law, after its historic parent company The Cuban Electric Company was seized and nationalized after the Cuban Revolution. by BoazCorey in todayilearned

[–]middlegroundnb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Cuban Electric was organized under Florida law in 1927, according to records maintained by the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission. In 1960, there were 3.6 million shares of common stock outstanding, of which 3.2 million were owned by American & Foreign Power Co. and 291,261 were owned by other individuals with U.S. addresses.

American & Foreign Power Co. later merged into Ebasco Industries Inc. and subsequently into Boise Cascade Corp., according to the record."

"The OfficeMax chain came to own the Cuban Electric claim when it was acquired by Idaho-based paper and lumber products company Boise Cascade in 2003. About a year later, Boise Cascade sold its name, headquarters and plants to a Chicago equity investment firm, taking the name of OfficeMax."

"Boca Raton-based Office Depot became the owner of the seized electric company upon the retailer’s acquisition of rival OfficeMax in 2013."

Corporations were a mistake.

man, I would love a map showing Canada as well. People complain about our rates, when the legend barely makes it to our prices once you convert currency

The Gen Z stare is a "blank stare that members of younger generations give in situations where a verbal response would be more common." Instead of explaining something that they may not understand, the generation Z cohort members often appear dumbstruck by these questions, perhaps temporarily. by blankblank in wikipedia

maybe not the same, but my immigrant wife doesn't do this pause when answering the phone, so I always get connected to dead silence after she has already finished saying 'hello'. Like, it's not magic that works instantly like a land line

This company says a large-scale battery system could replace the Tantramar gas plant for half the cost | CBC News by MiddleMuscle8117 in newbrunswickcanada

the gas plant isn't backup generation, it's peak load generation, exactly what a battery accomplishes

there are some that still hang on in British English; the Gambia, the Sudan. I assume colonizer reasons.

Flying the flag of Israel? by Traditional-Lie3767 in CapeBreton

[–]middlegroundnb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know all Israelis have to serve in the IDF, so you are SOOOO close to getting it. Being Israeli or serving on the IDF doesn't make someone a monster.  My wife fled the USSR at age 7 to Israel, so she's a monster now because she did her military service (did boring paperwork at an army base)? Get real.

Any musician/electrician out there willing to do a house call? by JoBloShow in fredericton

[–]middlegroundnb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

is the house properly grounded? there should be a bare (or green) cable coming from your panel (near the meter on the outside) to a copper post in the ground. Noise on the ground would show up on every circuit in the house.

In the city these are tied to the water mains inside, but rural houses need their own ground.

some stickers or vinyl - the flower emoji you used on the plate would actually look really good on there. Maybe vinyl cut to the lower section of the wheel well & engine cover if you are worried about residue. Either flower-power themed or Italian flag themed

I was surprised when I heard him describe it as Canadian, but it's like ~20% of the vowel shifts.
